The formulation and evaluation of rapid release tablets manufactured from Artemisia Afra plant material.

Komperlla, Mahesh Kumar January 2004 (has links)

Infusions, decoctions, alcoholic preparations and other dosage forms of Artemisia afra are frequently used in South African traditional medicine. Generally when these preparations are made without applying good manufacturing practices they do not meet microbial quality control standards, safety and toxicity criteria and encourage poor patients compliance. To overcome the aforementioned disadvantages of traditional dosage forms a sold dosage form, i.e. a table might be recommended. The first objective of this study was to formulate and manufacture a rapid release tablet dosage of Artemisia afra that would contain an amount of plant material equivalent to that found in its traditional liquid dosage forms and that would meet conventional pharmaceutical standards. The second objective was to conduct a pilot study to obtain a preliminary profile of the bioavailability of select flavonoids presents in both the tablet and traditional liquid preparation of Artemisia afra in humans.

Prescriptions are often written in a way incomprehensible or lack important information, which can mean a serious risk to the health of the patient. The knowledge about adverse events may prevent errors because of illegibility, dosage and way of administration, duration of treatment, use of abbreviations and drug interactions. The possibility of errors in prescribing drugs increases as the professionals involved in the dispensation cannot read properly. In this study, we analyzed the profile of the types of medical errors and its prevalence, identified in a Community Pharmacy University, an institution of higher education in the city of Presidente Prudente (SP), where a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to evaluate 1220 written prescriptions. The analysis was based on predetermined criteria by the Brazilian legislation and WHO. It was identified an average of 1.81 medications per prescription. In all of the prescriptions analyzed security flaws were identified according to a screening technique used. The prescriptions were unreadable or barely legible in 32.4%. It was also found to lack information regarding the prescriber and the patient. The use of abbreviations was present in 94.5% and mandatory generic name for the drug in public health service was absent in 67.8%. The most frequently prescribed medications by Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification (ATC) were for the cardiovascular system and respiratory system 18.36% and 12.06% in the digestive and metabolic systems. In this study we evaluated the errors on the process of preparing the prescription and the prescriber's decision related to pharmacotherapy. Therefore, studies and strategies that contribute to improving the quality of medical prescriptions demonstrated to be relevant, in...
