A Comparison of Balance and Postural Stability Assessment Tools: BESS Versus NeuroCom Balance Manager

Joliffe, Jamie 01 May 2012 (has links)
Postural stability assessment tools are one of the many ways concussions can be assessed and return to play decisions can be made; two of which are the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) and force plate technology. OBJECTIVE: Validate the modified BESS used by Utah State University by comparing it to equivalent tests on the NeuroCom Balance Manager System. METHODS: 114 current or previous Utah State football players ranging in age from 18-24. Each athlete conducted a baseline BESS test during their pre-participation physical and NeuroCom testing was conducted during the summer of 2011. NeuroCom testing included a modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB) both on a firm and foam surface, a single leg stance test with eyes open and closed on both a firm and foam surface, and a tandem walk test where end sway was recorded. BESS testing was done depending on when the athlete arrived at Utah State. Correlations were reported for athletes that arrived for the current year and also for the athletes that arrived for any year prior to that. A Welch's T-Test was conducted to analyze any differences between the two groups. The tandem stance on the foam condition for the BESS had a statistically significant difference, so that variable was excluded and the adjusted correlations were then reported. There were eight correlation conditions that were determined by the individuals who could and could not complete the entire time on the single leg stance with eyes closed on a firm as well as a foam surface. RESULTS: The only variable associated with the NeuroCom Balance Manager that had consistent correlations with the composite BESS score was the CTSIB foam condition; with a 0.28 correlation with individuals regardless of single leg stance with eyes closed, 0.39 with individuals who completed the whole time on the firm without consideration for the foam, 0.27 with individuals who did not complete the whole time on the foam without consideration for the firm and 0.39 with individuals who could complete the whole time on the firm but not on the foam. CONCLUSION: There appears to be some correlation with CTSIB foam conditions and the composite BESS.

Proposta de procedimento para verificar a viabilidade de utilização do pelo do Canis Lupus Familaris da raça poodle na fabricação de fios têxteis / Proposal for a procedure to check the feasibility of using Canis lupus familaris (poodle) hair in the manufacture of textile yarn

Lobo, Renato Nogueirol 16 December 2014 (has links)
Os resultados obtidos indicam a viabilidade tanto do uso do pelo de poodle para a fabricação de fios têxteis, quanto da aplicação da metodologia proposta / The textile industry has been responsible for the creation of new materials and for the search for streamlining their processes. The use of the poodle hair is an alternative to reduce the amount of the dog hair discarded in pet stores, through recycling of the waste. The collection of this kind of waste must follow certain standards developed by the Health Surveillance, requiring the pet shops to pay for the disposal service. The use of this kind of dog hair, in addition to create the possibility of reverse engineering, would also provide a more useful and sustainable disposal of it. The aim of this paper is to present procedures to verify the feasibility of poodle hair fibers in the manufacture of textile yarn. The poodle fibers were collected in São Paulo and separated into three lots: clear, brown and dark. In order to simulate the market conditions, the three lots of fibers were homogenized by hand in a single batch, which was named mixture. Through microscopy testing of poodle fibers was possible to verify the similarity of these fibers with sheep\'s wool. To allow comparison between the fibers, two types of wool have been selected in the market 36\'s and 56\'s and it have been performed, on six types of fibers, the physical tests of fineness, Young\'s modulus, toughness and elongation. The analysis was conducted by using the statistical tools of analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a 95% confidence interval, and the box plot. The results indicate the feasibility of both the poodle hair for the manufacture of textile yarns, and the use of the proposed methodology

Window Thread Test Methods / Test metoder för sedelfönstertrådar

Reunanen, Kristian January 2011 (has links)
This final thesis describes the currently available processes for testing security threads in banknote papers. The currency market has generally two types of security threads, embedded and window threads.  It is generally important to optimize the adhesive used. This requires a test method with good precision and low operator independence. By achieving and using good test methods the process of evaluating a new products pros and cons can be done with higher precision. The thread adhesion properties are of great importance when developing new adhesion systems. The main reason for testing the threads adhesion is to verify that the thread cannot be removed in an intact form from the banknote but also for product development processes.  The current test methods were developed by introducing new parameters and sample preparations specifications. The data evaluation system was also upgraded.  The measurement of thread adhesion vs. position in CD and vs. time showed expected results. A new and more reliable test method was implemented and evaluated and was together with the improved current method able to detect same properties independently.
