Glinec, Yannick 22 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Code generation and simulation of an automatic, flexible QC-LDPC hardware decoderVon Leipzig, Mirko 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Iterative error correcting codes such as LDPC codes have become prominent in modern
forward error correction systems. A particular subclass of LDPC codes known as quasicyclic
LDPC codes has been incorporated in numerous high speed wireless communication
and video broadcasting standards. These standards feature multiple codes with varying
codeword lengths and code rates and require a high throughput. Flexible hardware that is
capable of decoding multiple quasi-cyclic LDPC codes is therefore desirable.
This thesis investigates binary quasi-cyclic LDPC codes and designs a generic, flexible VHDL
decoder. The decoder is further enhanced to automatically select the most likely decoder
based on the initial a posterior probability of the parity-check equation syndromes.
A software system is developed that generates hardware code for such a decoder based on
a small user specification. The system is extended to provide performance simulations for
this generated decoder. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Iteratiewe foutkorreksiekodes soos LDPC-kodes word wyd gebruik in moderne voorwaartse
foutkorreksiestelsels. ’n Subklas van LDPC-kodes, bekend as kwasisikliese LDPC-kodes,
word in verskeie hoëspoed-kommunikasie- en video-uitsaaistelselstandaarde gebruik. Hierdie

Cardinal spline wavelet decomposition based on quasi-interpolation and local projectionAhiati, Veroncia Sitsofe 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Mathematics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Wavelet decomposition techniques have grown over the last two decades into a powerful tool
in signal analysis. Similarly, spline functions have enjoyed a sustained high popularity in the
approximation of data.
In this thesis, we study the cardinal B-spline wavelet construction procedure based on quasiinterpolation
and local linear projection, before specialising to the cubic B-spline on a bounded
interval.
First, we present some fundamental results on cardinal B-splines, which are piecewise polynomials
with uniformly spaced breakpoints at the dyadic points Z/2r, for r ∈ Z. We start our wavelet
decomposition method with a quasi-interpolation operator Qm,r mapping, for every integer r,
real-valued functions on R into Sr
m where Sr
m is the space of cardinal splines of order m, such
that the polynomial reproduction property Qm,rp = p, p ∈ m−1, r ∈ Z is satisfied. We then
give the explicit construction of Qm,r.
We next introduce, in Chapter 3, a local linear projection operator sequence {Pm,r : r ∈ Z}, with
Pm,r : Sr+1
m → Sr
m , r ∈ Z, in terms of a Laurent polynomial m solution of minimally length
which satisfies a certain Bezout identity based on the refinement mask symbol Am, which we
give explicitly.
With such a linear projection operator sequence, we define, in Chapter 4, the error space sequence
Wr
m = {f − Pm,rf : f ∈ Sr+1
m }. We then show by solving a certain Bezout identity that there
exists a finitely supported function m ∈ S1
m such that, for every r ∈ Z, the integer shift
sequence { m(2 · −j)} spans the linear space Wr
m . According to our definition, we then call
m the mth order cardinal B-spline wavelet. The wavelet decomposition algorithm based on the
quasi-interpolation operator Qm,r, the local linear projection operator Pm,r, and the wavelet m,
is then based on finite sequences, and is shown to possess, for a given signal f, the essential
property of yielding relatively small wavelet coefficients in regions where the support interval of
m(2r · −j) overlaps with a Cm-smooth region of f.
Finally, in Chapter 5, we explicitly construct minimally supported cubic B-spline wavelets on a
bounded interval [0, n]. We also develop a corresponding explicit decomposition algorithm for a
signal f on a bounded interval.

Throughout Chapters 2 to 5, numerical examples are provided to graphically illustrate the theoretical
results.

A aplicabilidade do modelo é demonstrada através do estudo da capacidade de rotação plástica de vigas de concreto armado, confrontando-se os resultados numéricos com os experimentais / A combined constitutive model based on the Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) is presented to represent the nonlinear behavior of quasi-brittle materials, which present different response when subjected to tension or compreession. The constitutive model is a composition of two simple and specific models designed to treat each type of behavior. The combined model is able to deal with alternating load (tension-compression), involving formation, closure and reopening cracks. To model the compressive behavior, a degradation criterion based on the second invariant of the deviatoric part of the effective stress tensor (Von Miser or J2 criterion) is used. To simulate cracking, a damage model with degradation criterion based on the strain energy associated to the positive part the effective stress tensor is adopted. The combination of the models is made on the basis of the effective stresses associated to two distinct scales (coarse and fine scales) The model is able to represented the formation of discontinuities in the displacement field (strong discontinuities) for quasi-brittle materials. The region of strain localization (fracture process zone) is described by a softening law which establishes dissipation energy compatible with the fracture energy. The continuous region is described by the J2 damage model, with parameters ajusted to describle the compressive nonlinear behavior in compression. Some basic tests are performed to asses the ability of the model to represent the main aspects of the behavior of quasi-brittle materials. The applicability of the model is demonstrated by the study of the plastic rotation capacity of reinforced concrete beams, comparing the numerical responses with the experimental ones

Robustness analysis of VEGA launcher model based on effective sampling strategyDong, Siyi January 2016 (has links)
An efficient robustness analysis for the VEGA launch vehicle is essential to minimize the potential system failure during the ascending phase. Monte Carlo sampling method is usually considered as a reliable strategy in industry if the sampling size is large enough. However, due to a large number of uncertainties and a long response time for a single simulation, exploring the entire uncertainties sufficiently through Monte Carlo sampling method is impractical for VEGA launch vehicle. In order to make the robustness analysis more efficient when the number of simulation is limited, the quasi-Monte Carlo(Sobol, Faure, Halton sequence) and heuristic algorithm(Differential Evolution) are proposed. Nevertheless, the reasonable number of samples for simulation is still much smaller than the minimal number of samples for sufficient exploration. To further improve the efficiency of robustness analysis, the redundant uncertainties are sorted out by sensitivity analysis. Only the dominant uncertainties are remained in the robustness analysis. As all samples for simulation are discrete, many uncertainty spaces are not explored with respect to its objective function by sampling or optimization methods. To study these latent information, the meta-model trained by Gaussian Process is introduced. Based on the meta-model, the expected maximum objective value and expected sensitivity of each uncertainties can be analyzed for robustness analysis with much higher efficiency but without loss much accuracy.

Partial discharge and streamer characteristics of transformer liquids under AC stressLiu, Zhao January 2017 (has links)
Pre-breakdown phenomena in transformer liquids have been extensively investigated. The published work can be broadly categorised into streamer and partial discharge (PD) studies, with the former focusing on physical nature and the latter being more relevant to industrial applications. Mineral oil, as the dominant candidate, has been used in power transformers for over a century. In the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in filling power transformers with alternative liquids, e.g. esters and gas-to-liquids (GTL) based oils. This work aims to correlate the PD and streamer characteristics of three transformer liquids under AC stress. The liquids include a conventional mineral oil (Gemini X), a GTL oil (Diala S4 ZX-I) and a synthetic ester (MIDEL 7131). A circuit arrangement in compliance with the IEC 60270 was used, which allowed PD measurements, wide-band current measurements and streamer shadowgraphs to be obtained simultaneously. To simulate the quasi-uniform electric fields in transformers, a plane-to-plane electrode system incorporating an adjustable needle protrusion (PNP) was employed. A needle-to-plane electrode system (NP), which is widely used in the field, was also employed to provide reference results. Based on the PD measurement results, the PD inception fields (PDIFs) of the three liquids were found to be independent of electrode geometry for the investigated tip radius. The PDIF of the synthetic ester is about 13% lower than that of the mineral oil or the GTL oil. Compared with the PD magnitude, the pulse repetition rate is more sensitive to liquid type. At the same voltage under both the NP and PNP configurations, the synthetic ester has the highest pulse repetition rate, followed by the GTL oil, and then the mineral oil. In divergent electric fields (provided by the NP electrode system), it was found that the streamers in the three liquids have a similar stopping length at the same voltage, even though the apparent charge readings are not the same. The correlations between PD and streamer characteristics indicated that the synthetic ester has the highest branching tendency, and has therefore the smallest stopping length per unit of apparent charge among the three liquids. In quasi-uniform electric fields (provided by the PNP electrode system), the streamer branching tendencies of the three liquids were largely suppressed. The change from a propagation-induced breakdown in divergent fields to an initiation-induced breakdown in quasi-uniform fields was explained. The correlations between PD and streamer characteristics revealed that the same apparent charge can indicate different levels of streamer development in the insulation, depending on the uniformity of the electric field. Overall, interpreting PD measurement results needs to take the electric field uniformity (PD location) as well as liquid type into consideration.

Squelettes algorithmiques méta-programmés : implantations, performances et sémantique / Metaprogrammed algorithmic skeletons : implementations, performances and semanticsJaved, Noman 21 October 2011 (has links)
Structured parallelism approaches are a trade-off between automatic parallelisation and concurrent and distributed programming such as Pthreads and MPI. Skeletal parallelism is one of the structured approaches. An algorithmic skeleton can be seen as higher-order function that captures a pattern of a parallel algorithm such as a pipeline, a parallel reduction, etc. Often the sequential semantics of the skeleton is quite simple and corresponds to the usual semantics of similar higher-order functions in functional programming languages. The user constructs a parallel program by combined calls to the available skeletons. When one is designing a parallel program, the parallel performance is of course important. It is thus very interesting for the programmer to rely on a simple yet realistic parallel performance model. Bulk Synchronous Parallelism (BSP) offers such a model. As the parallelism can now be found everywhere from smart-phones to the super computers, it becomes critical for the parallel programming models to support the proof of correctness of the programs developed with them. . The outcome of this work is the Orléans Skeleton Library or OSL. OSL provides a set of data parallel skeletons which follow the BSP model of parallel computation. OSL is a library for C++ currently implemented on top of MPI and using advanced C++ techniques to offer good efficiency. With OSL being based over the BSP performance model, it is possible not only to predict the performances of the application but also provides the portability of performance. The programming model of OSL is formalized using the big-step semantics in the Coq proof assistant. Based on this formal model the correctness of an OSL example is proved.

Relaxação não-colisional em plasmas não-neutrosTeles, Tarcisio Nunes January 2008 (has links)
In this work a theoretical framework is presented which allows us to quantitatively predict the final stationary state achieved by a non-neutral plasma during a process of collisionless relaxation. As a specific application, the theory is used to study relaxation of charged-particle beams. It is shown that a fully matched beam relaxes to the Lynden-Bell distribution. However, when a mismatch is present and the beam oscillates, parametric resonances lead to a corehalo phase separation. The approach developed accounts for both the density and the velocity distributions in the final stationary state.

The process of damage in quasi-fragile materials is characterized by loss of isotropy for certain load levels. The strain localization, the cooperative effect between damaged regions and the avalanche of ruptures are particular features in measuring the damage in this kind of material. The mentioned features create different forms of energy dissipation, which are not easy to represent with a continuous approach. In the present work a version of the Lattice Discrete Element Method is employed. In this method the mass of the solid is concentrated on node points, which are interconnected by uniaxial elements. These elements have a bilinear constitutive law, which is used to simulate the rupture of the structure under study. The node distribution allows the formation of a regular three-dimensional lattice, and from this spatial discretization it is possible to arrive at a system of equations of motion, which is solved by an explicit numerical integration scheme (central difference). In this method the fracture and fragmentation are taken into account in a natural manner, since the bars that reached their limit strength during the process are disabled of the system, respecting the energy balance. It is possible to introduce heterogeneity in the model considering the material properties as random fields with spatial Weibull probability distribution and known correlation length. In this dissertation, the damage process, which appears in structures of simple geometry, when they are loaded until collapse, is analysed. Different indexes are presented to perform the measurement of the damage. The performance of those indexes, and the way they help in the interpretation of the damage evolution, are discussed in this paper.
