Čtenářské strategie jako podpora porozumění předčítanému textu u dětí předškolního věku / Reading strategies for preschool children which promote an understanding of text

Rybárová, Eva January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the study was to demonstrate that the reading strategies can be applied even for the preschool children. These strategies help children to understand the text read out aloud. In the theoretical part I am devoted to define the concept of pre-reading literacy, its connection with critical thinking and introducing the program Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking. I also clarified the relationship between reading skills and reading strategies, approached selected reading strategies and possible methods for their development. In conclusion of the theoretical part I outlined some of the strategies that might be suitable for working with preschool children. In the practical part I focused on the acquisition of individual strategies for preschool children, for the exact strategies: connecting (text to self, text to text, text to world), visualizing, predicting, reasoning, summarizing and questioning. Each of them I presented on concrete examples. I also proposed an integrated project involving work with these strategies, which I realized and then analysed. Based on the results of research, I have concluded that preschool children can work very well with these strategies, while indicating that these significantly contribute to the comprehension of the text of preschool children. Bysterská, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to show how important is the role of parents in the development of pre-literacy reading. In the theoretical part, I focused on the definition of reading literacy and pre-literacy reading and explanation the difference between them. I also described components and phases of the pre-literacy reading and possibilities of its development. I tried to emphasize the role played in the development by not only teachers, but also by parents, and to describe the methods which can enhance readership. Furthermore, I mentioned the types of reading strategies. In conclusion of the theoretical part I pointed out the influence which the reading has on the development of children's personality and what the research says about the role of parents. In the empirical part I analysed questionnaires filled out by parents from kindergarten with an effort to develop a typology of parents who do read to their children and who do not. Additional conversations helped me clarify what affects the reading of the parents has - it turned out that it is all about relationship to reading; parents who were in childhood read aloud, now they read to their children. Educated parents are more likely to accompany reading by other activities and rituals. In conclusion, I tried to figure out how can one lead...

Grade one teachers methods of teaching pre-reading skills to second language learners in an inner-city school

Morgan, Leanne January 2017 (has links)
Education is a fundamental precondition for progress and growth in South Africa (Spaull, 2011, p. 1). Literacy opens the doors to better livelihoods, improved health and expanded opportunity (UNESCO, 2011). Illiteracy is a serious constraint to improving education standards in South Africa. Prominent research studies stress the low levels of reading ability across the country. At the onset of Grade One, pre-reading skills are taught. Pre-reading skills are foundational skills and essential for later reading success. Teachers in English Second Language environments face the daunting challenge of teaching learners to read in a foreign language. This qualitative research study, which was conducted at a low-fee private school in Pretoria Central Business district, aimed to explore the methods that educators were using to teach second language English Learners (ESL) pre-reading skills. Data collected from semi-structured interviews, lesson observations and document analysis revealed that educators had a limited theoretical knowledge of pre-reading skills due to a lack of tertiary education and curriculum training. Numerous methods of teaching pre-reading skills were identified during pre-reading lesson observations. The synthetic phonics approach, multisensory teaching, using dramatization and subtractive bilingualism were methods of instruction used to develop phonemic awareness and English oral language competency. The study highlighted the numerous challenges faced by ESL teaching working in a low-socioeconomic environment and the ways in which the teachers overcame these challenges. Based on this study’s results, recommendations are provided to enhance the teaching of pre-reading skills to ESL learners. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Educational Psychology / MEd / Unrestricted

[en] DICTIONARY USE AND PRE-READING ACTIVITIES: PRACTICE, ANALYSIS AND REFLECTION IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM / [pt] O USO DO DICIONÁRIO E AS ATIVIDADES DE PRÉ-LEITURA: PRÁTICA E ANÁLISE EXPLORATÓRIAS EM SALA DE AULA DE LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA

BEATRIZ DOS SANTOS MACHADO 05 April 2004 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this study is to present the results of an etnographic research in the area of Applied Linguistics, which investigates, with the support of Exploratory Practice (Allwright & Bailey, 1991), issues related to the use of bilingual dictionaries and pre-reading activities in the acquisition of unknown vocabulary in a foreign language. The theoretical background for the analysis was based on Grabe & Stoller, 2002; Coracini, 1995; Carter & McCarthy, 1988; Kleiman, 1989 and Kato, 1985. The corpus includes English as a foreign language lessons in a class of seven basic level adult students from a big company in Rio de Janeiro. Four lessons with different reading activities and proposed by the teacherresearcher were recorded and trascribed. Questionnaires and interviews were answered by the students. The results of this research show that the bilingual dictionary is used and considered, by the students, in different ways in this context; the pre- reading activity is considered as an important complement in the language classroom, activating students´ linguistic and world knowledge, during the reading process. The teacher-researcher´s reflection about her pedagogic and discursive practice in the classroom led her to confirm and to reformulate some of her beliefs towards reading activities, as well as to identify other factors that influence her classes, such as students´ individual conceptions and their previous experiences in relation to the foreign language learning process.
