Ao longo das quatro partes que o compõem, este estudo visa mostrar que a principal tendência teórica de tradução poética deste século - a da lingüística estruturalista - da qual o modelo de Paes é uma manifestação, funda-se num certo ideal de traduzibilidade que guarda a noção de universal (significado) e particular (línguas franqueadas no processo de tradução) como pólos fixos e antagônicos, configurando desse modo, a tradução como uma atividade de caráter reflexivo ou refletidor de um sentido transcendental que se reproduz nas línguas, a despeito de suas idiossincrasias lingüísticas e- culturais. Tal conceito de tradução segue o princípio da dissociação de uma unidade originária de dimensão uniyersal; unidade essa que, em se tratando de tradução de poesia, recebe convencionalmente o nome de poeticidade. O objetivo desta reflexão de postura pósestruturalista em tomo da matemática. da tradução poética de Paes é argumentar que, exatamente por constituir-se- no ponto "crítico" e "paroxístico" da tradução em geral, e não se deixar domesticar pelas teoriaS- para ela até o momento articuladas,a tradução dita poética deflagra uma complementariedade e interdependência entre o universal e o particular, o que a caracteriza como uma atividade antes construtora do que refletidora da convencionalmente chamada poeticidade. A partir desta reflexão, podemos concluir que a configuração "problemática" da tradução poética, questão central deste estudo, resulta de uma construção temporal e culturalmente constituída, sendo, portanto, redimensionável / Abstract: This paper, focused on lhe poetry transation model of the well known poet, essayist and translator José Paulo Paes uma matemática da tradução poética in Tradução: A ponte necessária, deals with one of the most polemical issues within lhe theoretical realm of translation for at least 200 years: the so called 'set of problems' of translation in general, related to the limíts and possíbility of translating poetry: This paper will show, along the four parts into which it is divided, that the main theoretical trend of translating poetry of this century, the one of the structuralíst linguistics of which the model of Paes is an exponent, is based upon a kind of ideal translatability that carries the idea of universality (meaníng) and particularity (languages used in the translation process) as fixed and antagonic poles, thus making translation a reflexive activity or an activity that reflects a transcendental meaning that is conveyed by languages, whatever their linguistic and cultural features. This concept of translation follows the principle of the dissociation of an original uníty of universal dimension; a unity that, as we are dealing with the translation of poetry, is conventionally known as: poeticity. The objetive of this poststructuralíst slance about the mathematics of the translation of poetry is to state that, precisely because it is lhe «critical" point of translation in general and because it cannot be tamed by the theories elaborated for it, the so called poetic translation sets forth a complementarity and interdependency between universality and particularity that defines it as an activity better constructive than reflective of the-conventionally defíned poeticity. Based on this premise, we may state that the «set of problems" of translating poetry that is lhe core issue of this paper comes from a construction temporally and culturally created and is, therefore, able to be reshaped. / Mestrado / Tradução / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada
