Susceptibility of indigenous aquatic plants to alien invasives : competitive interactions as influenced by nutrient levels and density

MSc., Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, 2011 / This research investigated the susceptibility of South African indigenous aquatic plants to competition from invasive species, using the competitive interactions of two sets of aquatic plants as a potential indicator. These interactions were studied in two separate experiments: the submersed weeds, Hydrilla verticillata (L.F.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) and an indigenous species, Lagarosiphon major (Ridley) Moss (Hydrocharitaceae) and; the floating weeds, Azolla filiculoides Lamarck (Azollaceae) and the indigenous Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid (Lemnaceae). Plants were grown under differing nutrient levels, and in an addition series of eight different densities, using the reciprocal yield model to estimate competitive ability. The invasive Hydrilla outcompeted Lagarosiphon in terms of mean length, dry mass, and survival. Major algal infestation in the high nutrient level of the Hydrilla/Lagarosiphon experiment altered light and nutrient conditions, which may have played a significant role in the lack of establishment of Lagarosiphon and the poor growth performance of Hydrilla. The invasive Azolla and indigenous Spirodela both performed well in terms of plant mass and increase in number. While Azolla was affected by intraspecific competition, it showed a steady increase in growth and multiplication with an increase in nutrients. The individual mass of Spirodela plants was highest in the low nutrient level, and multiplication rates were greatest in the high nutrient level. Results indicate that the susceptibility of indigenous plants may be increased in highnutrient systems, and that a continuous monitoring programme of aquatic alien species is vital in protecting our indigenous plants from extinction. This research recommends that the method of investigating competitive interactions between alien and indigenous plants be repeated with a variety of aquatic plants, as a means of anticipating susceptibility to invasions.

A comparative study of the seed bank dynamics of two congeneric alien invasive species

Includes bibliographies. / The unique vegetation in the lowlands of the fynbos biome is threatened by alien Acacia encroachment. The seed bank dynamics of the two most widespread invaders in the region, Acacia saligma and A. cyclops, was studied to elucidate those factors contributing most to their invasive success. This information was then used to assist in developing optimal control methods. On the basis of information available prior to this study, it was predicted that both species would have large, persistent seed banks in the so.il, and that seed bank processes would provide the - key to invasive success: namely, high seed longevity and heat-stimulated germination. Seed banks were monitored for several years following clearing of the parent stand, using either sites sampled in an earlier study, or sites providing chronosequences of clearing dates. Concurrently, a demographic study of the species' seed banks, including processes from seed rain through to seedling emergence and survival, was done in dense Acacia stands and in fynbos vegetation. Acacia saligma seed banks conformed to predictions, being large and persistent owing to high percentage viability and water-impermeable dormancy. Seed banks accumulate rapidly under dense stands and are "disturbance-coupled" as they have potentially high longevity unless stimulated to germinate by fire. Although A. cyclops seed banks also may be large and long-lived, they display variable percentage viability and dormancy, with the majority of a seed cohort surviving less than a year. Acacia cyclops seed banks do not respond to heat treatment and appear to be "disturbance-uncoupled".

Development of soybean host plant resistance and other management options for the stem borer, Dectes texanus leconte

Michael Smith / Several studies were conducted to develop soybean management options that could provide protection from the soybean stem borer, Dectes texanus LeConte. Selected soybean genotypes were screened for host plant resistance against D. texanus. Soybean plants were grown in a footprint that could be covered by a field cage. When beetles were flying in the fields they were collected and placed in the field cages to increase the insect feeding pressure on the test plants. A susceptible commercial soybean variety treated with the systemic insecticide fipronil was used as a positive antibiosis check. Both commercial soybean varieties and plant introductions (PIs) obtained from the USDA National Soybean Germplasm Collection in maturity groups (MG) VI to VIII were tested over a four-year period. Since the number of ovipositions per plant could not be controlled, the ratio of oviposition punctures (OP’s) per live larvae (OP/ Lv) was used as a novel index of potential plant antibiosis to D. texanus. Field evaluations identified PI165673 as a genotype with a very high OP/ Lv ratio - similar to that for the fipronil antibiosis control. PI165673 appears to be potential source of resistance to D. texanus. Factorial analysis indicated that soybean maturity group was not significant factor in the expression of resistance. The OP/ Lv ratio appears to be more sensitive means of identifying antibiosis than other more conventional damage indices. The use of field cages demonstrated consistent plant responses from year to year during the multi-year study. Greenhouse-grown soybean plants, including transgenic plants containing the Manduca sexta chitinase gene, were not morphologically appropriate for successful D. texanus oviposition because the greenhouse-grown plants were poorly developed and had not produced enough pith in petioles. Therefore the greenhouse results were inconclusive. Analysis of the vertical distribution of D. texanus oviposition on soybean plants revealed that D. texanus oviposition was most likely to occur on leaf petioles on the upper five nodes of the plant canopy. Histomorphological observations of plant petioles indicated that the proportion of the petiole perimeter occupied by vascular bundles might be related to D. texanus oviposition. Both foliar and seed applications of fipronil suppressed D. texanus larval damage on soybean plants. The efficacy of these treatments was sustained for long periods, even until adult beetles were present in early August. The effects of the fipronil seed-treatment and harvest date on grain yield were both significant while the interaction was not. A physiological yield loss of 8.2% and plant lodging losses of 2.9% were associated with D. texanus infestation.

Niche Occupation in Biological Species Competition

Thesis (MSc (Logistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The primary question considered in this study is whether a small population of a biological species introduced into a resource-heterogeneous environment, where it competes for these resources with an already established native species, will be able to invade successfully. A two-component autonomous system of reaction-diffusion equations with spatially inhomogeneous Lotka-Volterra competitive reaction terms and diffusion coefficients is derived as the governing equations of the competitive scenario. The model parameters for which the introduced species is able to invade describe the realized niche of that species. A linear stability analysis is performed for the model in the case where the resource heterogeneity is represented by, and the diffusion coefficients are, two-toned functions. In the case where the native species is not directly affected by the resource heterogeneity, necessary and sufficient conditions for successful invasion are derived. In the case where the native species is directly affected by the resource heterogeneity only sufficient conditions for successful invasion are derived. The reaction-diffusion equations employed in the model are deterministic. However, in reality biological species are subject to stochastic population perturbations. It is argued that the ability of the invading species to recover from a population perturbation is correlated with the persistence of the species in the niche that it occupies. Hence, invasion time is used as a relative measure to quantify the rate at which a species’ population distribution recovers from perturbation. Moreover, finite difference and spectral difference methods are employed to solve the model scenarios numerically and to corroborate the results of the linear stability analysis. Finally, a case study is performed. The model is instantiated with parameters that represent two different cultivars of barley in a hypothetical environment characterized by spatially varying water availability and the sufficient conditions for successful invasion are verified for this hypothetical scenario.
