Leadership in Message Interpretation Networks

Taheri, Javad January 2012 (has links)
We study a message passing network where nodes keep a numeric attitude toward a subject. Messages are created by a message factory and each is sent to a random seed-node, which then gets eventually propagated in the network. Each message has some information about the subject, which is interpreted by the receiving node based on its features. Hence, the same message could be interpreted quite differently by two different nodes. Once a message is interpreted, the attitude of the node toward the subject is updated. In this setting, the thesis is that an external agent can influence (in a desired way) the average attitude of the network, by sending the messages to specific nodes (rather than sending them randomly) based on the message content. We call this agent a leader which its goal is to minimize (maximize) the average attitude of the network, and its actions are choosing one of the seed-nodes for a given message. The leader does not have any information about the nodes in advance, instead, it eventually learns the interests of the seed-nodes through sending messages and receiving the feedback of the network. We formulate this as a contextual bandit problem and study the effectiveness of a leader in different network configurations. Moreover, we study the case that there are two adversarial leaders, and present different policies and evaluate their effectiveness. Finally, we study the leader's performance when there are dynamic changes in the nodes features and network's topology.

The Differentiating Personal and Tactical Dimensions of Head Coaches in the NFL: Why is Bill Belichick Successful When Others Are Not?

Dixon, Patrick 01 January 2017 (has links)
Throughout the history of the NFL, several head coaches have found significantly more success than their peers. The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of what personal and tactical dimensions have set these coaches apart. This paper will study the most successful coaches of the past, as well as today’s most successful coach, Bill Belichick. Through case studies, this paper identifies possible explanation for Belichick’s current run of success in an NFL that grows more competitive each season. Specifically, this paper looks at the relationship between players and coaches, and how Leader- Member exchange plays a very important role in the success coaches will find. Leader- member exchange (LMX) has not been studied in the NFL, and this paper predicts that future research in this area will find the most important factors of LMX to be trust, respect, and predictability of actions. This paper also looks at the role of the head coach outside of his player relationships, and how vast football knowledge is not enough to lead an NFL team to success. Head coaches that are most successful differentiate themselves from others through the tactical side of the game, in many different aspects, including player acquisition, game preparation and tactics, personnel management and decision- making. Last, this paper examines the coaching career of Bill Belichick, and why he has found immense success in the NFL. Further research in the field of player-coach relationships would provide a clearer answer for successful coaches in the NFL.

POSITION CONCORDANT - HAPTIC MOUSE

Rastogi, Ravi 19 February 2009 (has links)
Haptic mice, computer mice modified to have a tactile display, have been developed to enable access to computer graphics by individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Although these haptic mice are potentially very helpful and have been frequently used by the research community, there are some fundamental problems with the mouse, limiting its acceptance. In this paper we have identified the problems and have suggested solutions using one haptic mouse, the VT Player. We found that our modified VT Player showed significant improvement both in terms of the odds of obtaining a correct responses and the time to perform the tasks.

Keclíková, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
Titel: The relationship of chosen factors between the game performance and the length of an active action of women handball players Objectives: We have determined two purposes. The first goal was to detect the composition of players according to the career's lenght during the period 2000-2010, then we were interested in composition of players in teams which had regularly participated on every championships during the same period. The second one was to find out the influence of the cereer's lenght of regularly participating teams on chosen coefficinets of game performance. Methods: We used quantitative colection/summary which can be found on websides of each championship as a source. The lenght of career is defined by the repetitive number of starts. We used the corelation method to determine the influence of career's lenght on the chosen coefficinets of game performance. All the informations are prepared in Microsoft Excel and the results are transfered into graphs and numbers. Results: In our project we found out that women players are participating most often on 1 or 2 championships. The career's leght has only tiny influence on two coefficients of game performance. Specifically it was the number of catched balls and also the number of dropped balls. We found out little differences by analysing...

Vybrané otázky týkající se statusu profesionálního sportovce / Selected issues of status of a professional athlete

Pospíšil, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
v anglickém jazyce (abstract in English) This thesis discusses the very topical issue of the status of professional athletes. The answer to the question whether the exercise of a professional sporting activity falls within the definition of dependent work in accordance with the Labor Code is currently still unresolved. Although there are strong arguments in favor of the subordination of at least part of the legal relations in professional sports under the labor legislation, the current situation is exactly the opposite. The vast majority of athletes today carry out their activities as self-employed persons. In this respect, the practice in the Czech Republic differs from the majority of other, not only European, countries where athletes normally have the status of an employee and possess the corresponding rights. This practice was recently explicitly allowed by the Supreme Administrative Court, stating that despite all the similarities, such activity is so specific that it defies the notion of dependent work. Czech law does not currently include any regulation of this issue, whilst it is evident that the current wording of the Labor Code is in fact inapplicable to the specific relationships in professional sports. It is therefore no wonder that the Czech sport clubs take advantage of the option not...

Title: Retrospective evaluation of results Wingate test in their junior national U18 Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to compare condition levels according to the Wingate test and game results achieved in individual MSJ U18 and determine the degree of functional dependence Wingate anaerobic test parameters according to the U18 category, with a later application of the elite players in the world competitions. Methods: In this thesis has been used retrospective collection of quantitative data from sources ČSLH. Evaluation data were gathered using a correlation relationships of speed and power variables and placement classes at MSJ, respectively. achieved level of competition. The comparison of speed and power variables between years was used analysis of variance with repeated measurements. Results: It was found that the velocity-force characteristics ice hockey player found Wingate test does not have a statistically significant effect on the location of MSJ year and only low statistical significance was found between the variable ANC/kg and the level of competition achieved by the player. The difference between years in speed and power characteristics were not reported. Keywords: ice hockey, condition, player, forward, defender, Wingate test.

Title: Comparison of body composition of soccer players according to their players' post Objectives: The main objective of this work is to determine the body composition of soccer players according to their post and to compare these data with the results of similar testing taken in foreign countries. Methods: 45 players participated in the testing in total. The machine of bioelectrical impedance BIA 2000 M was used for the detection of the body composition and the gained data were further proceeded in the programme NUTRI 4. The observed parameters were a percentage of body fat, an absolute amount of fat mass, fat-free and intracellular tissue. For the process of the statistic data (arithmetic average, BMI, standard deviation, tables and graphs) the programme Microsoft Excel 2007 was used. Results: The players of both Czech clubs have a typical body composition for top athletes. It was found out that the goalkeepers have the highest percentage of body fat out of all measured players.
