Influence of Ferrite Content on Fatigue Strength of Quenched and Tempered 42CrMoS4 Steel

Hanno, Mithaq Elias January 2012 (has links)
Specimens of steel 42CrMoS4 were quenched from the austenite (γ) and the ferrite (α) + austenite + cementite phase fields to produce fully martensitic matrices with 0 – 14 % ferrite dispersed in the matrix. After tempering at 300°C or 600°C mechanical and fatigue properties were determined. As expected yield strength, tensile strength and hardness decreased with increased tempering temperature and ferrite content. Quite unexpected, the fatigue properties were mildly affected. A small amount of ferrite, approximately 3% even appears to improve the fatigue strength. Then, at even higher ferrite amounts, slightly below 20% the fatigue strength appears to decrease again.

January 2011 (has links)
A expectativa desta contribuição é de que disponibilize maiores informações em metalurgia da soldagem para atender principalmente o segmento de fabricação de equipamentos e sistemas mecânicos aplicados a serviços abrasivos / Abstract: This study evaluated the mechanical, macro and microestrurtural events on metal weld joints of quenched and tempered structural steel, welded by eletric arc process with protective gas (GMAW) of 80% Ar-20% CO2 in conventional and pulsed mode using metal cored electrode, designation AWS E70C-6M. The welds were made in two passes, one on each side of joints prepared with 60º double "V" bevel. For a given theoretical energy welding, comaratively there was increases in the efficiencies of deposition and thermal for pulsed arc welding process, and a greater influence on the dilution of the base metal and the geometrical characteristics of the cords. However, was observed a higher mechanical strength for a weld metals obtained in conventional manner, attributed to the occurrence of an intense microstructural refinement in this welding condition. The expectation of this contribution is to make evailable more information on welding metallurgy to meet especially the segment of manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems applied to abrasive services / Mestre

An Integrated Time-Temperature Approach for Predicting Mechanical Properties of Quenched and Tempered Steels

O'Connell, Corey James 23 June 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to develop a steel tempering model that is useful to the commercial heat treater. Most of the tempering models reported address isothermal conditions which are not typical of most heating methods used to perform the tempering heat treatment. In this work, a non-isothermal tempering model was developed based on the tempering response of four steel alloys. This tempering model employs the quantity resulting from the numerical integration of the time-temperature profiles of both the heating and cooling portions of the tempering cycle. The model provided a very good agreement between experimental and predicted hardness when secondary hardening did not occur. The developed tempering model was then used as the basis for a process simulation model of a large indirect gas-fired furnace. Unlike the small-scale laboratory experiments performed in the development stage of this work, the temperature variation in this furnace was significant. Recording the temperature with time at 29 locations within the furnace allowed for suitable characterization of the temperature variation. The thermal data was used as inputs in a finite element method model and the time – temperature profiles of three production heavy truck side rails were then simulated. The tempering model provided a good prediction of the tempered hardness compared to experimental measurements. Finally, conclusions are drawn and suggestions are made for future work. / Ph. D.

This restriction in the cutting speed is associated with the difficulty of synchronizing the tool s rotation speed and feed velocity in the process. This fact restricts the flexibility and makes machining lead times longer when manufacturing of components with threads is required. An alternative to the constraints imposed by the tap is the thread milling with helical interpolation technique. The technique is the fusion of two movements: rotation and helical interpolation. The tools may have different configurations: a single edge or multiple edges (axial, radial or both). However, thread milling with helical interpolation technique is relatively new and there are limited studies on the subject, a fact which promotes challenges to its wide application in the manufacturing shop floor. The objective of this research is determine the performance of different types of tools in the thread milling with helical interpolation technique using hardened steel workpieces. In this sense, four tool configurations were used for threading milling in AISI 4340 quenched and tempered steel (40 HRC). The results showed that climb cut promoted a greater number of machined threads, regardless of tool configuration. The upcut milling causes chippings in cutting edge, while the climb cutting promotes abrasive wear.

Henschel, Sebastian 13 February 2019 (has links)
