Dissertation (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of using a postmodern reading strategy
for Afrikaans poetry, in particular that type of poetry which, following Linda Hutcheon, I will call
historiographic metapoetry. The investigation consists of four phases. Firstly, in order to
implement Hutcheon's model, cognisance will be taken of the theory of postmodernism (chapters 1-
3), particularly with regard to poetry, since the latter is apparently a marginalised genre in this
theorisation. The second phase of the investigation encompasses a discussion of the discourse on postmodernism and poetry in America, the NetherlandsIFlanders and in Afrikaans (chapters 4-6,
respectively). Attention is given to matters such as the developmental history of postmodernism,
theorising on postmodern poetry and the practice of anthologising. The third phase bridges the gap
between research on postmodernism and that on historiographic metapoetry (chapter 7). The focus
will be on Pirow Bekker's poem "Apollo Smintheus", with specific attention being given to the
representation of the event (the journey of Jonas de la Guerre into the hinterland in 1664) in the
journal texts and other historiographic sources. Hutcheon's distinction between event and fact will
also be adopted in the analysis.
The last phase of this study is an application of Hutcheon's model to Wilma Stockenstrëm's poem,
Die heengaanrefrein, a self-reflexive text on the arrival of the Huguenots in South Africa in 1688
(chapters 8-12). As an introduction to the discussion of the text, the problematising of various
types of borders in the poem is examined. This is followed by an analysis of extracts from Die
heengaanrefrein with reference to four matters that are, according to Hutcheon, central to postmodern
theory and practice. These are: intertextuality, parody and the discourses of history; the
problem of reference; the subject and the representation of subjectivity; and lastly ideological
implications and political double-coding. The discussion of Die heengaanrefrein is supplemented
with shorter discussions of other texts, for example, George H. Weideman's "Kieselguhr-kleim",
two short poems from Breyten Breytenbach's Soos die so and P.J. Philander's poems "Die klippe
praat" and "Genesis". In Chapter 13, the final chapter, the findings are summarised and Hutcheon's
model is evaluated.
Hierdie sake is: intertekstualiteit,
beoordeel.

I'll be your mirror: reflections on doubling and the processing of aggression in the post(modern) fairy tales of Hesse & WintersonUnknown Date (has links)
Traditional fairy tales represent some of the oldest and most archetypal forms of literature. However, as humanity rapidly evolves, the genre and content of traditional fairy tales still operates as a prevalent socializing agent that fails to promote pluralism. Instead, traditional fairy tales illustrate and uphold limited gender roles and expectations. This paper examines Hermann Hesse's role as a pioneer in a now burgeoning movement of fairy tale revisions that blur boundaries between fantasy and reality by introducing specific, everyday locations, countries, and individuals coupled with a copious use of the double. This formula draws the reader into the tale via the uncanny and prompts a reevaluation of especially violent historical moments and issues that affect all within a society. Hesse's work within this new tradition of revisions of beloved fairy tales, as well as his creation of literary fairy tales, has significantly influenced the work of key postmodern feminist fairy tale revisionists like Jeanette Winterson. / by Brittany K. Charles Finney's The Circus of Dr. Lao: an epistemological fantasyUnknown Date (has links)
Charles Finney's The Circus of Dr. Lao, published in 1936, has been widely read in the last eighty years and has influenced significant authors in the field of fantasy, yet it has been examined in just three critical studies in that time. This study examines Finney's novel as an epistemological fantasy, a heretofore undefined term that precipitates an epistemological crisis of knowing and certainty. The novel opens a way for fantasy literature to establish itself in a Modernist landscape by foregrounding the marvelous and extraordinary knowledge that lies just outside the realm of human experience. Finney presents Dr. Lao's circus as a surrogate model of success, and while many of the characters in the novel are unable to accept the truth offered them by the beings of fantasy, the author uses their experiences to satirize the complacencies he witnessed upon returning to America from the Far East in the 1930s.

Terminus intractable and the literary subject : deconstructing the endgame in Chinese avant-garde fictionPayne, Christopher Neil January 2002 (has links)
The following paper will deal with the actantial place of memory and history in the works of Ge Fei, a so-called avant-garde writer in China. Analyzing his three major novels published in the nineteen-nineties, as well as an earlier short story, the paper will discuss how Ge Fei renegotiates the status and place of the literary subject as configured through the act of writing, and its close relationship with the medium of memory and history. Contrary to the prevailing opinion, the avant-garde experiment in Ge Fei's works does not intimate the dissipation of the subject, but rather assists in reconfiguring it in an entirely new and dynamic conceptualization. Instead of a figural e/End and vulgarization of literature in the nineties, Ge Fei's experimentation with the acts of writing and reading, as well as his play with language, open up new possibilities for the writing of new literatures in contemporary China.
