Modelling the buried human body environment in upland climes using three contrasting field sites

Wilson, Andrew S., Janaway, Robert C., Holland, Andrew D., Dodson, Hilary I., Baran, Eve N., Pollard, A. Mark, Tobin, Desmond J. January 2007 (has links)
No / Despite an increasing literature on the decomposition of human remains, whether buried or exposed, it is important to recognise the role of specific microenvironments which can either trigger or delay the rate of decomposition. Recent casework in Northern England involving buried and partially buried human remains has demonstrated a need for a more detailed understanding of the effect of contrasting site conditions on cadaver decomposition and on the microenvironment created within the grave itself. Pigs (Sus scrofa) were used as body analogues in three inter-related taphonomy experiments to examine differential decomposition of buried human remains. They were buried at three contrasting field sites (pasture, moorland, and deciduous woodland) within a 15km radius of the University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK. Changes to the buried body and the effect of these changes on hair and associated death-scene textile materials were monitored as was the microenvironment of the grave. At recovery, 6, 12 and 24 months post-burial, the extent of soft tissue decomposition was recorded and samples of fat and soil were collected for gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis. The results of these studies demonstrated that (1) soil conditions at these three burial sites has a marked effect on the condition of the buried body but even within a single site variation can occur; (2) the process of soft tissue decomposition modifies the localised burial microenvironment in terms of microbiological load, pH, moisture and changes in redox status. These observations have widespread application for the investigation of clandestine burial and time since deposition, and in understanding changes within the burial microenvironment that may impact on biomaterials such as hair and other associated death scene materials.

O'Connor, Sonia A., Ali, Esam M.A., Al-Sabah, S., Anwar, D., Bergström, E., Brown, K.A., Buckberry, Jo, Collins, M., Denton, J., Dorling, K., Dowle, A., Duffey, P., Edwards, Howell G.M., Faria, E.C., Gardner, Peter, Gledhill, Andrew R., Heaton, K., Heron, Carl P., Janaway, Robert C., Keely, B., King, D.G., Masinton, A., Penkman, K.E.H., Petzoldk, A., Pickering, M.D., Rumsbyl, M., Schutkowski, Holger, Shackleton, K.A., Thomas, J., Thomas-Oates, J., Usai, M., Wilson, Andrew S., O'Connor, T.P. No / Archaeological work in advance of construction at a site on the edge of York, UK, yielded human remains of prehistoric to Romano-British date. Amongst these was a mandible and cranium, the intra-cranial space of which contained shrunken but macroscopically recognizable remains of a brain. Although the distinctive surface morphology of the organ is preserved, little recognizable brain histology survives. Though rare, the survival of brain tissue in otherwise skeletalised human remains from wet burial environments is not unique. A survey of the literature shows that similar brain masses have been previously reported in diverse circumstances. We argue for a greater awareness of these brain masses and for more attention to be paid to their detection and identification in order to improve the reporting rate and to allow a more comprehensive study of this rare archaeological survival.

Surrounded by the fame of great genius and benefactor of humanity, Pasteur was linked to major controversy within the scientific community. This thesis deals with some of Pasteur's contributions to the fermentation, putrefaction and reasoning of germ theory of disease, analyzing what was the path taken by the scientist from crystallography to biological conception of disease. It also discusses the position of other scientists in the same period on these subjects. From this research, it was possible to analyze how Pasteur's research transformation took place and what were the arguments and evidence found by him to defend his point of view, that the microorganism was the protagonist of several reactions and transformations of substances and also had influence on other living beings. This work aims to contribute to current studies on Pasteur and his work, which seek to rebuild its image as a great researcher of his time, involved in a large network of scholars, which enabled the development of his investigations / Louis Pasteur dedicou-se a uma grande diversidade de estudos durante sua carreira.

Průzkum a hodnocení stavu dřevěné konstrukce / Survey and evaluation state of timber structures

Zouharová, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
The thesis is focused on the assessment of two wooden roof structures of the building, which is located in Brno on the street Rumiště 8. Parts of the work are also theoretical knowledge of roof structures, building technical survey and diagnostic methods. Rating roof truss was based on a survey of sensory and instrumental methods. In the first step were measured dimensions of roof truss members and were determined roof structures. In the next section was researched damage of elements and his causes. Rehabilitation solution was established for each type of damage to the components resist any attack as long as possible. This report had been prepared for the property owner who plans complete reconstruction.

Návrat do lůna kmene: Tendence v současné kultuře / Back to the Tribe's Womb: Tendencies in Contemporary Culture

Dvořák, Jan January 2014 (has links)
Michel Maffesoli and Zygmunt Bauman add the traits of Benjamin's flâneur to the (neo-)nomad, namely his "flâneur" gaze and his relation to commodities. But in the concept of nomad these traits gain specific nature - on the field of fashion they transform nomad into migrant, who is capable of creative work with vanitas. Nomad as a travelling flâneur is a stranger-guest and becomes a tourist, willingly getting lost in the city and voluntarily being surprised by unexpected encounters. Tourists relation to his memories could be described with Benjamin's description of mémoire involontaire as a revived punctum. A tourist prepares his memories like a nicely descending ruins. Souvenir is his materialised memory. It's not only a duplicated plastic Eiffel tower, but a magic artifact. It's a collective aura, what's on Benjamin's mind when he writes about aura regression. The private aura comes instead, turning things to talismans, reenchanting the world. The era of postmechanical reproduction reminds one, that there is a way to reproduce not just mechanically but biologically: a bricolage remix is made. Souvenirs descend and take shape of hommogenic rummage which reveals the fundamental form of postmodern metamorphosis: recyclation. This metamorphosis can finally be used when analyzing the settler turn into nomad...
