Floyd Phillips Gibbons: A biographical and bibliographical studyUnknown Date (has links)
"This writer, having been acquainted with Mrs. Zelda Gibbons Mayer, sister of Floyd Gibbons, talked with her to determine what information on the famous journalist might be extant among the family records. The inquiry revealed that not only was Mrs. Mayer willing to make available an appreciable amount of unpublished material, but that Mrs. Mayer's younger brother, Mr. Edward Gibbons, also was prepared to provide considerable information for such a project. At Mrs. Mayer's suggestion, this writer also solicited the assistance of the writer James Warner Bellah, whose subsequent letter has contributed substantially to the available information. The problem, then, was to determine a convenient and concise form for presenting the details of Gibbons' life and writings in such a way that the information would be readily accessible. After a study of various types of reference works, the writer elected to use the form of a bio-bibliography in preparing this professional paper in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's degree in Library Science. The first of three parts is a brief biography of Floyd Gibbons, in which the main events of his life are described and discussed with respect to their effect upon what Gibbons wrote. The second is a report and summary of the reactions of the reading public at large and of various reactions of the reading public at large and of various critical reviewers to Floyd Gibbons' books. Following these is a bibliography of works by and about Floyd Gibbons, with an introduction which explains fully its contents and organization"--Introduction. / Carbon copy of typescript. / "June, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

Previous issue date: 2014-12-23 / A Non-Inflationary Rate of Capacity Utilisation (NIRCU) for the Brazilian Economy has been developed based on microdata from the Manufacturing Survey and the Producer Price Index (IPA-M) series, both provided by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). Three types of NIRCU were evaluated: Survey NIRCU, Coincident NIRCU and Leading NIRCU. The first, using survey data alone aims at verifying the absence of inflationary pressure when companies declare in the Survey not to raise prices within the next three months and that their number of shifts equals the industry average. By matching the companies’ declarations with the Survey and the IPA-M, the other two NIRCUs check if the variation of the respective price indexes reflect the companies' assertion not to change their prices. The difference between the two latter approaches is that the first, the Coincident NIRCU, draws on Survey and price index data of the same period, whereas the Leading NIRCU verifies the price indexes of the quarter after the Survey. The effiency of these inflation pressure indicators was assessed by introducing the different NIRCU output gaps into the Phillips Curve framework and applying the Ordinary Least Square Method (OLS). The Leading NIRCU produced the worst results, while Survey and Coincident NIRCU performed well, especially the latter. They are comparable to most traditional output gap estimates.

Die Afrikaanse jeugteks en die New Age : die aanvlerking van 'n nuwe ideologie in Fransi Phillips se Die wilde kind, Theresa se droom en 'n Baie lang brief aan RolfVogel, Lina 28 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / The problem setting, as a basis for this study, is the application of central New Age ideas contained in three op Phillips' texts which are presented as juvenile texts. It was necessary to ascertain to which extent the application of New Age perceptions moved preconceived boundaries and thus caused a change in observation and consciousness. It was further imperative to analyse the manner in which Phillips integrated viewpoints of the New Age in order to indicate the shift of boundaries and the change in consciousness coupled herewith. The most important standpoints of the New Age were theoretically explored during this study. The conclusion was drawn that the focus within the New Age is on movement of boundaries and change in consciousness. Holism was indicated as the core around which the New Age movement centres. It was also found that Phillips applied the holistic train of thought in her texts in order to portray the relationship between antropos and cosmos, as well as to establish transformative relationships. In view of the aforementioned goals, the main focal point of the study was the holistic way in which the most central New Age ideas were incorporated into Phillips' texts. The idea-contents of the three texts, as well as Phillips' art of writing can be proffered as transformative holistic.

"Crossing the River" : the complexity of colonialism and slaveryBakkenberg, Mikael January 2011 (has links)
Caryl Phillips’s novel Crossing the River deals with European colonialism and the consequences of it. Crossing the River is a novel which embraces characters from colonized cultures as well as characters from colonizing cultures. Following a timeline that begins in 1752 and ends in 1963, the novel shows slavery in progress as well as what transpires in the aftermath of slavery In this essay I will argue that Caryl Phillips demonstrates the complexity of colonialism and slavery in his novel Crossing the River; he approaches the two concepts from different perspectives and shows us that colonialism and slavery are complicated concepts. Caryl Phillips uses narrative to demonstrate the negative sides of colonialism and slavery, to show that the negative aspects of the two concepts can affect not only the colonized people but also the colonizing people. Colonialism, in its traditional sense, is present in some of the novel’s episodes but slavery, in different forms, appears in all episodes. Nevertheless, all episodes in Crossing the River have a common origin; which Phillips reminds us about by using the relationship between plot and story. Diversity is an important theme in the novel. From a narrative perspective, Crossing the River has a diversity of narrators who tell their stories as well as other persons’ stories. There are female narrators as well as male ones; some narrators are known while other narrators are unknown. The ways the episodes are told are diversified. Some of the episodes follow a chronological line (“The Pagan Coast” and “Crossing the River”) while other episodes jump back and forth in time (“West” and “Somewhere in England”). The forms of narration are diversified, not only between the individual episodes but also within some of the episodes. Crossing the River plays with diversity in several layers. The structure of the novel is as diversified as the number of narrators, a diversity of ways of dealing with the main themes results in a diversity of fates for Phillips’s characters. Caryl Phillips combines structure with content to demonstrate that colonialism and slavery are problematic concepts: the negative consequences of the two concepts can, in different ways and in different degrees, affect colonized people as well as those responsible for colonialism.

Modelling and characterization of supported catalytic centresBell, Gillian January 1994 (has links)
A series of aluminia and titania promoted, silica- supported chromium (III) acetate catalysts were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prior to, and after, activation in oxygen at 780 C. The results indicated that Cr (VI) was formed in each case as a result of the activation process. Increased promoter metal binding energies implied an interaction between the promoter and silica support. It is proposed that there is insertion of aluminium and titanium atoms into the silica network, which leads to formation of surface silicates. A qualitative measure of the metal dispersions has been made using the XPS results. In general, the chromium dispersion fell on activation, but the greatest decline was seen with the lowest chromium loading (0.5% Cr), Promoter metal dispersion was unchanged on activation, except in the case of the highest titanium loading (4.35% Ti), where small titania clusters are formed. Mass spectral analysis of the gases evolved during thermal decomposition in argon led to a mechanism being proposed for the decomposition of the acetate precursor. The first step is dehydration of the silica support, which is followed by decompositon of acetate ligands to form an intermediate, which was thought to be a carbonate, and the final stage is the decomposition of this intermediate to chromium (III) oxide for the unpromoted catalysts. Where a promoter is present a structural and electronic interaction between the chromium complex and the promoter is proposed, which leads to formation of mixed surface oxides of perovskite (M(^II)Ti(^IV)0(_3)) or spinel (M(^II)Al(_2)(^III)0(_4)) structure, where M = Cr. For activation under oxygen the pattern of decomposition was much simpler. Studies of the promoted catalysts showed the oxidation to occur—in two stages. It was not clear which chromium species were present after the first step, but the second step led to the formation of chromium (VI) oxide for all catalysts. Modelling of the adsorption sites on metal surfaces has also been undertaken with a series of triosmium carbonyl complexes containing ligands derived from aniline, phenol, pyrrole, furan, thiophene and benzene. These complexes have been characterized using Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy and their vibrational spectra assigned in full. The usefulness of these complexes as models, and in the assignment of vibrational spectra of adsorbates on metal surfaces, is discussed.

Philosophy of religion as hermeneutics of contemplation according to Dewi Z. PhillipsSiwiec, John Andrew January 2004 (has links)
Dewi Z. Phillips maintains that philosophy must have a contemplative character. Applied to religion, it takes the form of a hermeneutics of contemplation that emphasizes the role concepts play in human life. While some philosophers try to bring philosophy to bear on to religion, others try to bring religion to bear on to philosophy; seeing their task as being for or against religion. According to Phillips, both these views are confused. Instead, the philosophy of religion must strive to understand religion on its own terms: showing that a sensibility should be possible that does justice to both belief and atheism. In order to appreciate Phillips' philosophy of religion, it is essential to recognize the three authors that have contributed to his thinking: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Soren Kierkegaard, and Simone Weil. From Wittgenstein, Phillips learns the philosophical method, Kierkegaard teaches Phillips what it means to be a religious author, and Simone Weil imparts Phillips with an authentic sense of religious belief and understanding. Throughout his career Phillips has been poorly understood because he refuses to be pinned down to the categories and frameworks within which philosophers of religion and theologians traditionally define themselves. For Phillips, a contemplative conception of the philosophy of religion endeavours to show just how far philosophy can bring one in a religious dimension: trying to enable a person to be conceptually clear about the matters at hand and to realize when a personal judgment must be made.
