Learning from Langland : theo-poetic resources for the post-Hind landscape

In the last ten years the Church of England has tried, by means of two reports leading to what I term the ‘Hind settlement’, to re-configure its provision of theological education. The tensions generated by the attempt to hold together different discourses and to impose regional re-organisation in the context of complex developments both in higher education and in patterns of lay and ordained ministry form the basis of my critique of Hind. I argue that Hind’s recourse to the image of the ‘body of Christ’ in the service of an instrumentalist model of ministry exposes inadequacies of a theological anthropological, Christological and ecclesiological nature. I identify a medieval text, Piers Plowman, as a conversation partner which offers a different way of negotiating an analogously difficult set of issues around learning, discipleship and power. My hermeneutical approach to the poem sees its primary impetus as arising from the constant interplay between the experiences of daily life and the attempt to work out a personal and social understanding of salvation. By comparing the ways in which Hind and Langland explore learning as measurable progress, and lay and clerical models of learning, I propose that Piers Plowman offers some valuable resources to the next stage of the Hind process. Not only does the poem foreground the chaotic co-existence of multiple voices in a marketplace of competing definitions of learning, and acknowledge the recalcitrance of communities when presented with opportunities to change, but it also, in the figure of Piers, hints at the possibility of going beyond the lay/clerical impasse. The poem’s recognition of sin and the need for repentance, in contrast to Hind language of management and effectiveness, and its requirement of the reader to participate in the making of new meaning, present an ongoing challenge to a culture of ‘learning outcomes’.

Les poèmes allitératifs anglais, dont le représentant le plus illustre est le Piers Plowman de William Langland, s'inscrivent au sein d'un système de communication en pleine évolution dans l'Angleterre du XIVe siècle. L'extension de la literacy – l'aptitude à lire et à écrire – et le développement de l'anglais en sont les éléments les plus significatifs. L'objet de cette étude est l'interaction entre les différents aspects de ce système et les poèmes, afin de dégager toute la richesse de textes littéraires qui peuvent être considérés comme des sources historiques à part entière. Les thèmes abordés sont nombreux, au regard des multiples intérêts des poètes, préalablement replacés dans leur cadre social et culturel : l'organisation de la société, le gouvernement et la justice, l'institution ecclésiastique et la connaissance, la perception du salut de chacun et de tous, le positionnement des auteurs par rapport à leur activité. Leurs critiques, mais aussi leurs propositions et leurs espoirs, reflètent et enrichissent un dialogue de plus en plus large au sein de la société anglaise.

Poetic Properties: Legal Forms and Literary Documents in Early English Literature

This thesis argues that the Middle English alliterative prosody of the Piers Plowman tradition was influenced by a discourse combining law, history, homily and poetry which was inherited from the administrative practices of the Anglo-Saxon period. As literary and legal textual genres developed recognizably distinct formal characteristics in the later Middle Ages, the combination of homiletic rhetoric and alliterative sound-patterning evoked a surviving discourse in which the formal characteristics of poems and documents were less clearly distinguished. Thus insofar as it evoked Anglo-Saxon textual culture, Piers Plowman provided a formal model which was particularly suitable to criticisms of political institutions that consolidated their power by developing new distinctions between the genres of bureaucratic texts. In each of the texts and traditions studied – Wulfstan’s homiletic law code I–II Cnut and its Latin translations, The First Worcester Fragment, Laȝamon’s Arthurian Brut chronicle-poem, The South English Legendary "Life of St. Egwine", and the Piers Plowman tradition poem Mum and the Sothsegger – apparently “literary” devices are used to authorize historically-based “legal” claims, particularly on behalf of ecclesiastical institutions looking to maintain their local influence in the face of increasingly consolidated royal administrative authority. Though oaths played a much less important procedural role after the Norman Conquest than they did in the Anglo-Saxon period, the appearance of "creative" authenticating procedures in "commemorative" texts created the appearance of orality to post-Conquest readers, to criticize a government which claimed its English "common" law to originate in the remotest recorded antiquity, even as it abandoned the practices actually recorded in the earliest surviving law codes and documents to be written in England. Comparing these texts allows a deeper understanding of their shared authenticating strategies, and also a re-appraisal of the methods we use to describe the relationships between medieval documents and authors, literature and law, texts and contexts. Appended to the dissertation is an edition of the SEL "Life of St. Egwine." Because Egwine's hagiographic tradition is so thematically invested in political concerns and closely interconnected with legal documents attributed to Egwine himself, the edition provides an opportunity to take a "disjunctively" literary and diplomatic approach to the tradition, in the process exploring some of the practical implications of the larger theoretical issues raised by the thesis as a whole.

Experimental Investigation Of Local Scour Around Bridge Pier Groups

It is an important task that design engineers in practice predict the local scour around bridge piers as accurately as possible because excessive local scour around bridge piers unbalance and demolish the bridges. Many equations have been proposed previously by various researchers, based on their experimental findings, but no general method has been developed so far due to the complexity of the topic. In the present study two new bridge pier groups were employed to investigate the inclination effect of the most upstream and downstream piers on the local scours around all piers. Total of 72 experiments have been conducted with 3 inclination angles, one of which representing the vertical case, each experiment lasting 6 hours, under uniform flow and clear-water conditions for a range of water depths and flow velocities on the uniform bed material. It is clearly observed and measured that the amount of local scour reduces substantially by the effect of inclination in the group piers, especially the reduction in the scour around the most upstream pier is found notable. Based on the experimental data, regression analyses are made and an empirical scour depth equation is developed for each individual pier in the pier groups studied. Comparisons with the similar studies performed by other researchers have been made and the results discussed.

A New Approach To Estimate Settlements Under Footings On Rammed Aggregate Pier Groups

This study uses a 3D finite element program, calibrated with the results of a full scale instrumented load test on a limited size footing, to estimate the settlement improvement factor for footings resting on rammed aggregate pier groups. A simplified 3D finite element model (Composite Soil Model) was developed, which takes into account the increase of stiffness around the piers during the ramming process. Design charts for settlement improvement factors of square footings of different sizes (B = 2.4m to 4.8m) resting on aggregate pier groups of different area ratios (AR = 0.087 to 0.349), pier moduli (Ecolumn = 36MPa to 72MPa), and with various compressible clay layer strengths (cu = 20kPa to 60kPa) and thicknesses (L = 5m to 15m) were prepared using this calibrated 3D finite element model. It was found that, the settlement improvement factor increases as the area ratio, pier modulus and footing pressure increase. On the other hand, the settlement improvement factor is observed to decrease as the undrained shear strength and thickness of compressible clay and footing size increase. After using the model to study the behaviour of floating piers, it was concluded that, the advantage of using end bearing piers instead of floating piers for reducing settlements increases as the area ratio of piers increases, the elasticity modulus value of the piers increases, the thickness of the compressible clay layer decreases and the undrained shear strength of the compressible clay decreases.

A Study On Risk Assessment Of Scour Vulnerable Bridges

Many river bridges fail or are seriously damaged due to excessive local scouring around piers and abutments. To protect a bridge from scour-induced failure, it should be designed properly against excessive scouring and its scour criticality should be checked regularly throughout the service life to take prompt action. The Federal Highway Administration of United States (FHWA) developed a program, HYRISK, as a basis for evaluation of existing scour failure risk of a bridge. It provides implementation of a risk-based model, which is used to calculate the annual risk of scour failure of a bridge or series of bridges in monetary values. A case study is carried out for a bridge crossing Fol Creek in Black Sea Region (close to Vakfikebir), for the illustration of this software. Besides, hydraulic analysis and scour depth computations of the bridge are carried out via HEC-RAS program. Also, a study is carried out to recommend scour countermeasures that can be applied to the aforementioned bridge.

Ledo apkrovų įtaka hidromazgų taurų gelžbetoninėms konstrukcijoms / Influence of ice load to the reinforced concrete piers structures in hydroschemes

Hidromazgų taurų būklę, ilgaamžiškumą lemia juos veikiantys poveikiai ir apkrovos, susidarantys veikiant klimato sąlygoms, agresyviai aplinkai bei kitiems įvairiems veiksniams. Tyrimų tikslas – įvertinti Lietuvos tvenkiniuose susidarančias ledo apkrovas ir jų įtaką taurų gelžbetoninėms konstrukcijoms. Šiam tikslui pasiekti buvo atlikta literatūros analizė, siekiant nustatyti ledo apkrovų tipus. 2007 – 2010 m. mokslinių ekspedicijų metu natūriniais tyrimais įvertinta 10 hidromazgų taurų gelžbetoninių konstrukcijų būklė pagal STR.1.12.03:2006. Remiantis literatūros ir natūrinių tyrimų rezultatų analize, nustatyta, kad hidromazgų taurų gelžbetoninės konstrukcijos labiausiai ardomos dėl ledo poveikio. Detalesniam tyrinėjimui parinkti 6 hidromazgų taurai, kurių pažaidos leidžia teigti, kad taurų paviršinis betoninis sluoksnis buvo suardytas veikiant ledo apkrovoms. Darbe ledo poveikis analizuotas vertinant: 1) judančiųjų ledo laukų poveikio jėgą atskirai stovinčiai atramai; 2) sustojusiojo ledo lauko, atsirėmusio į statinį ir veikiamo tėkmės ir vėjo, poveikio jėgą; 3) jėgą, susidarančią atramai prarėžiant ledokamšą; 4) jėgą susidarančią dėl ledokamšos atsirėmimo į statinį statmenai jo frontui; 5) jėgą, kuria atrama pjauna ledogrūdą. Nustatyta, kad tvenkinių ledo apkrovos labiausiai priklauso nuo tauro pločio – didėjant tauro pločiui bendruoju atveju ir ledo apkrovos didėja. / Technical state of hydroschemes, durability leads to them acting and the effects of load resulting from operation of weather conditions, aggressive environment, and other various factors. The aim of this work - to evaluate ice loads formed in the ponds of Lithuania and their impact on the reinforced concrete piers structures. The state of 10 reinforced concrete structures were evaluated by field investigations in accordance with STR.1.12.03: 2006 during the scientific expeditions in 2007 - 2010. On the basis of literature analysis and field investigations it was found that piers in hydroschemes suffer most from the ice impacts. More detailed investigation were selected 6 hydroschemes, in witcth were noticed the deterioration and it is posssibillity of concrete covering layer breaking due the impacts of ice loads. The ice loads were analyzed in this work: 1) the force of moving ice fields in contact with single pier; 2) the force of standing ice field, in the impact due wind and water drag forces; 3) the force from ice jam cutting by pier; 4) the force of ice jam in the perpendicular contact with stucture front, 5) the force, which is cutting support of the ice plug. It was found that the pond ice load is dependent on ice thickness - increases the overall thickness of the ice and the ice load increases. 5) the force from breakup jam cutting by pier.

Feasible span-to-depth ratios for many modern bridge systems have been identified and documented in literature. No such parameters have been adequately identified in terms of proportioning bridge piers. This thesis includes a study of 22 existing reinforced concrete highway bridges and their respective pier systems to determine the state-of-the-art in design. The effect of different geometric and material parameters such as concrete strength, reinforcement ratio and slenderness ratio on the structural behavior of individual piers and multiple pier systems was examined. Approximate methods, which may be used for the purposes of preliminary design are discussed and reviewed. Serviceability and ultimate limit states design aids that can be used to identify appropriate preliminary cross-sectional pier dimensions and reinforcement ratios for individual piers given various slenderness ratios were developed. The structural behavior as well as an approach to the preliminary design of multiple pier bridge systems is presented.
