Embracing the other: Affect, self, and the stranger

January 2018 (has links)
In the year 2016, 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes. A third of these people are now refugees (UNHCR 2017). As these people seek refuge in other countries, the citizens of the host countries are pushing back with fear of the unknown. In this instance it does not matter to those who fear the other from what the refugees are escaping, nor what it took to get where they are now. An architectural movement is expanding beyond its traditional skills in order to empower those outside of the field to engage with the spatial environments. This opens up the possibility of giving those who have been classified as "other" a voice through a spatial construction. Architectural affect offers an opportunity to create a social commentary through architecture. These sensations are created through the unconscious adaptation of perspective, without the use of cultural symbols (Lavin 2011). In architecture, affect can be fostered with the participation of space and intensified with the interaction between one or more mediums. Through the examination of the experience of refugees who have encountered the fear of "otherness", this thesis looks to translate these memories into an architectural construction that will examine the concept of vocalization through affect and mitigate the fear felt by the host countries. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Clausewitz e a política: uma leitura de \'Da Guerra\' / Clausewitz and the politics: a reading of \'On War\'

Passos, Rodrigo Duarte Fernandes dos 25 April 2006 (has links)
This thesis aims to present a reading of Prussian general Carl von Clausewitzs book, On War. Such reading emphasizes the theorical consequences from the understanding that war is part of politics and suits the explanation of all political actions. This works bases on Bertrand de Jouvenels political action concept. It identifies war as a strong political action that involves strong feelings and passions and a changing nature of reality. The present text aims also to explain the meaning of logic and grammar of war, a Clausewitzs idea that was not well explained. Taking into account that the logic of war belongs to politics and this one guides the conduct of war in its especifical manifestations, the author seeks to show how war and politics have several points in common. This can be observed mainly in strong political actions, such as revolutions. Lastly, it deals with grammar of war, concerned to differences with politics. These differences point to elements that are identified with violence, an issue that is not always present in all political actions

Reconsidering utopia: the political subject and political-ethical action in Simone de Beauvoir's philosophy and fiction

Wood, Benjamin Andrew 12 September 2011 (has links)
In her philosophical writings, Simone de Beauvoir argues our existence is defined by an inability to possess an objective understanding of our being. This fundamental ambiguity turns us towards a process of having-to-be – a series of attempts to define who we wish to become and the world we wish to establish. Through a reading of Beauvoir's novel, The Mandarins, I produce an outline of the political subject and a philosophy of political- ethical action that properly navigates this ambiguity. By committing to utopian political projects that aim at universalizing the conditions for collective self-emancipation, the political subject engages in political-ethical action that is a total manifestation of having- to-be at the same time as being.
