Diversity Revealed: Photovoice Methodology as a Means for Understanding How Teens Construct Diversity

Through the partnership of standpoint theory and photovoice method, the present study looked at how teenagers, attending a multicultural education camp, define diversity, as well as what the participants considered to be the benefits and limitations of diversity. Standpoint theory gives the theoretical perspective to understand the marginalized voice of teenagers, while photovoice provides the tools to better capture and understand their marginalized voice. This study was situated in a professionally-developed camp, Camp CommUNITY, that emphasizes multicultural awareness amongst teens. Nine participants and 46 pictures were analyzed. Resulting from open coding, 11 categories and 6 themes were identified. Each theme and definitions of diversity are approached with a dialectical perspective, yielding to the model of dialectical dimensions of diversity. To answer Research Question 2, participants identified both benefits and limitations for photovoice method. Additional theoretical, practical, and methodological implications, limitations, and directions for future research are addressed.

Hurricane Harvey and the Devastation of Dispossession

Disaster science is a procedural field often construed as producing blanket policies that attempt to cover everyone, but the complexity of human lived experiences must have a space to exist within disaster science if its research and findings are to be effective. This thesis illustrates that disaster policies and publications often leave out the most vulnerable communities—those in greatest need of collective support. Through critically analyzing beautification through green space, discussing photovoice interviews, and by deconstructing public preparedness documents published by Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HCOHSEM), it is clear that accumulation by dispossession filters down through not only property and money but also access to green spaces and a healthy life. By dispossessing low-income communities of their right to green spaces and life, those communities end up in places that are environmentally dangerous, leaving them at a disadvantage in the disaster preparedness and recovery process. This thesis serves as a case study highlighting how HCOHSEM failed to provide low-income communities with assistance prior to, during, and after Hurricane Harvey. The lessons from these gaps in protective measures show that public policies need to be malleable to ensure residents of any community are covered. Though no two communities are alike, other cities and federal emergency entities can learn about what public policy measures require progressive changes to better serve the most vulnerable communities.

Using Photovoice to Derive the Shared Experiences of Adolescents at a Camp for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a disability characterized by social communication deficits, repetitive and restrictive behaviors, and language and communication deficits. Its prevalence among the general population has led to increased efforts to intervene effectively during childhood and adolescence. Prior quantitative and qualitative research suggests that camps are an effective setting to deliver social skills intervention for children with ASD; however, there are gaps in research that need to be addressed, such as a lack of empirical qualitative evidence, difficulty with language and communication issues inherent to ASD, and limited reliable studies involving the photovoice methodologies. The research questions designed to address such gaps asked what a camp for adolescents with ASD might mean to participants and whether such a camp might produce a change in belonging, self-confidence, and independence among its campers. As such, this study employed the photovoice qualitative methodology to interview 8 adolescent males about their experiences at Camp Jigsaw, a social skills camp in the southeastern United States of America. Results of phenomenological qualitative analysis suggest that the most dominant themes expressed by campers were Positive Emotions, Socialization, Unique Experiences, Collective Identity, and Self-Improvement. The interplay and linkages between these themes revealed that the security of belonging with a group of like-minded peers resulted in increased independent experiences and self-confidence among participants of Camp Jigsaw.

Teaching and learning nature-based physical activity in Physical and Health Education: From pre-service teachers to K-12 students

The overall aim of this dissertation was to better understand the learning and teaching of NBPA in PHE experiences for teachers and adolescent students. A secondary aim was to better understand the learning and teaching cycle for NBPA reform in PHE. To achieve these aims, I conducted three interrelated studies that explored: (a) how pre-service teachers learn to teach NBPA in PHE, (b) in-service educators’ perspectives on learning and teaching NBPA, and (c) adolescent student experiences with NBPAs in and beyond PHE. These three studies explored the learning cycle from pre-service instruction, to in-service professional development, to, finally, the impact on the students’ learning. Individual findings are discussed in each of the three studies, and two overarching themes are discussed as findings for the overall body of research: (a) NBPA as a conduit for place- and land-based education; and (b) NBPA as an effective form of PHE reform. / Graduate / 2023-07-07

“Exploring Deafhood”: Investigating the experiences of d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who faced barriers to Deaf culture

This research aims to build upon existing literature and explore the experiences of d/Deaf and HoH people who grew up in Southern Ontario and were raised outside of the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and/or without access to sign language. / Throughout the literature, there is existing research on the experiences of people in the Deaf community from a culturally Deaf perspective and from a medicalized perspective of the condition of hearing loss; however, there is very literature on the experiences of people who do not fall within either of these binary views of what being d/Deaf and HoH is. This research aims to build upon existing literature and explore the experiences of d/Deaf and HoH people who grew up in Southern Ontario and were raised outside of the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and/or without access to signed language. This research is theoretically underpinned by critical disability theory and deaf critical theory—otherwise known as deaf crit—to broadly understand the nuances of how d/Deaf and HoH people are impacted by structural, systemic, and interpersonal experiences of audism, power, and oppression. This study relied on Photovoice as the research methodology to best center the perspectives of the participants through visual and textual analysis. Three participants participated in four virtual Photovoice workshops where they shared photographs in response to different prompts about their experiences as d/Deaf and HoH people. The ensuing discussion found the key themes: 1) the ability to explore their self-identity as d/Deaf and HoH people; 2) the importance of developing pathways to community early on in life; 3) the need for multiple supports when receiving care. This research contributes to the literature that centers the nuanced perspectives of those who are d/Deaf and HoH but raised without access to Deaf culture, community, and/or sign language and makes suggestions for future practice and policy that centers diverse needs and desires for support. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

UNHEARD VOICES: EXPLORING PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY IN EMERGING OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE WITH MEN TRANSITIONING TO THE COMMUNITY POST-INCARCERATION

There is a call for occupational therapists to extend their practice from correctional institutions to community settings with people who have been incarcerated; an emerging area of occupational therapy (OT) practice. However, with no published studies from the perspective of therapists in emerging settings, understanding the nature of emerging OT practice with people who have been incarcerated becomes problematic. Limited information about community integration makes it difficult to fill practice gaps and adhere to principles of evidence-based practice (EBP). Simultaneously, men with a criminal record experience stigma and exclusion from participation in everyday life extending well-beyond the completion of their sentence. Often denied a voice by people who control the media, correctional policies or political discussion about crime in the community, overcoming stereotypes of deviant, violent or aggressive criminals is difficult. The results of a participatory action research (PAR) project completed by men with a criminal record and a critical, first-person account about emerging OT practice from the perspective of a registered occupational therapist are presented. Through Photovoice, co-researchers collected and analyzed photographs during group sessions that were audio recorded, transcribed, analyzed and summarized by the primary author. Summaries contributed to critical dialogue with the co-researchers throughout the collection, analysis and, writing stages. ‘The cards you are dealt’ emerged as a metaphor depicting everyday life as a strategic game played with cards specific to a person’s social location. Co-researchers shared their individual and collective narratives through various knowledge dissemination methods. Documenting narratives from the perspective of men with a criminal record counteracts status quo understandings of community re-entry, creating space for marginalized populations to share stories that might otherwise be lost. Autoethnography, a post-modern, interpretive approach to research explores the meaning of emerging OT practice with criminalized men. Data were collected through reflective journaling and clinical process notes that upon review, guided systematic reflections required to write and re-write an analytical narrative of key experiences. Role-emerging placements were found to influence the chosen emerging setting. Preliminary insights about the role of evidence-based practice and advocacy work in supporting emerging OT practice is presented. Where occupation-focused research and regulatory body support remains limited, autoethnography contributes to professional development and the identification of knowledge gaps. Together, this thesis contributes to knowledge about: (1) emerging OT practice with men transitioning to the community post-incarceration; (2) daily life/community integration from the perspective of criminalized men in the community; (3) tensions in emerging OT practice; and (4) insights about the nature of anti-oppressive OT practice. / Thesis / Master of Science Rehabilitation Science (MSc) / This master’s thesis focuses on role-emerging occupational therapy (OT) practice with men with a criminal record. As a registered occupational therapist working with co-researchers with lived experience of incarceration, we completed a research project using photography to create and share narratives about community reintegration. The men generated a research question, collected data (photographs), completed data analysis as a group, disseminated knowledge and contributed to the publishing process as co-authors. A shared metaphor increased understanding about socio-political factors that impact community integration for men with a criminal record. Because emerging settings have been primarily explored as an educational tool for OT students, the role of evidence-based practice, advocacy and the potential of emerging OT practice with criminalized men adds a critical narrative from the perspective of a registered occupational therapist. Autoethnography is used as a method of research and professional development. Therefore, this thesis adds to the limited information about emerging OT practice with men transitioning to the community post-incarceration, tensions in emerging practice, community integration from the perspective of men with lived experience of incarceration and provides preliminary insights into the concepts of anti-oppressive OT practice.

Atuação da enfermeira obstétrica: compreendendo a sua vivência e a realidade da assistência / Performance of midwife: understanding their experience and the reality of assistance

Muitos esforços mundiais têm sido empregados para melhorar as condições de saúde na gestação e nascimento. A cada ano, aproximadamente 350 mil mulheres morrem durante a gravidez ou parto, sendo que 99% dessas mortes acontecem em países em desenvolvimento. O Ministério da Saúde vem desenvolvendo ações no sentido de melhorar o quadro da assistência materna, promovendo atividades para qualificar os profissionais e fomentar a atenção obstétrica e neonatal humanizada baseada em evidências científicas, além de garantir os direitos sexuais e reprodutivos das mulheres brasileiras. O cenário encontrado é de marginalização da enfermagem obstétrica; a enfermeira obstétrica apresenta dificuldades na atuação, tanto na realização de consultas obstétricas quanto no acompanhamento do parto e nascimento. Sua prática se mostra desprivilegiada de poder, pois não há reconhecimento da sua qualificação profissional. Este estudo tem como objetivos compreender a vivência da enfermeira obstétrica no cenário da admissão, pré-parto, parto e pós-parto imediato e interpretar os aspectos facilitadores e dificultadores de sua inserção nos serviços de atenção maternal. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, desenvolvida com um grupo de enfermeiras obstétricas da cidade de Londrina-PR. A coleta de dados foi desenvolvida no mês de dezembro de 2015 através das seguintes etapas: 1. Entrevista individual e semiestruturada com 20 enfermeiras obstétricas, tendo como critério de seleção a atuação nos serviços de atenção materna, nos setores de admissão, pré-parto, parto e pós-parto imediato por pelo menos um ano; 2. Aplicação da metodologia Photovoice com a participação de 10 enfermeiras obstétricas, pretendendo compreender as fragilidades e potencialidades encontradas em sua prática assistencial. Nesta fase, as enfermeiras obstétricas produziram e apresentaram as fotografias em um grupo focal para discussão, gerando os temas de análise, que, em conjunto com os dados obtidos nas entrevistas individuais, formaram a base teórica que possibilitou alcançar os objetivos propostos no estudo. O referencial teórico adotado foi a antropologia interpretativa, com o enfoque na cultura das organizações, que permitiu a análise e compreensão dos dados. Os resultados foram descritos e analisados em torno de cinco categorias temáticas, das quais as três iniciais emergiram das entrevistas iniciais e as outras duas do grupo focal com a metodologia photovoice, a saber: Acolhimento e vínculo: cuidados assistenciais que transmitem segurança à parturiente; Autonomia na enfermagem obstétrica: percepções da prática assistencial; Sentimentos emanados na atenção da enfermeira obstétrica nos cenários da admissão, pré-parto, parto e pós-parto imediato; Fatores facilitadores na assistência da enfermeira obstétrica: potencialidades emanadas nos cenários de admissão, pré- parto, parto e pós-parto imediato; Fatores dificultadores na assistência da enfermeira obstétrica: fragilidades afloradas nos cenários de admissão, pré-parto, parto e pós-parto imediato. A situação encontrada é a de desprivilégio da assistência obstétrica: em quase todas as instituições prevalece ainda o modelo biomédico, concentrado em intervenções e com poucas ações de humanização. Mesmo quando as enfermeiras obstétricas estão inseridas na assistência, elas encontram obstáculos para o desenvolvimento de sua prática assistencial, tanto pela equipe multiprofissional em que estão inseridas quanto pelas organizações onde atuam. Foram apontados como facilitadores/potencialidades o estabelecimento do planejamento familiar, a humanização na assistência ao parto, o trabalho em equipe, a educação continuada e permanente, a autonomia, a infraestrutura adequada. Já como pontos fragilidades/dificuldades, a ausência de pré-natal completo, a falta de realização de partos nas maternidades onde atuam, a ausência ou demora no estabelecimento do contato precoce mãe e filho, a falta de informatização nos processos burocráticos, a violência obstétrica e a falta de estrutura adequada. Por fim, considera-se que os resultados apontaram para uma realidade cultural que não pode ficar omissa. As enfermeiras obstétricas são profissionais capacitadas para atuarem na humanização da assistência e contribuírem para a redução de índices de morbimortalidade materna em nosso país. Logo, os achados deste estudo podem fomentar ações e mudanças nas organizações de saúde. / Many worldwide efforts have been employed to improve health conditions during pregnancy and birth. Each year, approximately 350,000 women die during pregnancy or childbirth, and 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries. The Ministry of Health has been developing actions to improve the framework for maternal care, promoting activities to qualify professionals and foster obstetric and neonatal care humanized based on scientific evidence, and ensure sexual and reproductive rights of Brazilian women. The setting is found marginalization of midwifery, midwife has difficulty in acting, both in performing obstetrical consultations and in monitoring the labor and birth. His practice shown underprivileged power because there is no recognition of their professional qualifications. This study aims to understand the experience of midwife at the admission stage, pre-natal, delivery and immediate postpartum period and interpret the advantages and constraints of their inclusion in the maternal care services. This is a qualitative research conducted with a group of midwives in the city of Londrina. Data collection was developed in December 2015 through the following steps: 1. Individual interview and semi-structured interviews with 20 midwives, with the selection criteria acting in maternal care services, the admission sectors, pre- labor, delivery and immediate postpartum period for at least 1 year; 2. Photovoice Methodology application with the participation of 10 midwives, intending to understand the weaknesses and strengths found in their care practice. At this stage, midwife produced and presented the photos in a focus group for discussion, generating the analysis of topics, together with the data obtained in individual interviews formed the theoretical basis which allowed achieve the objectives proposed in the study. The theoretical framework adopted was the interpretive anthropology, with a focus on culture of organizations, which allowed the analysis and understanding of the data. The results were described and analyzed around five thematic categories, the first three emerged from the initial interviews and the other two focus group with photovoice methodology, namely: Reception and attachment: supportive care that transmit security to the woman in labor; Autonomy in midwifery: perceptions of nursing practice; Feelings emanating from the care of the midwife in the admission of scenarios, antepartum, delivery and immediate postpartum; Factors facilitators in the midwife assistance: emanating potential in admission scenarios, antepartum, delivery and immediate postpartum; Hindering factors in midwife care: weaknesses touched upon the admission of scenarios, antepartum, delivery and immediate postpartum. The situation found is the marginalization of obstetric care in almost all institutions still prevails the biomedical model, focused on interventions and few humanizing actions, even when midwives are placed in care, they are obstacles to the development of its care practice, both by the multidisciplinary team where they are inserted as the organizations where they work. Were appointed as facilitators / potential establishment of family planning, the humanization of childbirth care, teamwork, continuous and permanent education, autonomy, adequate infrastructure. Already as points weaknesses / difficulties the absence of complete prenatal care, the lack of completion of deliveries in hospitals where they operate, the absence or delay in early contact establishment mother and child, the lack of computerization in bureaucratic processes, obstetric violence and lack of adequate structure. Finally, it is considered that the results pointed to a cultural reality that cannot be silent. Midwife are professionals trained to work in the humanization of care and contribute to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality rates in our country. Thus, the findings of this study can foster action and change in healthcare organizations.

O processo de amamentação e suas implicações na vida da mãe adolescente / The breastfeeding process and its implications in the life of the teenage mother

A amamentação possui vários benefícios para a saúde da criança, mulher-mãe, família, sociedade e planeta, se constituindo em uma prática importante. Entretanto, recebe influências sociais, culturais e econômicas que resultam das condições concretas em que a mulher-mãe-nutriz vive e que, na situação especial de ser adolescente, pode resultar no desmame. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral compreender a vivência de amamentação de um grupo de mães adolescentes. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa com utilização do método photovoice, desenvolvida junto a um grupo de 12 mães adolescentes que compareceram, em consulta puerperal e ou de puericultura, à rede de atenção primária à saúde do município de Ribeirão Preto - SP. Com a aprovação do Comitê de Pesquisa local (CAAE: 50437515.2.0000.5393), a coleta de dados foi desenvolvida entre março de 2016 e fevereiro de 2017. Os dados foram coletados, em grande parte, no domicílio das mães adolescentes, por meio de duas entrevistas (uma estruturada, para caracterização das participantes e outra não estruturada, para investigação da vivência em amamentação) e uma sessão de grupo focal. Os dados foram transcritos e analisados, de acordo com a análise temática indutiva, sob o referencial teórico da Psicologia sócio-histórica de Vygotski. Os resultados foram descritos e analisados em torno de três temas: Construindo sua história em amamentação; Revelando singularidades do cotidiano da amamentação das mães adolescentes; Saberes e práticas construídos pelas mães adolescentes. O cotidiano de amamentação das mães adolescentes é fortemente influenciado pelo apoio de seu meio familiar e social que pode se constituir em fator facilitador ou dificultador da amamentação. A mãe da adolescente é a pessoa mais influente na iniciação e manutenção da amamentação, seguida do pai do bebê, parentes e profissionais de saúde, que ora apoiam ora desestimulam essa prática. Também vivenciam a solidão e/ou desamparo e até o abandono por parte da família ou do meio social. Somam-se as responsabilidades dos afazeres domésticos e dos cuidados com o filho, as dificuldades de permanência na escola e de trabalho fora do lar e a conciliação com a amamentação. O aleitamento materno influencia em necessidades de lazer, sono e repouso. Por outro lado, a satisfação das necessidades de conforto e de higiene e fatores como a calma, paciência e persistência em amamentar facilitaram o cotidiano em amamentação da mãe adolescente. Seus saberes e práticas em amamentação são construídos por meio da observação de mulheres de sua convivência, de experiências anteriores e de informações dos profissionais de saúde, que ora incentivam, ora desestimulam a amamentação. Essa construção está pautada na perspectiva biológica da amamentação. As mães apresentam preocupação com a estética mamária e absorvem as crenças, tradições e o modo de vida de suas culturas familiar e social. Consideramos a necessidade de o enfermeiro dar vez e voz às diversas faces que permeiam o contexto de vida individual, familiar e social das adolescentes, por meio de uma atitude de escuta acolhedora para a construção de vínculo de confiança em toda e qualquer oportunidade de contato com elas, a fim de favorecer a amamentação / Breastfeeding has several health benefits for child and mother, family, society and planet, being an important practice. However, it receives social, cultural and economic influences that result from the concrete conditions in which the woman-mother-nursing mother lives; and regarding the special situation of being an adolescent, it can result in weaning. This study aimed to understand the experience of breastfeeding in a group of teenage mothers. This is a photovoice qualitative research developed with a group of 12 teenage mothers, who attended the puerperal appointment and/or the childcare visits at the primary health care network in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP. After the approval of the Ethics Research Committee (CAAE: 50437515.2.0000.5393), the data collection was performed from March 2016 to February 2017. Data were collected largely in the teenage mothers\' home, through two interviews (one structured to characterize the participants and the other unstructured to investigate the experience of breastfeeding) and a focus group session. Data were transcribed and analyzed according to the thematic inductive analysis, using as theoretical reference the socio-historical Psychology of Vygotsky. The results were described and analyzed around three themes: Building a breastfeeding history; Revealing singularities of the breastfeeding routine of teenage mothers; Knowledge and practices built by teenage mothers. The breastfeeding routine of teenage mothers is strongly influenced by the support of their family and social environment, which can be a facilitating or difficult factor for breastfeeding. The mother of the teenage mother is the most influential person in the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding, followed by the baby\'s father, relatives and health professionals, who can encourage or discourage this practice. They also experience loneliness and/or helplessness and even abandonment by the family or the social environment. The responsibilities of household chores and childcare, difficulties in staying at school and of working outside home and its reconciliation with breastfeeding are faced in this situation. Breastfeeding influences leisure, sleep and rest needs. On the other hand, the satisfaction of the needs of comfort and hygiene and factors such as calmness, patience and persistence in breastfeeding facilitated the breastfeeding routine of the teenage mother. Their knowledge and practices in breastfeeding are built through the observation of women from their coexistence, previous experiences and information from health professionals, who can encourage or discourage breastfeeding. It is necessary for nurses to give voice to the various faces that permeate the individual, family and social life context of adolescents, through a welcoming listening attitude to build a bond of trust in any opportunity to contact them to encourage breastfeeding

Somam-se as responsabilidades dos afazeres domésticos e dos cuidados com o filho, as dificuldades de permanência na escola e de trabalho fora do lar e a conciliação com a amamentação. O aleitamento materno influencia em necessidades de lazer, sono e repouso. Por outro lado, a satisfação das necessidades de conforto e de higiene e fatores como a calma, paciência e persistência em amamentar facilitaram o cotidiano em amamentação da mãe adolescente. Seus saberes e práticas em amamentação são construídos por meio da observação de mulheres de sua convivência, de experiências anteriores e de informações dos profissionais de saúde, que ora incentivam, ora desestimulam a amamentação. Essa construção está pautada na perspectiva biológica da amamentação. As mães apresentam preocupação com a estética mamária e absorvem as crenças, tradições e o modo de vida de suas culturas familiar e social. Consideramos a necessidade de o enfermeiro dar vez e voz às diversas faces que permeiam o contexto de vida individual, familiar e social das adolescentes, por meio de uma atitude de escuta acolhedora para a construção de vínculo de confiança em toda e qualquer oportunidade de contato com elas, a fim de favorecer a amamentação / Breastfeeding has several health benefits for child and mother, family, society and planet, being an important practice. However, it receives social, cultural and economic influences that result from the concrete conditions in which the woman-mother-nursing mother lives; and regarding the special situation of being an adolescent, it can result in weaning. This study aimed to understand the experience of breastfeeding in a group of teenage mothers. This is a photovoice qualitative research developed with a group of 12 teenage mothers, who attended the puerperal appointment and/or the childcare visits at the primary health care network in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP. After the approval of the Ethics Research Committee (CAAE: 50437515.2.0000.5393), the data collection was performed from March 2016 to February 2017. Data were collected largely in the teenage mothers\' home, through two interviews (one structured to characterize the participants and the other unstructured to investigate the experience of breastfeeding) and a focus group session. Data were transcribed and analyzed according to the thematic inductive analysis, using as theoretical reference the socio-historical Psychology of Vygotsky. The results were described and analyzed around three themes: Building a breastfeeding history; Revealing singularities of the breastfeeding routine of teenage mothers; Knowledge and practices built by teenage mothers. The breastfeeding routine of teenage mothers is strongly influenced by the support of their family and social environment, which can be a facilitating or difficult factor for breastfeeding. The mother of the teenage mother is the most influential person in the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding, followed by the baby\'s father, relatives and health professionals, who can encourage or discourage this practice. They also experience loneliness and/or helplessness and even abandonment by the family or the social environment. The responsibilities of household chores and childcare, difficulties in staying at school and of working outside home and its reconciliation with breastfeeding are faced in this situation. Breastfeeding influences leisure, sleep and rest needs. On the other hand, the satisfaction of the needs of comfort and hygiene and factors such as calmness, patience and persistence in breastfeeding facilitated the breastfeeding routine of the teenage mother. Their knowledge and practices in breastfeeding are built through the observation of women from their coexistence, previous experiences and information from health professionals, who can encourage or discourage breastfeeding. It is necessary for nurses to give voice to the various faces that permeate the individual, family and social life context of adolescents, through a welcoming listening attitude to build a bond of trust in any opportunity to contact them to encourage breastfeeding
