Caracterização geoquímica e petrogenética dos granitóides Arroio Divisa, região de Quitéria, Rio Grande do Sul

Fontana, Eduardo January 2011 (has links)
The ArroioDivisaGranitoids (ADG), situated in the Quitéria region, eastern Sul-rio-grandense Shield, conform an elongate, NE-SW oriented body about 30 km long and 1 to 6 km wide. They are intrusive in Paleoproterozoic metatonalites, metagranodiorites, and tonalit-ic to dioritic gneisses at the northern border, whilst in the south they are intruded by Neopro-terozoic granites and rhyolites. The ADG rocks are predominantly foliated granodiorites to granites, with medium- to coarse-grained equigranular textures, containing amphibole and biotite. Titanite, zircon, and apatite are accessory minerals. Dioritic to tonalitic rocks occur as mafic microgranular enclaves, emulsions, and synplutonic dikes, with interpenetrated and sinuous contacts, as usual for magma mingling products. Near the diorites, the mafic contents of the granitoids is increased. Centimeter- to meter-sized xenoliths of gneisses and metato-nalites from the Arroio dos Ratos Complex, and of horblende-biotite granodiorites correlated to the Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite are frequently observed. Where mingling and large xeno-liths are abundant, the ADG granodiorites change their texture to heterogranular and porphy-ritic, in meter-wide zones. Magmatic foliation is marked by the shape orientation of plagio-clase and biotite. Parallel to the magmatic foliation, a mylonitic one is developed with varia-ble intensity and sinistral transcurrent movement. The steeply-dipping, ENE-striking struc-tures are rotated towards NE strike at the eastern part of the body, where a regional cataclastic zone has controlled the emplacement of later intrusions. Quartz-mylonites and phylonites are found within the ADG along high-strain, low-temperature zones, sometimes hundred-meters wide. The ADG and associated mafic rocks show geochemical features that indicate their me-dium to high-K tholeiitic affinity, also including crustal magmas produced by partial melting of garnet-bearing gneissic protoliths. These crustal melts yielded granitic liquids that contam-inated the dioritic parental magmas of ADG. The integrated interpretation of stratigraphic, tectonic and geochemical evidences indicates that the ADG and associated mafic rocks have formed during the early period of Neoproterozoic post-collisional magmatism in southern-most Brazil.

Development of optical imaging method for detecting RNA-protein interactions

Jung, Jeenah 07 January 2016 (has links)
The localization and translation of messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) play crucial roles in cellular function and diseases, and are regulated by numerous RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and small non-coding RNAs, called trans-acting factors. Biochemical and imaging methods used to study RNA interactions with these trans-acting elements have made important discoveries in characterizing how these factors regulate gene expression and determining the RNA sequence to which they bind. However, the spatiotemporal information regarding these interactions in subcellular compartments have been difficult to determine or to quantify accurately. To image and quantify native RNA and RNA–protein interactions simultaneously in situ, we developed a proximity ligation assay that combines peptide-modified RNA imaging probes. It can detect the RNAs in live cells and the interactions at a single-interaction level. Lastly, it can produce results that are easily quantifiable. We tested the specificity and sensitivity of this technique using two models: interactions between the genomic RNA and the N protein of human respiratory syncytial virus as well as those between exogenous transcripts with or without the Human antigen R (HuR) binding site and HuR. To validate this method, its accuracy and utility have been demonstrated in three models: poly(A)+ or β-actin mRNAs binding to different cytoskeleton for localization, poly(A)+ or β-actin mRNAs interacting with HuR for stabilization, and programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) mRNA binding to HuR or T-cell intracellular antigen (TIA1) for translational regulation.

Correlation between coping strategies and the levels of post traumatic stress disorder and depressive symptoms among sexually assaulted survivors in North West Province, South Africa / Nombulelo Veronica Zulwayo

Zulwayo, Nombulelo Veronica January 2013 (has links)
Sexual assault is a wide public health problem given the number of people who are sexually assaulted. Sexual assault affects the psychological well being of people who experience it.The most common reported psychological problems are PTSD and depressive symptoms especially after four to six weeks post sexual assault. These Co morbid disorders affect the normal functioning of an individual such home chores, work and increase mortality rate among sexual assaulted survivors. It was also documented that coping strategies (maladaptive or adaptive) employed by sexual assaulted survivors are the one that determine their recovery.Hence, there was a need to investigate the correlation between coping strategies, the level of PTSD and the level of depression in Ngaka Modiri Molema in the North West Province of South Africa. The study aimed to investigate correlation between coping strategies and the levels of PTSD and depression among sexual assaulted survivors. Correlational cross-sectional design was used in this study.Sample size of 115 of sexually assaulted participants between the age of 18 and 50 was determined through the use of Raosoft calculator. PCL for PTSD, BDI and brief COPE instruments were used to collect data. Information about socio demographic was also obtained.Data analysis was done through frequency distribution to describe the demographic data, levels of PTSD and depression.Data were also analysed through Pearson correlations to determine the possible relationship between coping, PTSD and depressive symptoms. ANOVA, chi-square, cross tabulation were also done to determine the possible relationship between demographic data, level of PTSD and depression. Results showed high level of PTSD and low level of depression among sexual assaulted survivors. They have also showed that there is no relationship between coping strategies and PTSD, and that there was a relationship between coping and depressive symptoms. These findings indicate that coping strategies cannot be regarded as one the factors that can control the non-development and development of PTSD, but could be regarded as one the factors that can account to development and non development of depression. / Thesis (M Cur) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2013

A theoretical exploration of the construction of counter myth : a case study of post apartheid South African film

Reid, Julie Barbara Jane 06 1900 (has links)
The primary aim of the study is to make a contribution to the discipline of myth theory, or mythology, within the academic field of enquiry of media studies. To this end, the first part of the study comprises a literature review of relevant myth theory, during which the quantitative disparity on myth theory, between myth literature describing dominant myth and that dealing with counter myth, is highlighted. In order to address the comparatively smaller amount of theory concerned with counter myth, the study proceeds to theorise the semiotic technical functions of counter myth, the socio-political functions of counter myth and examines the social values and dangers of counter myth in society. Furthermore, counter myth is considered with regard to media framing, the relationship between counter myth and political myth is addressed, and the characteristics and criteria of counter myth are outlined. In keeping with the main purpose of the study, which is to provide a new contribution to myth theory, the theoretical problematics of the definition and classification of both myth and counter myth is confronted, and mechanisms for contending with these theoretical difficulties are suggested. A theoretical framework for the analysis of myth and counter myth on film is developed, which is based on the theorisation of counter myth performed in the literature study. In the second part of the study this theoretical framework is applied to a sample of purposefully selected post apartheid South African history films as a case study. The primary purpose of this case study is to serve as a demonstration of how the theoretical framework for the analysis of myth and counter myth can be put to use in the critical analysis of media texts, in this study applied to film (as a mediated text). The secondary purpose of the case study is to examine a selection of post apartheid South African counter myths, which explicitly work to remythologise the collective social identity construction of the white South African, in the post 1994 socio-political environment. In this way, the study demonstrates how myth and counter myth may facilitate identity (re)construction during and after a period of societal upheaval or transformation. / Communication Science / (D. Gestion de la douleur de l'enfant en post-ambulatoire suite à une amygdalectomie

Vallée, Estelle January 2005 (has links)
Motives for substance use in the presence and absence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) : a research portfolio

Traynor, Isabel January 2012 (has links)
Background: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is frequently linked with substance use disorder (SUD). However, the nature of this association remains unclear. A clearer understanding of the dynamic associations between PTSD and SUD may shed light on the course of these two disorders thereby, identifying areas for intervention, which may potentially reduce some of the associated costly and harmful outcomes. Methods: Firstly, a systematic review was conducted to investigate the evidence base regarding the relationship between PTSD and SUD. Secondly, an empirical project was undertaken to explore functional associations between PTSD and SUD. This was achieved by comparing, motives for substance use, anxiety and depression symptoms, and SUD symptom severity amongst treatmentseeking adults with and without PTSD. Results: Results from the systematic review suggest that individuals with comorbid PTSD and SUD have more severe clinical profiles compared to individuals with a SUD alone. The results from the empirical study indicate that those with PTSD endorse coping-related motives for substance use significantly more than those without PTSD. Furthermore, those with PTSD had significantly elevated SUD severity ratings and higher anxiety and depression scores. Conclusions: Findings suggest that individuals with comorbid PTSD and SUD are motivated to use substances to cope with negative affect. The clinical implications of this are discussed.
