An investigation into performance related musculoskeletal disorders of professional orchestral string musicians in South AfricaHohls, Quinton Rolf January 2010 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the
requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology:
Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, 2010. / Background:
Professional orchestral string musicians are exposed to many physical and psychological stressors due to demands placed on them from playing their instruments. The prevalence of performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD’s) in this highly skilled group of individuals has been investigated internationally, consistently showing a high injury rate. There is however, a paucity of literature documenting the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in South African professional orchestral string players.
It is hypothesized that South African trained orchestral string musicians may be at a greater risk for PRMD development due to the unique training and performance environments encountered in this country.
Objectives:
This study aimed to determine the demographic and injury profile; prevalence rate of current injury and risk factors for musculoskeletal injury in South African professional orchestral string musicians.
Method:
The study utilized a self administered quantitative questionnaire distributed to all string players in the three professional orchestras in South African in a semi-supervised fashion. SPSS version 15.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA) was used to analyze the data. A p value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

Results:
There were 27 respondents, with the average participant being a Caucasian, right handed, non-smoking female, 37.11 years of age, 1.5631 meters tall, with a weight of 62.96 kilograms (BMI = 25.768) who exercised regularly (primarily in the gym). A bachelors degree in Music was the most commonly awarded qualification, obtained between the years 2000 and 2009, from a University outside of the Republic of South Africa.
The prevalence of PRMD’s in the sample was 63% (n = 17), with a 95% confidence interval of 42.4% to 80.6%.In this study there was a high rate of injury (6.53 PRMD’s per player over a 12 month period), equating to 111 reported injuries in a population of 27 string players. The upper back (defined as the area between the shoulder blades) was the most commonly injured part of the body (77.8%, n = 21), followed by the upper extremity, mainly the shoulder (70.4%, n = 19).
No statistically significant relationships were found in determining and confirming expected risk factors in the string players.
Conclusion:
Professional orchestral string musicians in South Africa suffer from a high rate of injury which is comparable to international studies of the same nature

Karaktärsskapandets potential och begränsningar / Character Creation; a Potential and LimitationsPettersson, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
This project report describes a supplement for character creation in a tabletop role-playing game “Dragons and Demons." The purpose of this project is to improve the character creation for the players’ trough the narrative elements such as character’s background story. The applied qualitative methods such as a test panel and a questionnaire were conducted for the evaluation of theories used during character creation and to get feedback on the supplement’s creative value for the players. The aim of the questionnaire was to see how the method for the character creation differs from the regular way of making a character for a tabletop role-playing game and if this idea improves user experience during the tabletop role-playing game. The results of the evaluation are based on answers from novice and experienced players, and conclude that the additional background story creates an insight into the character's past, which makes it easier for novice players to get quick started with character creation. The experienced players expressed that the supplement for character creation was more entertaining than the traditional way of making a character for a tabletop role-playing game.

Sport psychological skills that distinguish between u/19 club rugby players of different participation levels and positional groups / Michelle Andrew.Andrew, Michelle January 2006 (has links)
Sport psychological skills play an important role in sport performance. Evidence further suggests
that the psychological skill levels may be influenced by the particular playing position. One
hundred and eighty u/19 rugby players from the PUK Rugby Institute (average age: 18.79 +- 0.28 years) were tested during the 2003-2005 rugby seasons by means of the Competitive State Anxiety
Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), Psychological Skills Inventory (PSI), Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28
(ACSI-28), as well as a questionnaire dealing with psychosocial factors influencing participation
and performance in rugby. Players from the 2004 and 2005 seasons (n=120) were first divided into
two groups (top- and lower ranked players) of 60 players each. Effect size results (practical
significance) revealed moderately significant differences between the two groups, with the top
ranked players outscoring their lower ranked counterparts in self-confidence, general coping
resources, coping with adversity, average psychological skills score, as well as the effect of team
members/team spirit, coaches and financial aspects on participation and performance. These results
confirm that sport psychological skill levels and related psychosocial factors can distinguish
between rugby union players of different participation levels. Secondly, the total subject group
(n=180) was divided into seven positional groups (props, hookers, locks, loose trio, half-backs,
centres and back three). These groups were compared by means of effect sizes (practical
significance) for each of seven sport psychological skills as measured with the PSI. Moderate (46)
and large (20) practically significant differences were reported for the 147 inter-positional
comparisons. The results show that the half-backs and hookers consistently outperformed the other
three positional groups, while the props, locks and back three often showed the lowest skill levels.
While these results are discussed in reference to practical implications for future position specific
sport psychological skills training sessions, they clearly show that sport psychological skill levels
differ from one position to another. / Thesis (M.Sc. (Human Movement Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.
