  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

The reduction of losses caused by insect pests is essential for increasing agricultural and forest productivity. Biological pest control uses natural enemies to reduce pest populations. Parasitoids are natural enemies that develop in hosts, causing them to death. Alternative hosts are used for mass rearing of parasitoids in the laboratory and the choice of suitable host is essential to increase the efficiency of parasitoids in biological control programs. The wasp Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) parasites species of agricultural and forestry importance. In this work, aspects of reproductive biology of this parasitoid were evaluated with the hosts Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). In the first chapter, the parasitism, emergence and reproductive parameters of P. elaeisis were compared between hosts. Both hosts were parasitized and promoted the emergence of the parasitoid. Individuals of P. elaeisis, emerged from T. molitor, were higher than those of D. hyalinata with lower life cycle. The size of the offspring, sex ratio and longevity of parasitoid adults were similar between hosts. In the second chapter, the ultrastructure of the female reproductive system and the development of P. elaeisis eggs reared in different hosts were evaluated. The anatomy of the reproductive system of this parasitoid was similar in adults raised in both hosts. The development of the parasitoid eggs was faster for females emerged from T. molitor, completely formed 24 hours after emergence. This work contributes to increase knowledge of P. elaeisis reproduction in alternative hosts for mass rearing and provides information on the eggs development, which help in production and release of this parasitoid in biological control programs.
