Mechanical Characterization of the Interspinous Ligament using Anisotropic Small Punch TestingBradshaw, Rachel Jane 07 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Objective: The objective of this work was to characterize the nonlinear anisotropic material constitutive response of the interspinous ligament (ISL).
Methods: Cadaveric test samples of the interspinous ligament were tested using the anisotropic small punch test. The measured force-displacement response served as experimental input into a system identification optimization routine to determine the constitutive material parameters that replicated the measured material response.
Results: The constitutive behavior of the ISL is notably different from that reported for knee, shoulder, and hip ligaments. Specifically, the high collagen fiber content and unique collagen architecture provided a stiffer material response. The results from the present work were compared with available data from the literature for the ISL and were found to be consistent with reported failure stress and strain to failure.
Conclusion: The ISL has unique constitutive properties and architecture that provide mechanical and clinical stability to the lumbar spine during flexion. The characterization data obtained during accomplishment of this thesis provide valuable insights into these roles. The present work provides a first step to fully characterize and understand both physiological and pathological motion of the spine. Further research is necessary to clarify the contributions of spinal ligaments to spine stability and how damage to spinal ligaments may contribute to chronic lower back pain.

The Last Laugh: Selected Edwardian Punch Cartoons of Edward Linley SambourneLarson, Alison 05 1900 (has links)
The illustrative work of Edward Linley Sambourne for Punch magazine during the period 1901-1910 addresses a myriad of political topics prevalent during the Edwardian period in British history. This thesis examines two of those topics - Women's Suffrage and Socialism - through their artistic treatment by one of Britain's most influential periodicals. Through a study of the historical context and iconography of selected cartoons-of-the-week, one is better equipped to understand and appreciate the meaning, message, and humor in the cartoons. Chapter 1 introduces the Sambourne, Punch magazine, and the Edwardian period in general. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss four Women's Suffrage cartoons and four Socialism cartoons respectively. Chapter 4 draws conclusions regarding Sambourne's techniques as a cartoonist as well as the relationship between the text and image in his illustrations.

Technologie výroby plechových klecí pro radiální soudečková ložiska / Technology of radial bearing steel cages productionJabůrek, Petr January 2008 (has links)
The project conceived within engineer’s studies of branch 2303T002 is subbmitting a proposal for radial bearing cage produce technology. It is also subbmitting a design solution to functional parts for blanking the “windows” and coining the “locks”. The cage will be made from sheet steel 11 300.29. This cage should replace the current one machined from the brass Ms 58 Al. According to the literary research and development experiences of the company ZKL Brno, a.s., two pairs of tools were designed. First one for blanking the “windows” and second one for coining the “locks”. Blanking punch, blanking die and coining punch will be made from the steel 19436, coining die will be made from the steel 19312. Heat-treating process will be accomplished according to the enclosed drawings. Both pairs of tools will be mounted in the press LENR 63 AU (manufactured by the company ŠMERAL Trnava), with nominal force 630 kN.

IBM mainframe : a study in business strategySlanda, Arkadiusz Marcin 13 August 2010 (has links)
On April 7, 2009, IBM celebrated the mainframe’s 45th year. Drawing on its roots in punch-card tabulators, the machine has come a long way to become many customers’ preferred e-business solution. Throughout its lifetime, IBM’s strategy adapted the machine to the changing market. During the late 1960s, the introduction of the System/360 provided customers with compatibility and scalability across various computer lines. Popularity of the system began to suffer during the client/server era of the 1990s but it quickly recovered as the z Series server line was developed to support e-business solutions. IBM’s strategy made the mainframe successful but continued improvements are still necessary to ensure its future success. / text

Caracterização do desgaste em punção de forjamento a quente em prensa horizontal automática de múltiplos estágios. / Characterization of hot forging punch wear used in multi-stage mechanical horizontal automatic press.Pereira, Marcio Henrique 10 April 2017 (has links)
Since the initial development, thousands of years ago, forging has faced continuous improvements, remaining as a modern manufacturing process, capable of adding important characteristics to forged products that are used in numerous applications. In the automotive industry, responsible for the consumption of approximately 60% of all forged products, the forging has proved to be an effective metal forming process in terms of mechanical strength specifications and productivity requirements. This demand for forged parts has stimulated the search for more robust processes in which the forging tool has a fundamental role to enable the production of larger batches without downtime due to failures. Approximately 70% of these failures are related to tool wear. This work aimed identifying, in an industrial environmental, the wear modes responsible for the degradation of the contact surface of a punch, made of H-10 steel. A series of punches was used for hot forging in a horizontal and automatic multi-stage eccentric mechanical press which uses water for tool cooling, during the manufacture of wheel nuts, made of SAE 1045 steel. Results were based: (i) on the analysis of the surface and cross section of six punches in a scanning electronic microscope, (ii) on nanohardness analyses and (iii) as well as on mass and dimensional variations. Results pointed to the punch wear in the first forged pieces, due to oxides transferring from blank to the punch surface. On this transferred layer to punch surface, have also found damage caused by abrasive wear and thermal fatigue.
