Temporal-mode interferometry: A technique for highly selective quantum pulse gating via cascaded frequency conversion in nonlinear optical waveguides

A new, and thus far only, method to overcome a selectivity barrier in parametrically pumped quantum pulse gates is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, using frequency conversion of optical temporal modes in second-order nonlinear waveguides. Temporal modes and quantum pulse gates are defined and their utilities are explored. Pulsed operation of three-field and four-field, parametric, optical processes are modeled and numerically investigated. A maximum limit to achievable selectivity for quantum pulse gating in uniform media is discovered and theoretically explained. An interferometric means of overcoming said limit and asymptotically approaching unit selectivity is proposed. The principle is experimentally verified by double-passing specifically shaped optical pulses derived from an ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser through a periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide phasematched for sum-frequency generation. Further improvements and future implications for quantum technologies are discussed.

M.Ing. (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) / Three single phase current fed converters operating in pwm mode, are combined as an active power filter of 15 kVA. The undesired limit cycle shown by the system is eliminated by feedback loop compensation. Analog, computer and analytical models which predict remarkably similar system responses are used to investigate the technique. The analytical model involves describing function methods. The losses in the converters are modelled, and used as a feedback reference to allow losses in the system to be accurately covered from the supply. The system behaves as an accurate, fast active filter for distortion in power networks. Results illustrating this include the time and frequency response of the system for different reference currents. This is shown for the computer simulation as well as the practical system. Some more results include the response of the system to both a balanced and an unbalanced set of references in the three phases. The last results shown, illustrate the ability of the system to compensate a non-linear load.

Effect of Photoacoustic Radar Chirp Parameters on Profilometric Information

Photoacoustic imaging for biomedical application has attracted much research in recent years. To date, most of the work has focused on pulsed photoacoustics. Recent developments have seen the implementation of a radar pulse compression methodology into continuous wave photoacoustic modality, however very little theory has been developed in support of this approach. In this thesis, the one-dimensional theory of radar photoacousticsfor pulse compressedlinear frequency modulated continuous sinusoidal laserphotoacoustics is developed.The effect of the chirp parameters on the corresponding photoacoustic signal is investigated, and guidelines for choosing the chirp parametersfor absorber profilometric detectionare given based on the developed theory and simulations. Simulated results are also compared to available experimental results and show a good agreement.

This thesis is concerned with the construction of a transistorized pulse code modulation decoder, the purpose of which is to decode the digital signal into the continuous analog form. The earlier part of this thesis describes the design and construction of a transistorized decoder using the circulated pulse principle. This turned out to be not too practical. The latter part concerns the design and construction of a PCM decoder using a ferrite-core shift register. This design was successful. Chirped-Pulse Fourier Transform Microwave Spectroscopy of Fluoroiodoacetonitrile and Chloropentafluoroacetone

This work focuses on finding the complete iodine and nitrogen nuclear electric quadrupole coupling tensors for fluoroiodoacetonitrile using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Fluoroiodoacetonitrile contains two hyperfine nuclei, iodine (I=5/2) and nitrogen (I=1) and the spectra were observed with great resolution. A total of 499 transitions were observed for this molecule. The a, b and c rotational constants were obtained. A study of chloropentafluoroacetone was also done using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The two chlorine isotopes for this molecule, Cl-35 and Cl-37 were observed and 326 and 170 transitions were recorded, respectively.

Improvement of the Physicochemical Attributes and Antioxidants Profiles from Pulse Seeds through Germination

Edible pulse seeds are good sources of food ingredients. Germination has been regarded as an effective process to further improve nutrient digestibility and accessibility of pulse seeds. Our aim was to observe the effect of germination on proximate composition, physicochemical attributes, and phenolic profiles of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Merr.), and yellow pea (Pisum sativum L.). In addition, mechanisms of how germination affects the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds were proposed. Chemical composition, thermal, pasting, and moisture adsorption properties of pulse flours were investigated over 6 days of germination. Protein contents increased by 3 percent points for all pulses over germination. However, lentil had the highest protein content. Lipid contents decreased over germination with chickpea having the greatest decline, from 8.00 to 5.90 g/100g (d.b.). Total starch decreased in lentil and yellow pea during germination. Thermal properties of pulse flours changed slightly, while pasting properties varied among pulses. The highest final viscosities for chickpea, lentil, and yellow pea flours were 1061, 981, and 1052 cP and were observed after 2, 1, and 0 days of germination, respectively. Moisture adsorption isotherms showed improved water adsorption capabilities after germination. Soluble free (SFPs) and polar soluble bound phenolic compounds (PSBPs) were extracted from germinated pulse seeds. Their antioxidant activities were evaluated using both the in vitro system and stripped soybean oil (SSO)-in-water emulsions. Liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and size-exclusion chromatography with multiangle-light-scattering and refractive-index detection were employed to analyze the phenolic composition and molar mass, respectively. Antioxidant activities of SFPs increased in both in vitro and SSO-in-water emulsion system, however, much lower than those of PSBPs based on SSO-in-water emulsion system. The effect of germination on PSBPs in SSO-in-water emulsion varied between pulses. By virtue of chemometric analysis, nine phenolic compounds were speculated as the pivotal phenolic compounds responsible for the antioxidant activity of PSBPs. In particular, the molar masses of PSBPs had a positive relationship with their antioxidant activity. Protective and co-antioxidative principles were proposed as reasons for the variability of antioxidant activities of PSBPs in oil-in-water emulsions with germination. / Hatch project number ND01593
