Sättningar i torvmaterialet : En fallstudie om användning av förstärkningsmetoden "förbelastning i form av överlast" på jordmaterial av torv / Settlement in peat material : -A case study regarding the usage of insurance methods “preloading in the form of overloads” on soil material of peat

Ali, Rebaz, Alshami, Ahmed January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of this degree project is to control the set-up for a longer period by means of the workplace at the use of the total station for then comparing calculated outcomes with real outcomes. Method: A combination of both quantitative and qualitative studies have been used in this degree project, consisting of literature studies and a case study including interviews, document analyzes, site visits and measurements. The case study is based on an ongoing project in the municipality of Nassjo, where a skate park is constructed and whose soil consists of peat. Preload in the form of overload has been applied. Findings: The result indicates the occurrence of a difference between calculated outcome and actual outcome regarding set rate and time course when using preload in the form of overload. The deviation is about 20 cm. Preload in the form of overload is a good method for peat land, but it is unlikely to be remarkably improved by vertical drainage. Implications: In view of the measurements produced by the authors, this shows that the method of loading in the form of overload on peat field works, however, gives the calculation model which has been used to be uncertain. The result described in more detail regarding vertical drainage on peat fields will not accelerate the process because the peat is already well drained. This means that it will cost extra without benefiting from the method. Limitations: The work has limited to two reinforcement methods on peat fields. A case study has been limited to only one area. There was preload in the form of overload, whose soil material consists of peat. Keywords: Peat, Permeability, Preloading in the form of overload, settlements, total station, vertical drainage, water quota.

Compréhension des mécanismes de (dé)lithiation et de dégradation d'électrodes de silicium pour accumulateur Li-ion et étude de facteurs influents / Understanding of (de)lithiation and degradation mechanisms of silicon electrodes used in Li-ion batteries and study of influent factors

Radvanyi, Etienne 06 February 2014 (has links)
The work presented here focuses on electrodes made of silicon, a promising material to replace graphite as an anode active material for Li-ion Batteries (LIBs). The first part of the manuscript is dedicated to the study of silicon (de)lithiation mechanisms by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). By using this technique of surface characterization, which allows investigating individual particles in their electrode environment, our results show that the first silicon lithiation occurs through a two-phase region mechanism cr-Si / a-Li3,1Si, whereas the following (de)lithiation steps are solid solution type process. Upon (de)alloying with lithium, silicon particles undergo huge volume variations leading to a quick capacity fading. By combining several techniques of characterization, the failure mechanisms of a silicon electrode are studied during aging. In particular, by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and mercury porosimetry analyses, an impressive dynamic upon cycling of the electrode porosity is shown. A model, which mainly attributes the capacity fading to the Solid Electrolyte Interphase instability at the silicon particles surface, is proposed. To try to stabilize this passivation layer and thus improve silicon electrodes electrochemical performances, the influence of two parameters is studied: the electrolyte and the “lithiation domain” of silicon; the latter is associated with the evolution of the active material composition upon cycling. Finally, by using these last results, promising performances are obtained for silicon electrode containing LIBs.

Limit state design for strengthening foundations of historic buildings using pretested drilled spiral piles with special reference to St. John’s Church in Tartu

Avellan, K. (Kari) 02 November 2011 (has links)
Abstract This thesis discusses strengthening foundations of historic buildings by means of pretested, end-jacked, steel piles; pretested, end-jacked drilled spiral steel piles, as well as the geotechnical and structural design of strip foundations using ultimate limit state methods. Strengthening the foundations of historic buildings is a field of engineering where every site is more or less different from another. The variation of the substructure, foundation, and soil circumstances make every case unique. Preserving heritage buildings by preventing structural decay requires know-how and suitable strengthening methods. Drilled spiral piles and jacked piles were employed as strengthening methods for St. John’s Church of Tartu, because of the sinking and uneven settlement of the building. The strengthening work at St. John’s Church was challenging due to the risk of collapse of this historic church. Underpinning with jacked piles is a preferred method for strengthening historic foundations and where drilled spiral piles were employed, the author of this thesis developed special equipment. The strengthening method employed for the tower complies with the anastylosis principle by preserving the authenticity of the structures. Old block stones are visible upon the floating piled rafts. The empty space was left to give archaeologists and engineers a chance to study the realized work “in situ” in the future. The foundation of the tower was underpinned step by step with end-jacked piles and a concrete raft poured step by step. The weight of the tower is 5 500 tons and it rests on four pillars. Every pillar rests on its own floating piled raft. This thesis proves that by means of lower and upper bound theorems a floating, piled strip-foundation can be designed geotechnically and structurally using one method based on ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS). The method takes the following into account as geotechnical requirements: total settlement and angular distortions; and as structural requirements; admissible plastic rotations, end moments due to displacement angle, as well as control of cracking. The chosen piling methods were suitable for St. John’s Church, and the installed piles work well in addition to the old foundations. The functionality of the strengthening techniques has been verified by test piling. Furthermore, every drilled spiral pile was preloaded twice and end-jacked for soil hardening. Jokaisella pilarilla on erillinen kelluva paalutettu laattaperustus. Spiraaliporapaalujen toiminnallisuus varmistettiin koepaaluilla. Maanlujittumista varten jokainen spiraaliporapaalu koestettiin kahdella esikuormituksella ja loppupuristuksilla.

Non-Parametric Clustering of Multivariate Count Data

Tekumalla, Lavanya Sita January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The focus of this thesis is models for non-parametric clustering of multivariate count data. While there has been significant work in Bayesian non-parametric modelling in the last decade, in the context of mixture models for real-valued data and some forms of discrete data such as multinomial-mixtures, there has been much less work on non-parametric clustering of Multi-variate Count Data. The main challenges in clustering multivariate counts include choosing a suitable multivariate distribution that adequately captures the properties of the data, for instance handling over-dispersed data or sparse multivariate data, at the same time leveraging the inherent dependency structure between dimensions and across instances to get meaningful clusters. As the first contribution, this thesis explores extensions to the Multivariate Poisson distribution, proposing efficient algorithms for non-parametric clustering of multivariate count data. While Poisson is the most popular distribution for count modelling, the Multivariate Poisson often leads to intractable inference and a suboptimal t of the data. To address this, we introduce a family of models based on the Sparse-Multivariate Poisson, that exploit the inherent sparsity in multivariate data, reducing the number of latent variables in the formulation of Multivariate Poisson leading to a better t and more efficient inference. We explore Dirichlet process mixture model extensions and temporal non-parametric extensions to models based on the Sparse Multivariate Poisson for practical use of Poisson based models for non-parametric clustering of multivariate counts in real-world applications. As a second contribution, this thesis addresses moving beyond the limitations of Poisson based models for non-parametric clustering, for instance in handling over dispersed data or data with negative correlations. We explore, for the first time, marginal independent inference techniques based on the Gaussian Copula for multivariate count data in the Dirichlet Process mixture model setting. This enables non-parametric clustering of multivariate counts without limiting assumptions that usually restrict the marginal to belong to a particular family, such as the Poisson or the negative-binomial. This inference technique can also work for mixed data (combination of counts, binary and continuous data) enabling Bayesian non-parametric modelling to be used for a wide variety of data types. As the third contribution, this thesis addresses modelling a wide range of more complex dependencies such as asymmetric and tail dependencies during non-parametric clustering of multivariate count data with Vine Copula based Dirichlet process mixtures. While vine copula inference has been well explored for continuous data, it is still a topic of active research for multivariate counts and mixed multivariate data. Inference for multivariate counts and mixed data is a hard problem owing to ties that arise with discrete marginal. An efficient marginal independent inference approach based on extended rank likelihood, based on recent work in the statistics literature, is proposed in this thesis, extending the use vines for multivariate counts and mixed data in practical clustering scenarios. This thesis also explores the novel systems application of Bulk Cache Preloading by analysing I/O traces though predictive models for temporal non-parametric clustering of multivariate count data. State of the art techniques in the caching domain are limited to exploiting short-range correlations in memory accesses at the milli-second granularity or smaller and cannot leverage long range correlations in traces. We explore for the first time, Bulk Cache Preloading, the process of pro-actively predicting data to load into cache, minutes or hours before the actual request from the application, by leveraging longer range correlation at the granularity of minutes or hours. This enables the development of machine learning techniques tailored for caching due to relaxed timing constraints. Our approach involves a data aggregation process, converting I/O traces into a temporal sequence of multivariate counts, that we analyse with the temporal non-parametric clustering models proposed in this thesis. While the focus of our thesis is models for non-parametric clustering for discrete data, particularly multivariate counts, we also hope our work on bulk cache preloading paves the way to more inter-disciplinary research for using data mining techniques in the systems domain. As an additional contribution, this thesis addresses multi-level non-parametric admixture modelling for discrete data in the form of grouped categorical data, such as document collections. Non-parametric clustering for topic modelling in document collections, where a document is as-associated with an unknown number of semantic themes or topics, is well explored with admixture models such as the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process. However, there exist scenarios, where a doc-ument requires being associated with themes at multiple levels, where each theme is itself an admixture over themes at the previous level, motivating the need for multilevel admixtures. Consider the example of non-parametric entity-topic modelling of simultaneously learning entities and topics from document collections. This can be realized by modelling a document as an admixture over entities while entities could themselves be modeled as admixtures over topics. We propose the nested Hierarchical Dirichlet Process to address this gap and apply a two level version of our model to automatically learn author entities and topics from research corpora.
