Isso propicia o surgimento de rumos alternativos ao atendimento convencional, possibilitando maior visibilidade de mulheres como as doulas, que prestam constante apoio à parturiente e seu acompanhante, promovendo variadas técnicas de relaxamento, respiração, massagens para minoração da dor, orientação acerca das posições mais confortáveis durante as contrações, além de prover encorajamento e tranquilidade durante o parto. Neste contexto foi realizado um estudo com objetivo de compreender o processo de formação e profissionalização das doulas no Brasil. Os resultados encontram-se disponibilizados em quatro capítulos (artigos e capítulos de livro). O primeiro aborda metassíntese com evidências qualitativas sobre o acompanhamento por doulas no trabalho de parto e no parto. O segundo discute a normatização da Rede Cegonha. O terceiro denota o papel da doula na assistência ao parto e nascimento. O quarto apresenta motivos para formação e atuação profissional das doulas. Com o desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi possível: a) demonstrar evidências positivas para o trabalho da doula (capítulo 1); b)apresentar a necessidade de divulgação e discussão sobre as propostas da rede cegonha(capítulo 2); c) explicitar as facilidades e dificuldades encontradas pelas doulas para o desenvolvimento de seus trabalhos (capítulo 3); d) apresentar os motivos para mulheres buscarem formação para doula, bem como a importância do grupo de referência para sua atuação profissional (capítulo 4). Os estudos sobre doulas precisam ser aprofundados, considerando o desenvolvimento desta ocupação no Brasil. Atentar para a formação destas mulheres pode impulsionar mudanças positivas para qualificar a atenção ao parto e nascimento em todas as regiões brasileiras / Abstract: The various modifications occurring in the care provided by health services to women have demanded better training of the professionals and institutions which attend them. This gives rise to alternatives for the conventional treatments, enabling greater visibility of women such as the "doulas", who provide continuous support to laboring women and their companions, promoting various techniques of relaxation, breathing, massage for the alleviation of pain, guidance on the most comfortable positions during contractions, besides providing encouragement and quietness throughout the period of parturition. In this context a detailed study was carried on in order to understand the overall process of training and action of doulas in Brazil. The research results were available in this thesis in four chapters (articles and book chapters). The first deals metasynthesis with Qualitative evidence of monitoring by doulas during labor and childbirth. The second discusses the standardization of Stork Network. The third denotes the role of doula in childbirth and birth. Fourth features reasons for training and professional performance about doulas. With the development of the research was possible : a) demonstrate positive evidence for the work of doula (Chapter 1 ) ; ) present the need for dissemination and discussion of the proposals Stork network ( Chapter 2 ) ; c ) explain the advantages and difficulties encountered by doulas for the development of their work ( Chapter 3); d ) submit the reasons for women to seek training for doula, and the importance of the reference group for their professional activities (Chapter 4). Studies on doulas need to be deepened, considering this occupation development in Brazil. Straight from Clinicians' Mouths: A Qualitative Exploration of Barriers to Rural Reentry

Offenders returning to the community face a multitude of barriers in the reentry process, including limited resources for mental health treatment, restricted employment opportunities, difficulties with housing, and community stigma. Considering the impact of such barriers, it comes as little surprise that approximately two-thirds of returning citizens are rearrested within three years of release. There are unique, but often unexamined, challenges for offenders returning to rural communities, including lack of transportation, limited access to public or private healthcare, and often extreme poverty. It is also possible that exacerbated barriers to successful treatment and reintegration occur for offenders who have committed specific offenses (i.e., sexual crimes). Treatment providers who work regularly with offenders are familiar with challenges that their clients face, offering unique perspectives from their field of work. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 38 treatment providers in social work, counseling, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy. Using NVivo 10 software, interview footage was transcribed by trained research assistants. Qualitative data were subjected to a two-stage thematic analysis. Initial themes were identified and then examined for overlap and commonality. Similar themes were then condensed into more distinct themes and subthemes, which were then coded from transcripts. Given the additional barriers for offenders returning to a rural community, the purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore the specific impact of rurality on reentry from the perspective of those providing court-ordered treatment services. This was done via the examination of subthemes that emerged under the general theme of "Rural Needs." Each subtheme will be defined and explored individually, as well as in the general context of rural needs, to provide more in-depth understanding of rural offender reentry. A majority of the research on policy and programming for offenders is based in urban areas; however, translating urban models of care to rural communities is difficult. Implications for the impact of rurality on successful reentry in terms of the criminal justice system and treatment will be discussed.

Management training for professional leaders : myth or reality

“Attainment of competency in management and leadership is no longer an optional extra for doctors” (Clark & Armit, 2008). Is management training recognised as necessary and important by professionals who ascend into leadership positions? Are professionals prepared to undertake management training or are their professional qualifications adequate to allow them to be effective managers as leaders? There are three concepts involved here, namely  Management training.  Professionals.  Leadership. The aim of the study was therefore to gain an in depth understanding of whether or not professional leaders need to be managerially trained. The study also attempted to establish the type/aspects of management training that the leaders should be trained in, and whether other factors such as experience influence the need for management training. Ultimately, the success or failure of management training for professional leaders needs to be assessed against the performance of their organisations and the self. An in depth literature review of the concepts of the research was conducted. The Chief Executive Officers of various tertiary/central academic hospitals were selected to be interviewed for this qualitative study by means of the purposive, quota sampling technique. In depth semi-structured interviews were held with seven academic hospital CEOs, with interviews lasting on average 1 hour 36 minutes (see Appendix B). The CEOs were also requested to complete the long Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. The information received was analysed using a mixture of content, constant comparative, phenomenological, narrative, and discourse analysis. The key findings revealed that management training was necessary as an entity and should be attained regardless of professional training, leadership, or management experience. It was also noted, interestingly, that although the CEOs person-organisation fit was a high 71% and turnover intent a low 14%, job satisfaction was only average in the region of 60%. The sample number was too small to make meaningful conclusions. The participation of women in rap music: An exploratory study of the ro1e of gender discrimination

Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / This study is about the way in which men, specifically in the local context of Cape Town, dominate the rap music culture. Globally, rapping is associated with poetic lyrics that express the rappers' environment or worldview. Historically women's worldviews were kept silent and it is within this context that this investigation explored why women are not represented well in the rap culture. The significance of the study lies in the possibility of identifying ways in which women interested in becoming rap artists could overcome the barriers that currently inhibit their participation. This project represents an interdisciplinary study that falls within the realms of social psychology, music, feminism and social constructionism. Specifically, this thesis employed feminist psychology and social constructionism to construe and interpret the roles of women in rap music. Working within a qualitative feminist framework, the data was gathered through focus groups and in-depth telephonic individual interviews with participants. The discussions held with the participants were transcribed and the data was analyzed thematically. The results reflect that women feel that they are being discriminated against in rap culture on the basis of their gender. Despite the key finding that women are being discriminated against in the rap culture, it was also found that when the two sexes came together and spoke about the gender inequalities in the culture, a strong awareness of gender sensitivity was created. This study therefore suggests that one powerful way of challenging gender inequality in rap culture may be through raising awareness by way of discussions of gender bias and discrimination at rap forums, radio talk shows and workshops aimed at unifying the South African rap culture.

Student teacher expectations of the role mentor lecturers play in developing teacher identity

Mentoring has been acknowledged as an important foundation of teacher education worldwide and is pivotal to the development of student teachers’ teacher identity, especially during teaching practice. Despite this, mentorship seems to fall short of its intended objectives and student teachers frequently seem to perceive mentors are critical evaluators rather than as mentors. The current descriptive case study forms part of a broader research project, the Peer Enhanced Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, focused on the development of a mentorship intervention for student teachers. To determine the role student teachers expect mentor lecturers to play in the development of their teacher identities, semi-structured, open-ended questionnaires were completed anonymously by 170 student teachers after they had completed their teaching practice. These questionnaires were then analysed using an interpretive approach by means of inductive thematic analysis. Previous work, including Hudson’s Five-factor Model for Effective Teaching, acknowledged the need for mentor lecturers to integrate system requirements, pedagogical knowledge, modelling, feedback and personal attributes in order to perform important mentorship roles. These included mentor lecturers being experts (in subject didactics and pedagogy), models/guides, reflective practitioners, coaches, companions, motivators and change agents. These factors and roles were identified as significant in the current study, although the need for a caring and encouraging relationship between the student teacher and mentor lecturer was also highlighted. The implication is that mentor lecturers should view student teachers more holistically and offer both personal and professional support during their teaching practice, thus indicating the need for a possible sixth factor, namely the context of a safe and nurturing relationship which may aid teacher identity development. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Educational Psychology / MEd / Unrestricted

Rooming Houses and Health: A Case Study

Background: Rooming house residents have high rates of morbidity and mortality, yet little is known about why this disparity in health exists. Research Question: How are rooming houses linked to health? Case: Social exclusion of rooming house residents in downtown Ottawa, bounded by the neighborhood, and Ottawa’s political policies at the time of data collection (September 2019-June 2020). Methodology: A single embedded descriptive case study was informed by multiple sources of evidence, and involved a community advisory group (CAG). Rooming house residents took photos, participated in a community walk-about with participant observations and attended a focus group. Two additional focus groups were conducted; one with fellow rooming house residents, another with the CAG. Interviews with rooming house front-line service providers and a secondary data set of homeless service measures also informed the case. Findings: 1. Rooming house residents (n=10) took 112 photos, and (n=8) took part in a focus group where two broad themes emerged: Housing is health care, and just managing today. 2. Interviews with front-line service providers (n=11) focused on two themes: There are many costs to living in a rooming house, and rooming house front-line service providers wear many hats. 3. Between a sample of sheltered homeless (n = 60) and rooming house residents (n=52), there was no difference found for several health indicators, including frequency of care received in the emergency room, hospitalization as an inpatient, and if substance use made it difficult to stay or afford housing. Focus groups with rooming house residents who did not take photos (n=10) and the GAG (n=6) contributed to persona co-creation revealing financial and contextual factors affecting the health of rooming house residents. Conclusion: The shared spaces of rooming houses create a tension between offering community and creating a risk environment. The negative health consequences to living in a rooming house are mitigated by the many roles that rooming house front-line service providers play in filling gaps. This study suggests the need to definitively position rooming house residents on the housing continuum in order to ensure equitable distribution of resources to optimize the health of this vulnerable population.

Indicators of trauma in a single sand tray scene of a rural school youth

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which a rural school youth indicates trauma in a single sand tray scene. An empirical study of limited extent, which was conducted from the interpretivistic paradigm and qualitative by nature, was undertaken. A clinical case study was utilised as research design and document analysis was employed as data collection method. The case record of a Grade 9 learner with a complex trauma history, who attended a secondary school in a low-resourced community in Mpumalanga, was selected as the principal participant in the study. Sandplay assessment, trauma indicators and rural youths were the main concepts guiding the study. The findings of the empirical study were, firstly, that the ways a rural school youth indicated trauma in a single sand tray scene corresponded with trauma indications in Sandplay literature, of which, secondly, scenes appearing hostile, sexualised, bounded-off, rigid, obstructed or empty and devoid of life (e.g. people, vegetation) and scenery were examples. This reflected the universal dynamism of trauma. Parental couple experiences of transracial adoption : a phenomenological study

In South Africa, transracial adoption continues to be an option for many parents wanting to adopt a child. Previous research on transracial adoption has focused mainly on the psychological implications and the racial identity development of transracial adoptees. This qualitative study aimed to explore parental couples’ experiences of transracial adoption and was located within a phenomenological framework. In-depth interviews were conducted with three couples and the data were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Six themes were generated from the data. These include the aspects that were involved in beginning their journey to adoption, the pre and post adoption process, the avenues of support that were available to the participants, important aspects relating to the adopted child, the challenges that were experienced as unique to transracial adoption, and the implications of race in a transracial adoption.
