Reduction of vestigial sideband effects due to multipath transmission in terrestrial broadcast television

In terrestrial television transmission multiple paths of various lengths can occur between the transmitter and the receiver. Such paths occur because of reflections from objects outside the direct transmission path. The multipath signals arriving at the receiver are all detected along with the intended signal causing time displaced replicas called 'ghosts' to appear on the television picture. With an increasing number of people living within built up areas, ghosting is becoming commonplace and therefore deghosting is becoming increasingly important. This thesis uses a deterministic time domain approach to deghosting, resulting in a simple solution to the problem of removing ghosts. A new video detector is presented which reduces the synchronous detector local oscillator phase error, caused by any practical size of ghost, to a lower level than has ever previously been achieved. From the new detector, dispersion of the video signal is minimised and a known closed-form time domain description of the individual ghost components within the detected video is subsequently obtained. Developed from mathematical descriptions of the detected video, a new specific deghoster filter structure is presented which is capable of removing both inphase (I) and also the phase quadrature (Q) induced ghost signals derived from the VSB operation. The new deghoster filter requires much less hardware than any previous deghoster which is capable of removing both I and Q ghost components. A new channel identification algorithm was also required and written which is based upon simple correlation techniques to find the delay and complex amplitude characteristics of individual ghosts. The result of the channel identification is then passed to the new I and Q deghoster filter for ghost cancellation. Generated from the research work performed for this thesis, five papers have been published.

<p>Som ett sista moment under magisterutbildningen Teknisk Produkt- och Produktionsframtagning skulle ett examensprojekt utföras. Projektgruppen fick kontakt med INIS AB genom handledaren Hans</p><p>Skillius i början av terminen angående ett projekt de behövde hjälp med.</p><p>Syftet med projektet var att leverera en lösning på en kundanpassad receptionsterminal som är baserad på mjukvaran INIS 4 Check In. Projektgruppen skulle även tillämpa och fördjupa tidigare inhämtade kunskaper inom programmet TPP och ingående temaområdet design.</p><p>Projektet har utförts i fyra olika faser, dessa var förstudie, idégenerering, konceptframtagning och slutförande. Under förstudien lades grunden för det kommande arbetet. Beställaren och dess kund</p><p>analyserades vilket bidrog till att de dokument som krävdes för att projektet skulle kunna genomföras på ett effektivt sätt genererades. Då förstudien var genomförd påbörjades det kreativa arbetet i</p><p>idégenereringsfasen. Lösningar utvecklades genom brainstormings och skissning, inspiration hämtades från bland annat studiebesök. Då lösningsförslagen utvärderats inleddes fas tre, konceptframtagningen. I denna fas visualiserades koncepten i Catia och presenterades för beställaren och kunden. I samråd med dessa aktörer valdes två koncept ut som skulle tas vidare in i nästa fas. Under slutförandefasen genererades detaljlösningar och underlag för kostnadsuppskattning och prototyptillverkning togs fram.</p><p>Projektet har resulterat i två receptionsterminallösningar som är unika för både beställaren och kunden. Målet som fastställdes i början av projektet var att ta fram en prototyp av terminalen, detta mål har ej uppnåtts under projekttiden. Under 2008 skall beställare och kund besluta vilket av koncepten som skall tillverkas och placeras i kontoren på Valhall Park.</p><p>Projektet anses i sin helhet varit väldigt givande för projektgruppen då det omfattats av det valda temaområdet design. Utöver möjligheten att få formge en produkt som skall tillverkas och säljas har</p><p>projektgruppen även fått användning av tidigare inhämtade kunskaper inom projektledning, konstruktion och produktutveckling.</p><p>Både projektgruppen, beställaren och kunden är nöjda med resultatet av projektet och ser fram emot att få se den slutgiltiga receptionsterminalen.</p>

Latinas in the city: a discussion of how young Mexican women identify and engage with Sex and the City

Globalization trends and treaties, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), have increased the access and flow of United States media and popular culture products in Mexico. Limited research has been done examining the exposure of Mexican audiences to U.S. media products and the possibility of mass media’s impact on Mexican cultural identity. This qualitative study examines how twenty college-educated Mexican women identify and engage with the transnational popular culture text of Sex and the City (SATC). A multi-disciplinary theoretical approach, mainly from cultural studies and media studies, provides the backbone for my study of a foreign audience’s identification and engagement with a U.S. popular culture text. Thematic categorization of my interview data showed that genre, gender, class and location all played a role in the media engagement process. SATC enabled these twenty women to examine their lived experiences in Mexican society and be exposed to alternative viewpoints. The women interviewed were active audience members that discussed their experiences as college-educated, career driven women associated with modernity but living in the traditional, patriarchal society of Mexico. The women interviewed preferred watching television from other countries, such as the U.S., because it resonated with their lived experiences more than the telenovelas, which are the most common form of television programming in Latin America. In terms of discussing the representation of women on SATC, women talked about the gender roles, myths and structural forces of Mexican society to engage in resistive pleasure and to talk about gender politics. For these Mexican women, discussing SATC allowed them to express concerns over the representation of women in telenovelas, the importance of having alternative viewpoints available to women, and the experiences that have allowed them to foster spaces for change based on SATC’s content and characters. While factors, such as education, socioeconomics and geographic location framed the respondent comments, SATC was a source of strategic knowledge and cultural capital for women to open up new discussions with friends and family, new ways of looking and living out their sexuality, and ideas of the female body.

Standing at the Precipice: Restrained Modernism in the Fiction of E.M. Forster, Nella Larsen, and Elizabeth Bowen

In the field of literary modernism, value has been assigned most often to texts that display a certain kind of innovation: aggressive, destructive, and difficult. Other, quieter texts have been relegated to the periphery of the modernist canon. This dissertation, contributing to the work of the New Modernist Studies, argues for an expansion of how critics define innovation and, by extension, modernism. Through close reading and thorough analysis of critical reception, I explore a <“>restrained<”> modernism in the stories and novels of E.M. Forster, Nella Larsen, and Elizabeth Bowen, demonstrating how their innovation proceeds from and depends on their performance of clarity and their deconstruction of traditional forms from within. These three authors strategically deploy familiar traditions like the female bildungsroman, social satire, and the tragic mulatta tale in order to explore the queer agency of restrained subjectivities trapped inside. Forster, Larsen, and Bowen defy critical accusations of timidity, conservativism, and failure, critiquing the totalizing identity categories of nation, race, sexuality, and gender and suggesting the quiet yet radical power of a literary--and modernist--restraint.

Pedagogy, class and culture : a study of young children's learning at home and school

This study investigates the home and school learning of a sample of sixteen four year- old children who started school in a working-class neighbourhood in an English provincial town in September 1997. The children, from English and Bangladeshi families, are viewed as embedded cases within a single case study of a Reception class. The study uses mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, within a broadly ethnographic approach, to describe the children's learning in their families, and to monitor their progress throughout the Reception year. The children's attainments were assessed at age 4, when they entered school, and again the following July. The study constructs and analyses its data on the children's learning within a framework of concepts derived from the social theories of Basil Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and the forms of capital are used to describe and analyse the ways in which children acquire their individual 'systems of dispositions' towards learning in their families. Bernstein's theory of pedagogic discourse is employed to compare the curriculum, pedagogy and evaluation practised in children's homes with that of their Reception classroom. Both theorists attribute the differential educational and social success of children from different backgrounds to the symbolic control which transmits broad macro power relations into socialising institutions such as families and schools. The thesis focuses in turn on: the habitus and capital of individual families within their social and ethnic groups; the curriculum and pedagogy of children's homes; the pedagogic discourse of the classroom; children's adaptation to school, and attainments on entry; and their Reception progress and outcomes. Throughout the thesis a series of individual case studies illustrates the ways in which the regulative and instructional discourses of home and school influence children's social and cognitive development, and their school achievement.

Reception classes : a model for bridging informal and formal education

An introductory description of the life-world of the preschool child was given. It is essential for the child to orientate himself in relation to his world; and for this purpose he must understand the significance of other people, objects/ ideas and himself The bases of relationships which the preschool child forms, namely the physical, psychological, social and cultural bases, were described. This was followed by an examination of the relationships he forms with himself, his parents, peers, objects/ideas, and religion The self-actualization of the preschool child as a person was discussed; that is helping the child to become the best that he is able to become. Conditions for the emergence of school readiness, criteria for school readiness and factors hindering school readiness were examined. An overview was provided of preschool education in the Republic of South Africa with specific reference to its origin and development thereof in the different provinces before 1994. Attention was also given to the inter-provincial movement regarding preschool as well as the present status of reception classes in the country. A literature study was also made of the existing preschool models for the different race groups in KwaZulu-Natal (former Natal), as well as governmental and non-governmental involvement in preschool education. The reception class model was discussed with reference to the programmes offered, curriculum, accreditation, training of teachers and funding. The quality of preschool education presently rendered in KwaZulu-Natal was explored with regard to the training of teachers, pupil-teacher ratio and preschool facilities. In conclusion, a summary of the investigation and findings emanating from the literature study was presented Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made: Provision for reception classes should form part of the free and compulsory education plan of the government. Urgent attention should be given to parent guidance and involvement programmes in the education of preschool children.
