Stakeholders' experiences and perceptions of air pollution in a school environment.

Fray, Patrick Godfrey 20 August 2008 (has links)
The levels and sources of air pollution in the school community of Reiger Park, Boksburg is high and serious. This small township on the eastern outskirts of the Ekhurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality experience pollution problems that are very specific: (1) smoke from coal burning stoves and refuse burning; and (2) dust from abandoned mines or slime dams. The question of sustainable development is now on the international and national policy agendas. The concepts of ‘sustainable development’ and ‘sustainable human settlement’ have strongly emerged as priority concerns globally. Reiger Park, like many settlements in South Africa, encounters acute sustainable development problems. Indeed, the challenge of sustainable development is a national concern and priority in South Africa. Reiger Park shares characteristics of the broader developing world. Reiger Park, like many townships and communities in South Africa depends on the use of firewood and coal for cooking and heating purposes. This is problematic, releasing large amounts of smoke and carbon dioxide, which in turn pollutes the air. The pollution has widespread effects on the population, including learners within schools. This study’s main foci – education and clean air – reveals the typically degrading impact of poor quality air pollution on the education environment, posing serious threats to sustainable development of the poorer communities. Many households in the school community of Reiger Park make use of coal burning stoves for cooking and for keeping warm during the winter months. The coal that is burnt in the community, especially during winter months, releases gases into the atmosphere, which are harmful to the community. Other sources responsible for polluting Reiger Park, other than smoke from chimneys of houses, include dust from the nearby gold mine dumps, and open veldt fires and exhaust pipe emissions from automobiles. The authorities have found it difficult to control or eliminate these aspects of air pollution in the Reiger Park area. Educators were in agreement that, in the event of dust storms, classrooms are used as shelter from dust particles. Teachers and learners generally find the pollution problem in the community unbearable / Prof. H.G.van Rooyen

Application des systèmes MM5-CHIMERE et MM5-FLEXPART à la modélisation de l'ozone et des PM10 sur la région Nord-Pas-de-Calais / Application of the MM5-CHIMERE and MM5-FLEXPART systems to the ozone and PM10 modelling over the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region

Terrenoire, Étienne 26 June 2009 (has links)
Air pollution is a topical subject affecting both human health and the environment. Nowadays, two kind of pollution have been intensely studied, namely, the ozone and the particulate (PMIO, PM2.5 and PM1) pollution. During the thesis, the MM5-CHIMERE and the MM5-FLEXPART systems have been set up and optimised at the PC2A laboratory in order to study ozone and PM 10 pollution events. The performance of the MM5-CHIIMERE system has been evaluated for different topography and meteorological situations. Firstly, the modelled data are compared against observed data from the Atmo-NPDC air pollution monitoring network over the June-Ju!y 2006 heat wave period. Then, the dynamical and chemical performance of the models is assessed over the Dunkerque area for two periods in April and May 2006. For those two periods, measured data were collected during a field campaign achieved by the Laboratoire de Physicochimie Atmosphérique (LPCA) of the University du Littoral Côte d'Opale (ULCO). Finally, the MM5-FLEXPART system was used to determine the origin of an intense PM10 event over the NPDC region. The influence of anthropogenic primary emission, grid and meteorological data resolution has also becn tested.

Effects of pollution by copper and zinc upon some functions of marine and freshwater fish

Ismail, Patimah January 1984 (has links)
A study was undertaken in which both freshwater and marine fish were chosen as indicator organisms to monitor pollution by heavy metals (copper and zinc). Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of guppies to various salt concentrations. Juvenile and adults guppies were subjected to both abrupt and gradual changes from freshwater to various salinities. Both could tolerate gradual transfer from freshwater (S=< 1%, ) to 30%. salinity, but mortality did occur when they were transferred directly to different salinities. Juvenile guppies are more sensitive to copper and zinc than the adults. The survival rate was found to be increased with increase in salinity; the LC50 for both adalt and juvenile guppies increases with increasing salinity. The same results were found in a marine goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. The effect of heavy metals were also examined on the rate of oxygen consumption in both guppies and sticklebacks. Adding copper to the zinc solution used lowars the rate of oxygen consumption in sticklebacks but gives a range of values for the rate of oxygen uptake in guppies. Generally, increasing the zinc concentration decreases the oxygen consumption in both species. Plaice and dab were found to accumulate copper and zinc unevenly in different organs. Liver accumulated the highest concentration of accumulated zinc for both dab and plaice. In the eight species of fish examined, the liver displayed the highest concentration of zinc by comparison with the gills and muscles.
