Texas Timber-Frame Porch

Senning Jr, Daniel A. 11 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis project is an investigation of both heavy timber construction and a means to create a retreat away from the chaos of modern life. This culminated in a porch outside of downtown Austin, Texas. The program began with an entrance foyer, kitchen, wine cellar, a humidor, a library, a bar, a locker room, restrooms, and storage. The form became a long, gradually curving hallway responding to the shape of the island. Rooms expand off of the hallway at both the beginning and the end. A heavy timber truss was designed so that it could be adapted to accommodate expansion for rooms, site constraints, and programmatic needs. Special attention was paid to the details of the retreat such as the connections needed to assemble the heavy timber truss and the handrails. The project conveys a strong connection with the site it is situated on. / Master of Architecture

Motion and Emotion, Urban Dwelling in New Orleans

Keeney, Benjamin S. 19 October 2006 (has links)
This thesis brings forth the regional architecture of New Orleans, Louisiana, and applies it directly towards the reconstruction and reconstitution of the Lafitte Housing Project closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina in late August 2005. The half-mile long Lafitte Housing Project rests just outside the French Quarter in the Sixth Ward. This thesis proposes reopening the canal along Jefferson Davis Parkway and extending it into the French Quarter to the southern edge of Louis Armstrong Park. As many of the former apartments were damaged by flooding from Hurricane Katrina, some units will be demolished to make way for site changes. A problematic condition of the former public housing complex was the way that it stood within the site as a massive homogenous entity, far out of scale to the surrounding urban fabric. The solution to rebuilding the site is not to construct another massive housing community. Rather, this proposal would include restoring many of the existing units, providing a historic anchor to the new neighborhood, and allowing them to remain along with new construction. Earth removed from the canal will stay on the site and be used to construct a half-mile long mound, running most of the length of the projects. This mounded area will feature spaces for recreational activities, Marti Gras celebrations, relaxation, and it will allow bridged access to the second floors of the new buildings. More important than what the mound does, is what it is: a metaphor for rising up from the mud and water and towards an elevated way of living, for inhabitants of the new and old structures. The vehicle for the form and structure of the new dwelling units is the historic Foursquare house. A house that symbolizes aristocracy and well-being, these new units are a refinement of the two bedroom apartments in the existing public housing complex. In this proposal, both will coexist throughout the site. / Master of Architecture

Polyfunkční dům Veveří v Brně, urbanisticko-architektonická studie / Polyfunctional house at Brno Veveri - Urbanistic-architectonic study

Mezei, Peter January 2018 (has links)
Following the surrounding local urban structure I have designed the block structure of buildings. One of the blocks were chosen for polyfunctional building that include mix of urban dwellings – shopping floor in ground floor and offices in the second floor. These functions are supplemented by three floors of rent apartments, senior living and apartments in public ownership. The central part of building is courtyard surrounded by porch, terraces and balconies.

The considered study is divided in two topics, being the first, the plan grills consideration (interaction plate/ beam) in the analysis of buildings floors to determine efforts and displacement, in comparison with the traditional teaching that considerate the elements in a isolated form, with the beams study through the theory of plates. The second topic refers to the porch plan consideration (interaction beam / pillar) for the lateral wind action consideration on buildings structures, and its efforts and displacements in order to analyze the instability parameter and the increase coefficient of the vertical actions z, provided by NBR 6118:2003. Thus, this study presents, in a didactic form, how the using of such tools can contribute to a civil engineer graduation regarding concrete structures, indicating through some examples, a variety of details and concepts that can be obtained through these tools. Finally, it is shown also that, to conduct checks according to the recent regulatory requirements, makes essential the use of computational tools, instead of manual methods.

Ratto, Jean-Bernard 29 January 2014 (has links)
The Landes currently corresponding to the diocese of Aire and Dax, is formed by the combination of the former dioceses of Aire and Dax plus those portions of Auch, Bazas and Bordeaux. Religious buildings of this department are strengthened during the period from the beginning of the Anglo-French conflict in the late thirteenth century, and during the Hundred Years War, and for some, until the mid-sixteenth century. The vast majority of them are small churches for the defense of the village population in a region marked by the relative scarcity of castles. They are fortified so sometimes very elaborate and often very brief. They are particularly affected during the Wars of Religion, during which they are almost all looted, burned and destroyed often in their vault. Their inventory in this department consists of more than seventy-five churches. Sixty-eight of them are subject to detailed instructions, with plan, historical, architectural description, photos, statements, description and analysis of fortifications. Other religious buildings in the Landes, and some belonging to different departments, having a direct bearing on this subject are also mentioned. This research revealed the large amount and variety of fortified churches in this region and their different modes of defense. She also highlighted a particular and rare fortification consists of facades or semicircular porches built in the second half of the fifteenth century or early sixteenth century. The comparative study of these constructions semicircular facade for military use, with the churches against the apse, in liturgical use, still existing in the Landes and Aquitaine, was made to distinguish between the two types of buildings.
