Torsional Testing of Race, K3 and Profile Nickel Titanium Endodontic Files

Fessenden, Sean D 01 January 2004 (has links)
Rotary endodontic instruments have different cross sectional designs that may effect their resistance to torsional stress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the static torsional properties of two nickel titanium files that have recently been introduced for use in endodontics and compare them to the same size Profile instruments. Ten new files of each brand and size were tested. The files tested were: RaCe 25 tip 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 taper, K3 and Profile 25 and 40 tip in 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06 taper. The diameter of each file was measured at 3mm from tip. The last three millimeters of the working area of the file was grasped with a non-rotating stainless steel chuck and the handle was held in freely rotating chuck. Torque was applied with the Instron Universal Tester in a counter-clockwise direction to simulate the direction of torque encountered clinically. The crosshead speed was set to produce 2 rotations per minute until fracture occurred. The maximum torque achieved and the rotations to fracture were recorded. A multi-way ANOVA of rotations revealed that RaCe 25-0.02 exhibited significantly less rotations to fracture than Profile and K3 of the same size (p<0.0001). RaCe 25 tip exhibited lower maximum torque in all tapers than corresponding K3 and Profile instruments. The mean diameter was significantly smaller for the RaCe files. In this study the RaCe file series exhibited lower values for maximum torque and rotations to fracture. These results should be taken into account while using these files clinically, however further testing is indicated.

Lip Profile Preferences in Varying Sagittal Mandibular Positions

Coleman, Grant Gordon 01 January 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of sagittal mandibular position on preferred lip position in profile. Five androgynous silhouette profiles differing only in the degree of mandibular retro- or prognathism (-25º, -18º, -11º, -4º, & +3º facial contour angles) were created. Using a computer animation program, evaluators moved the lips independently into the position deemed to be the most esthetic for each profile. Evaluators included adolescent orthodontic patients, parents of patients, and orthodontists. In general, no differences in preferred lip position were found between the –11º & -4º profiles or between the –18º & +3º profiles, but preferences for each of the three profile groupings (-11º & -4º, -18º & +3º, and –25º) were different. No differences were found among the three evaluator groups or between male and female evaluators. Scattered and inconsistent differences were found among lip preferences for male and female profiles.

Etude de la réponse immunitaire innée au cours de l'infection à Orientia tsutsugamushi

Tantibhedhyangkul, Wiwit 03 July 2012 (has links)
Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative pathogen of scrub typhus, is a cytosolic bacterium that invades endothelium and monocytes/macrophages. So far, the knowledge of immune response to O. tsutsugamushi is still limited. The objective of this thesis is to better understand the response of human innate immune cells against this pathogen. We demonstrated that O. tsutsugamushi was able to replicate in human monocytes. Using whole genome microarrays, we showed that live O. tsutsugamushi induced robust changes in the transcriptional profiles of monocytes. First, type I interferons and interferon-stimulated genes were remarkably up-regulated. Second, infected monocytes expressed several inflammatory cytokine and chemokine genes, and were polarized toward the classically-activated M1 phenotype. Third, live bacteria induced interleukin-1β secretion and likely inflammasome and caspase-1 activation. We also showed that O. tsutsugamushi altered the expression of apoptosis-related genes and induced cell death in monocytes. We extended our work to the study of the transcriptional profiles of patients with scrub typhus and found a specific signature in patients that included the modulation of M1-associated genes and interferon-stimulated genes. We finally studied the response of human monocyte-derived macrophages to O. tsutsugamushi. The transcriptional and functional responses of macrophages to O. tsutsugamushi were roughly similar to those observed in circulating monocytes including type I IFN response, pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression and IL-1β secretion.

Individuální textový profil: korpusově založený výzkum idiolektu / The individual textual profile: a corpus-based study of idiolect

Leško, Marek January 2012 (has links)
- EN The thesis analyzes the idiolect of the then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in the specific speech situation of the televized debates on the background of the utterances of other candidates in the years 2000, 2004 and 2008. The analysis uses corpus-driven methods to compare the Obama corpus with the reference corpus. The comparison is largely based on the analysis of keywords and their use in context, supplemented by the discussion of their collocations and associated clusters. The results of the analysis, i.e. the principal features Obama's idiolect, are presented in a structured summary, divided into specific areas. Keywords: Idiolect, individual textual profile, Obama, keywords, corpus, corpus-driven

Three essays on self-esteem and retirement planning behaviors

Sages, Ronald Alan January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Sonya L. Britt / Maurice M. MacDonald / This dissertation, consisting of three studies, explores the influence of self-esteem upon retirement planning behaviors. Data for all three essays was obtained from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 cohort (NLSY79). A Theory of Self-Esteem (Cast & Burke, 2002) served as a theoretical framework for each study. The first essay examined the association between information search behaviors and retirement planning actions upon two dimensions of self-esteem, consisting of efficacy and worth. Both information search behaviors and retirement planning actions were found to be associated with both dimensions. Attained levels of education and the masculine gender were also found to be significantly associated with each self-esteem dimension. Essay two explored creditworthiness as part of the identity self-verification (Stryker, 1980) and self-esteem buffer mechanism, and its association with pre-retirement planning behaviors. Higher levels of self-esteem, attained level of education, net worth, and net income were all found to be associated with individuals who were likely to engage in one or more preretirement planning behavior. Creditworthy practices, however, were not found to be associated with pre-retirement planning behaviors in this study. Essay three postulated that respondents who possessed a composite psychosocial profile consisting of Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965), Pearlin’s mastery scale (Pearlin & Schooler, 1978), and Rotter’s locus of control scale (Rotter, 1966) would be associated with engaging in one or more retirement planning behavior. Results showed that a composite psychosocial profile is associated with individuals likely to engage in one or more retirement planning behaviors. Attained levels of education, net worth, net income, and age were found to be associated with individuals likely to engage in one or more retirement planning behaviors. Results of these three studies demonstrate that an association exists between self-esteem and retirement planning behaviors. This study offers the first exploration of A Theory of Self-Esteem (Cast & Burke, 2002) in a consumer finance context since the theory’s establishment ten years ago. These findings are important to academicians, financial planners, financial counselors, financial therapists, and policymakers in developing future research, strategies for financial success, and in the formulation of public policy to promote personal financial well-being.

Grieving in the digital age: using Facebook profile pages to maintain relationships with the deceased

Bouc, Amanda M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Communication Studies / Soo-Hye Han / Advancements in technology, particularly the introduction of online social networking sites, have expanded the modes available when handling the death of a loved one. This study examines how individuals use the Facebook profile pages of deceased persons to cope with loss and maintain relationships with them. An extensive content analysis of Facebook profiles of ten deceased individuals was conducted to investigate what the living discuss in their messages to the deceased in the semi-public setting of a Facebook profile page and if this content changes over the course of time. This analysis revealed that messages to the deceased reflect three themes: 1) processing the death, 2) remembering the deceased, and 3) maintaining the relationship. In addition to these dominant themes, the data also indicated that the content of messages shifted over time. Messages that contained the processing of death remained consistent over time, while posts that reflected remembrance of the deceased decreased, and messages that demonstrated relationship maintenance increased with time. This study utilizes the theoretical frameworks of continuing bonds and social information processing to draw implications of these findings. By examining the content written and how messages change over time, this study provides insight into how people cope with loss and maintain relationships with their deceased loved ones in the digital age.

Lipid profiles in wheat cultivars resistant and susceptible to tan spot and the effect of disease on the profiles

Kim, Dong Won January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Plant Pathology / William W. Bockus / The effects of tan spot on lipid profiles in wheat leaves were quantified by mass spectrometry. Inoculation with Pyrenophora tritici-repentis significantly reduced the amount of many lipids, including the major lipids monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), in leaves over time. These two lipids accounted for 89% of the mass spectral signal of detected lipids in wheat leaves. Reductions in amounts of lipids were at much higher rates over time for susceptible cultivars compared with resistant cultivars. Furthermore, data show that cultivars resistant to tan spot have different lipid profiles when compared with susceptible cultivars. Resistant cultivars had more MGDG and DGDG than susceptible ones, even in non-inoculated leaves. Using linear models that were fit to data, non-inoculated cultivars with a rating of 1 (highly resistant to tan spot) were calculated to have 66.1% more MGDG and 52.7% more DGDG signal than cultivars with a rating of 9 (highly susceptible). These latter findings are indirect evidence that the amounts of some lipids in wheat leaves may be determining factors in the resistance response of cultivars to tan spot.
