The Relationship Between Business Strategy and Project Strategy in Innovation Projects

Yousefi Zadeh, Hedieh, Wan, Mei Ching January 2008 (has links)

This report is a case study with the aim of examining the link between business strategy and the strategy of projects. The field of project management in strategy of projects and their link to the strategy of parent company has yet to be explored. The existing body of literature presents the alignment of project to strategy in two main views which are that projects should have a similar strategy with the parent or that projects should be independent in strategy and follow its own approach. Researchers acknowledge that the limited theoretical frameworks in this stream suffer from the lack of empirical research. Thus this research is based on the question “What is the relation between company’s business strategy and project’s strategy in innovation projects following the position driven alignment approach?” The researchers utilize the position-driven alignment framework as propositioned by Artto, Kujala, Dietrich and Martinsuo (2007). The factors of stakeholder complexity and project autonomy are examined to explore the relationship between the parent strategy and the project strategy. The study conducted is a single case study design on an IT Platform in a large insurance company. Analysis from the data reveal interesting results; that i) The obedience of the project creates risk on the parent strategy, ii) parent strategy changes as the project progresses and that iii) the perception of importance of the project by the parent influences the project autonomy. Further evidence through empirical research is suggested on the other project positions in this framework.

Eduardo de Almeida: reflexões sobre estratégias de projeto e ensino / Eduardo de Almeida: reflections on design strategies and teaching

Iwamizu, Cesar Shundi 15 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis covers the complete works of architect Eduardo Riesencampf de Almeida. For the first time, his sketches, study, execution and perspective drawings and photographs, were digitalized, organized and catalogued creating the first comprehensive analysis of his life\'s work. In addition to the graphic material, numerous interviews highlight his personal view of various projects, providing a reflection and deep analysis of the design process throughout his career. The work of Eduardo de Almeida spans more than fifty years. It may be categorized in phases aligned to the partnerships and sources of influence prevalent to each period. This subsequently revealed changes in expression and construction techniques according to the specific project needs. Despite these changes, it is possible to identify recurring design strategies that unify and characterize his work; even in projects with different use, scale and context. The analysis also reveals the relationship between the architect\'s design techniques and his teaching. As a respected professor, at the Sao Paulo University\'s Architectural School, his work is continuously referenced in new generations of architects\' works, embodied by his former students and coworkers. This still-unpublished material is intended to reveal Almeida\'s extensive architectural work to the general public. It should serve as reference for future studies about the architect as well as the Brazilian and Sao Paulo Modern Architecture.

Project strategy in the Swedish fiber infrastructure market: A private actor perspective : Navigating through the business environment competing for subsidies

Jespersson, Tim, Zetterberg, Hugo January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to fill the existing gap in the literature connected to project strategywithin the Swedish fiber infrastructure regarding the subsidy program announced by the Post- andTelecom Authority. To fulfill the purpose and address the research area two research questions have beendeveloped: RQ1: How do private companies design their project strategy competing for subsidies? RQ2:In what way does the business environment affect the design of the project strategy? Method: The study has used a qualitative research method based on a single private incumbent firmwithin the fiber infrastructure industry in Sweden. The study is based on existing literature on the subjectand complemented with 22 interviews divided into three stages to secure the quality of the data collection. The data were analyzed through a thematic analysis, which laid the foundation for the study's findings. Findings: The section presents four stages that intend to increase understanding of the subsidy program'sproject strategy and the business environment. The findings resulted in four parts, the Post- and TelecomAuthority subsidy program, the project in relation to the business environment, a life-cycle of the project, and lastly, a conceptual framework of the project strategy. The project strategy consists of sixcomponents: sub-goals, project organization and structure, risk, cost calculation, knowledge ofcompetition, and competitive tender. The strategy needs to include these components to create acompetitive tender and achieve the project goals and objectives. However, the competitive businessenvironment and Post- and Telecom Authority rules and regulations limit how the strategy can bedesigned and operationalized. Theoretical and practical implications: The study agrees with prior literature, which presents thatproject strategy is vital for project success (Shenhar et al., 2007), and that risk is a highly prominentcomponent affecting the strategy (Carbonara et al., 2015). However, the study presents new perspectiveson project strategy within public private partnerships on the Swedish fiber infrastructure and whichcomponents are the most prominent in the specific project. For managers, the study contributes with aframework intended to help assess these crucial components affecting the project strategy within theexisting context. This is to guide and assist managers in designing a more efficient project strategy andmitigates the risks associated with the subsidy program. Limitations and future research: This study is limited to investigating the project strategy related to thesubsidy program issued by the Swedish Post- and Telecom Authority. Further, the study is only based onone case company that does not present a holistic view of the project strategy of all actors involved. Thisindicating future research should investigate other companies within the market and especially publicfiber net owners with different goals and targets.
