Puerto Nuevo was previously defined by García y Pinilla as a phase/style where there is an amalgam of Chavín and Cupisnique cultural elements with those of the south coast at the end of the Initial Period and the beginning of the Early Horizon. This paper presents new evidences and comparative stylistic analyses of contemporary societies that propose that it was during Puerto Nuevo times that the Paracas stylistic and religious tradition initiated, and therefore place it chronologically at the beginning of the Early Horizon. / Puerto Nuevo fue definido previamente por García y Pinilla como una fase/estilo donde se da la amalgama entre elementos culturales chavín y cupisnique con aquellos de la costa sur a fines del Periodo Inicial y comienzos del Horizonte Temprano. En este trabajo se presentan nuevas evidencias y análisis estilísticos comparativos de sociedades coetáneas que permiten proponer a Puerto Nuevo como la fase de inicio de la tradición Paracas y, por lo tanto, ubicarla cronológicamente a comienzos del Horizonte Temprano.

I Buenos Aires säger man att staden har vuxit fram med "la espalda al rio", med ryggen mot floden. Det betyder två saker, att Rio de la Plata är det som staden stödjer hela sin utveckling mot samt att man vänder ryggen bort från floden och in mot land. Buenos Aires har växt längre och längre bort från Rio de la Plata, idag ligger floden fågelvägen ca 2,3 km från stadsgränsen och den barriär som finns där imellan består till stor del av svårgenomtränglig infrastruktur. I mitt examensarbete undersöker jag hur man i den stora skalan kan förändra Buenos Airesbornas relation och tillgänglighet till vattnet och på samma gång lösa ett par av de stora problem som Buenos Aires brottas med. I den något mindre skalan har jag också undersökt vilka olika typer av specifika relationer Buenos Aires skulle kunna tänkas utveckla till Rio de la Plata.

In this article we present the results of the first season of excavations undertaken by the Paracas Archaeological Project at the Puerto Nuevo Archaeological Site. We focus on the stratigraphy and occupational history of the site, the radiocarbon dating ofthese occupations we have been able to identify this point, the pottery styles associated to these occupations, and the remains ofplants and animals consumed at the site. We finish with some ideas about the importance of our findings to the reconstructionof the long distance exchange networks of the first half of the first millennium B.C.E, and the role these networks played in the important political and economic changes that took place in the Central Andes during that time. / En este artículo, presentamos los resultados de la primera temporada de excavaciones del Proyecto de Investigaciones Arqueológicas Paracas, llevada a cabo en el sitio arqueológico de Puerto Nuevo. Nos concentramos en la estratigrafía e historia ocupacional delsitio, el fechado radiocarbónico de las ocupaciones definidas hasta el momento, los estilos de vasijas de cerámica asociada a dichas ocupaciones, y los restos de fauna y flora explotada y consumida en el sitio. Finalmente, terminaremos con algunas reflexiones yespeculaciones sobre la importancia de nuestros hallazgos en la reconstrucción de las redes de intercambio a larga distancia de laprimera mitad del primer milenio antes de nuestra era, y el rol que estas jugaron en los cambios políticos y económicos tan importantes que ocurrieron en los Andes Centrales durante este período.
