Redesigning vacant lots as public open spaces can enrich the downtown environment both culturally and economically. This project is comprised of four sections. The third section will present a model of development of public open spaces for the city and will legitimize the necessity for revitalization. The last section will conclude the project. The goal of the project is to present critical aspects regarding existing vacant lots in downtown areas and to develop new types of public open space that can benefit the citizens and environment of Indianapolis, Indiana. The design new types of public open space that can benefit the citizens and environment of Indianapolis, Indiana. Defining interior architecture : necessitating academic and professional collaboration and creating collaborative social spaces within the university setting

Wood, Mary Elisabeth January 2005 (has links)
This thesis defines the discipline of Interior Architecture from an academic perspective, from a professional perspective, and through a series of case studies on various building types. The primary building type, which is studied in this thesis, is the university setting, with specific emphasis placed on the "social spaces" within the university, where people interact and collaboratively engage one another and the environment around them. Interior architecture is explored through a study of numerous design elements and psychological phenomena, including proxemics, control of one's environment, response to technology, location of social spaces, permanence versus flexibility, provision of spatial variety, public versus private realms, and multisensory perceptions of three-dimensional space. / Department of Architecture

Spaces for the soul : the role of public art in the creation of sustainable urban environments

Deane, Hope Lovelock January 2005 (has links)
This research project takes the form of a creative, reflective and analytic investigation 'through theory and practice' into the role of the artist in enabling 'sustainable' urban environments. My initial focus on a spatial public art practice?s potential contribution to social sustainability should be understood as involving the capacity to contribute lasting benefits toward social well being whether of the individual or the community. My research later challenges the efficacy of this focus and argues for a more holistic approach to sustainability which addresses social, environmental, cultural and economic concerns simultaneously.
