A linguistic investigation of the relationship between physiology and handshape.Ann, Jean January 1993 (has links)
There are two main hypotheses examined in the dissertation. The first is that the physiology of the hand provides motivation for the claim that sign language handshapes can be considered easy, hard or even impossible to articulate. The second hypothesis is that easy handshapes occur more often than expected, hard handshapes occur less often than expected and impossible handshapes don't occur at all within a single sign language. These hypotheses are examined in the following ways: first, I provide a detailed explanation of the physiology of the hand from which I conclude that not all fingers are equal in skill and not all configurations a hand may assume are equally easy. Second, based on the physiology, I propose a metric for determining which handshapes are "easy" and which are "difficult". Third, I examine whether the "easy" handshapes occur more often than expected, while the "hard" handshapes occur less often than expected in the signs of two languages, American Sign Language (ASL) and Taiwan Sign Language (TSL). I conclude that the hypothesis that the "easy" handshapes occur more often than expected and the "hard" handshapes occur less often than expected is supported in approximately half of the cases.

Identification and resolution of problems with methodology used in selection of technological concepts for R & D supportHardman, William L. 06 1900 (has links)
CIVINS / This project is concerned with evaluation of the merits of competing technological concepts and managing the R&D investments needed to bring them to fruition. A weakness of the current R&D process is that arguments regarding who should receive funding come from a concept's proponents, who are usually interested and biased. More objective evaluation methods are needed. As part of this work it is important to understand better how qualified experts evaluate technological concepts. Can a probabilistically formulated method of integrating knowledge of various performance attributes provide better understanding of the likely performance of a technological concept? This is the question of interest. / CIVINS

Coparenting and parental school involvementBerryhill, Micha Blake January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Jared R. Anderson / Parental school involvement is associated with positive social, psychological, and academic child outcomes. Beyond school, demographic, and individual influences, research is limited regarding the link between family-level processes and parental school involvement. Guided by family systems theory, this study used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 1,896) to examine the link between coparenting support and mothers’ and fathers’ home-based school involvement and school-based school involvement when the child was nine years-old. Additionally, this study tested if parental union transitions (e.g., parental union dissolution; parental union formation; stably coresident relationship) significantly moderated these relationships. Latent variable structural equation modeling results revealed that higher levels of coparenting support was associated with higher levels of mothers’ and fathers’ home-based school involvement, and higher levels of mothers’ and fathers’ school-based involvement. Union transition was not a significant moderator between coparenting support and mother and father home- and school-based school involvement.

On Aspects Relating To A Hydrochlorination Facility For The Processing Of Refinery Precious Metal Residue Materials.Fortmann, Noel Alwin. January 1990 (has links)
A project report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering,
University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in partial
fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master
of Science in Engineering. / A hydrochlorination facility was developed for tile
processing of refinery precious metal residue materials
on the laboratory and pilot scale. Hazard
elements were identified and evaluated using an Event
Tree Analysis. An exponential technique was applied
to estimate the cost of the proposed production hydrochlorination
facility. The estimated cost was R120 000.
The Expected Present Value Ratio was +190 which indicated
satisfactory project economics.
The reactor material for the pilot scale unit was
selected using a weighted values quantitative material
selection procedure. Stainless steel Type 316L and
Type 310 were selected. Failure of the Type 516L
reactor occurred after 40 hours service. The mode of
failure was extensive surface scaling which was attributed
to the hydrogen chloride, sulphide gases and
1 000 °c operating envirornment.
Subject to certain provisions it would be feasible to
commission a safe and profitable production hydrochlorination
facility. The consumable reactor concept was
based on its replacement after 40 hours service. This
was justifiable because of the high value of the material
and the saving in down-stream processing costs. / Andrew Chakane 2018

Experimental investigation of combined infra-red suppression and tail rotor elimination helicopter anti-torque systemBouwer, Pieter 17 August 2016 (has links)
BRANCH OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING
UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND / An experimental investigation was carried out on a half scale model of a
helicopter COmbined Infra-Red Suppression and Tail rotor Elimination
(CIRSTEL) system to characterise its performance in terms of power
consumption, thrust, pressure drops and temperature reduction. The model
consists of a Circulation Control Tail Boom and Thruster (CCTB&T) with the
hot engine gasses ducted into the tail boom where they are mixed with
ambiant air supplied by a fan situated in the body of the helicopter. The
CCTB&T replaces the conventional tail rotor on a helicopter and supplies the
torque to counter-act the torque applied to the main rotor. The model was
tested using both hot and cold air to simulate the flow of hot engine gasses.
The performance is defined in terms of thrust, power, and mass flow
coefffcients which were found to be constant for the configuration tested. It
was shown that the power requirements of the fan are significantly reduced
by introducing the hot engine gasses into the tail Boom. The temperature of
the hot engine gasses is also reduced from 450°C to approximately 200°C
The surface temperature of the model was found to be less than 55'C of the
configuration.

Fabrication of high efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts.January 2012 (has links)
This thesis focuses primarily on the development of visible-light-driven photocatalysts. These include Cu₂S, CuO/ZnO composites and vanadate doped Ag₃PO₄. The property and activity of the materials were studied. The application and mechanism of the enhancement were also explored. / Firstly, 14-facet polyhedra Chalcocite Cu₂S Nanocrystals were synthesized utilizing solvothermal method. It was found that the presence of trio-n-octylphosphine was essential for the exposure of unconventional faces. Studies of the photoelectrochemical performance have indicated that the polyhedra bounded by facets exhibit much higher activities than Cu₂S hexagonal plates with only facets. / Secondly, a heterostructure of CuO/ZnO was fabricated via photochemical deposition. The formation of p-n junction improved the visible light absorption property of ZnO. Photoluminescence spectra showed diminished peaks caused by recombination of excited electrons and holes in the semiconductor which demonstrated that the heterostructure facilitated the charge separation and thus enhanced the photocatalytic activity. / Thirdly, an oxoanion doping method was employed to improve the properties of Ag₃PO₄. The water oxidation ability was found to be higher than the pure Ag₃PO₄. The doping method was proven to be effective in both improving activity and durability. The mechanism of the doping method was also discussed. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Li, Yecheng. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 71-77). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Abstract (Chinese) --- p.i / Abstract --- p.ii / Acknowledgement --- p.iii / List of Figures --- p.v / Table of Contents --- p.viii / Chapter Chapter 1 --- Introduction --- p.1 / Chapter 1.1. --- Basic Principles of Photocatalysis --- p.1 / Chapter 1.2. --- Strategies to Develop Visible-light-driven Photocatalysts --- p.4 / Chapter 1.2.1. --- Native visible-light-driven photocatalysts --- p.4 / Chapter 1.2.2. --- Ion substitution (doping) --- p.6 / Chapter 1.2.3. --- Solid solution photocatalysts --- p.10 / Chapter 1.2.4. --- Dye sensitization to harvest visible light --- p.13 / Chapter 1.3. --- Strategies to Enhance Photocatalytic Activity --- p.15 / Chapter 1.3.1. --- Interface engineering --- p.15 / Chapter 1.3.2. --- Band gap engineering (Tuning distribution of dopants) --- p.17 / Chapter 1.3.3. --- Crystal structure and morphology engineering --- p.19 / Chapter 1.3.4. --- Cocatalyst loading --- p.23 / Chapter 1.4. --- Summary --- p.25 / Chapter 1.5. --- Objective of the Thesis --- p.25 / Chapter Chapter 2 --- Facet Effect of Copper(I) Sulfide Nanocrystals on Photoelectrochemical Properties --- p.28 / Chapter 2.1. --- Introduction --- p.28 / Chapter 2.2. --- Experimental --- p.30 / Chapter 2.2.1. --- Synthesis --- p.30 / Chapter 2.2.2. --- Characterization --- p.30 / Chapter 2.2.3. --- Photoelectrochemical performance analysis --- p.31 / Chapter 2.3. --- Results and Discussion --- p.32 / Chapter 2.4. --- Conclusions --- p.40 / Chapter Chapter 3 --- CuO-ZnO Composites for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance --- p.41 / Chapter 3.1. --- Introduction --- p.41 / Chapter 3.2. --- Experimental --- p.42 / Chapter 3.2.1. --- Synthesis --- p.42 / Chapter 3.2.2. --- Characterization --- p.43 / Chapter 3.2.3. --- Photoelectrochemical performance analysis --- p.44 / Chapter 3.3. --- Results and Discussion --- p.45 / Chapter 3.4. --- Conclusions --- p.56 / Chapter Chapter 4 --- Vanadate Doped Ag₃PO₄ and Its Enhanced Photoactivity and Durability --- p.57 / Chapter 4.1. --- Introduction --- p.57 / Chapter 4.2. --- Experimental --- p.59 / Chapter 4.2.1. --- Synthesis --- p.59 / Chapter 4.2.2. --- Characterization --- p.59 / Chapter 4.2.3. --- Oxygen evolution tests --- p.60 / Chapter 4.3. --- Results and Discussion --- p.61 / Chapter 4.4. --- Conclusions --- p.68 / Chapter Chapter 5 --- Summary --- p.69 / Reference --- p.71
