¡Saludando al tambor! : el nuevo movimiento de la Bomba puertorriqueña / Saluting the drum! : the new Puerto Rican Bomba movement

Abadía-Rexach, Bárbara I. 03 August 2015 (has links)
Drawing upon Critical Race and racialization theories, this dissertation aims at providing a different approach to “The New Puerto Rican Bomba Movement”. Bomba is a musical genre of African roots developed in Puerto Rico upon the arrival of African populations during the slave trade in the sixteenth century. In the last two decades, a proliferation of Bomba groups and schools performing and teaching this peculiar rhythm has taken place. Through the study of Bomba, I seek to contribute to the understanding of racial dynamics in Puerto Rico, and their intersectionalities with class, gender, and national discourses. Through extended participant observation of Bomba performances, unstructured and structured interviews with Bomba musicians, teachers, and scholars and archival research, my purpose is to question and explore constructions of race in Puerto Rican music, and show how processes of racialization operate both socially and politically in the island. In this sense, Bomba will allow me to analyze how Puerto Rican national identity has been constructed in recent years, which elements have been adopted as a national heritage and which have been forgotten or rejected. At the same time, it will shed light on how national discourse aligns or deviates from current social conditions and racial relationships. Through the case study of “The New Puerto Rican Bomba Movement”, I attempt to unravel two interrelated paradoxes: (1) despite hegemonic discourses on Puerto Rican nationalism, which portray the Puerto Rican subject as mixed race, most Puerto Ricans self-identify racially as white or Black. (2) Based on the assumption of a racially mixed national subject, Puerto Rico reaffirms itself as a racial democracy, “The great Puerto Rican family”. This discourse contrasts with daily speeches and practices that emphasize racial exclusions and inequalities. Paradoxically, despite the fact that Puerto Ricans are considered a racially mixed nation, in the 2000 Census, 80.5 % self identified as white, whereas 8 % chose to identify as Black. A decade later, the results of the 2010 Census showed that 12.4 % of the population identified as Black and 75.8 % as white. / text

Preservation of urban design : the story of Paseo de Diego

Merheb-Emanuelli, Ely Marie 09 September 2015 (has links)
The original design of Paseo de Diego, inaugurated in 1981 as the first full pedestrian mall in Puerto Rico, vanished with the consent of the agencies in charge of historic preservation in the island. Lack of maintenance and other management issues, rather than the architecture itself, led to a revitalization project that erased a vibrant and distinctive example of modernist urban design by a notable Puerto Rican architect in the barrio of Río Piedras, which is currently being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The story of Paseo de Diego recounts the mall's development and recent replacement with a redesign that raises serious questions about age, preservation of rich urban layering, and the policies and regulations protecting significant historic urban fabric.

Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Qu?mica, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2013. / ABSTRACT A sensitive and selective sensor for determination of uric acid and epinephrine in the presence of ascorbic acid by differential pulse voltammetry using a glassy carbon electrode modified with Cu(phen)3(TCNQ)2 (tris(1,10-phenantroline)copper(II) bis(tetracyanoquinodimethanide)) functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes was developed in this work. The composite was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The anodic and cathodic transfer coefficients and the standard rate transfer constant for electrochemical reaction of functionalized nanotubes were determined; the found values were 0,58, 0,41 and 2,9 s-1, respectively. The number of electrons and the heterogeneous rate constant involved in the oxidation reaction of uric acid and epinephrine was calculated, the values obtained were 2 electrons, 2.6 x 104 for 0.1 mmolL-1 and 1.2 x 104 mol-1s-1L for 0.5 mmolL-1 of uric acid and 2 electrons, 3.5x105 for 0,1 mmolL-1 and 1.1x104 mol-1s-1L for 0.5 mmolL-1 of epinephrine. A linear response range from 20 up to 440 ?molL-1, with a sensitivity of 0.024 A.L.mol-1, quantification and detection limits of 23.23 and 7 ?molL-1 for epinephrine and linear response range from 10 up to 420 ?molL-1, with a sensitivity of 0.079 A.L.mol-1, quantification and detection limits of 7.09 and 2.13 ?mol/L for uric acid were obtained for this sensor in optimized conditions.

Qualitative Evaluation of the Rio Rico Fire Department Community Integrated Paramedic Program

Do, Lien, Flores-Keown, Brieanna, Vu, Alicia, Warholak, Terri January 2016 (has links)
Class of 2016 Abstract and Report / Objectives: Specific Aim #1: Assess the impact of the Community Integrated Paramedic program on the participants. Our working hypothesis is that the participants will find the program to be impactful in many aspects and beneficial. Specific Aim #2: The impact of the program on the participating paramedics. Our working hypothesis is that the paramedics will report positive themes as a result of participation in the program. Methods: 5 individuals who were enrolled in the paramedicine program and 6 volunteer paramedics participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Interviews were transcribed data was grouped into categories and subcategories to identify common themes associated with participation in a community paramedicine program for both participants and paramedics. Results: Three primary themes emerged for participants: disease-self management, safety and support. Disease-self management included 7 subdomains: medication management, exercise, diet, resources and utilization, communication with providers, disease education, and self-awareness. Safety included 4 subdomains: medication safety, home safety, fall prevention, and environmental hazards. Support included 2 subdomains: physical and emotional. One primary theme emerged for volunteer paramedics: job satisfaction. Job satisfaction included 8 subdomains: helping people, decreasing emergencies, learning new skills, educating people, expand knowledge base, rewarding experience, building relationships, and documenting impact. Conclusions: A community paramedicine program is positively correlated with emotional support, disease management and safety for participants involved. Additionally, the program is associated with increased job satisfaction for paramedics.
