Le réseau routier québécois est profondément affecté par des problèmes d'orniérage et de fissuration en fatigue qui sont causés par la réduction de la résistance en période de dégel. L'intégration de caractéristiques favorisant le drainage permet de contrer ces problèmes et d'assurer la pérennité de la chaussée. Cette thèse a établi une méthodologie de sélection appropriée et rationnelle de la géométrie et des matériaux de fondation routière qui favorise une réduction rapide du degré de saturation moyen des matériaux de fondation sous la voie de roulement. Contrairement à une analyse traditionnelle du temps de drainage, la méthodologie de sélection est fondée sur le degré de saturation minimal moyen des matériaux de fondation sous la voie de roulement ainsi que sur une période critique qui permet d'intégrer les aspects hydrique et thermique afin d'évaluer les conditions de drainage en période de dégel. Une équation a ainsi été développée pour le degré de saturation minimal moyen en présence de fondations routières bicouches. Les outils de calculs hydrique et thermique, développés dans le cadre de cette étude, ont permis d'effectuer une analyse paramétrique de la période critique. Afin d'éliminer l'effet de barrière capillaire et de réduire la période critique, l'analyse a démontré qu'il est préférable de préconiser un matériau de sous-fondation de faible diamètre équivalent des particules solides dont la conductivité hydraulique à saturation est supérieure à celle du matériau de fondation. De plus, la comparaison de la période critique de fondations routières monocouche et bicouche a démontré que la superposition de matériaux de fondation et de sous-fondation permet de réduire la période critique en favorisant l'écoulement vertical de l'eau vers la couche de sous-fondation. La sélection de matériaux de fondation à granulométrie étalée, dont la conductivité hydraulique à saturation est faible mais la capacité portante élevée, est ainsi justifiée par la présence d'une couche de sous-fondation adaptée. / The Québec road network is profoundly affected by rutting and fatigue cracking problems caused by a resistance reduction during the seasonal thaw period. These problems can be countered by integrating characteristics that favor drainage and improve pavement durability. This thesis has established a methodology for the appropriate and rational selection of pavement geometry and materials that favors a rapid reduction in the average degree of saturation of the base course underlying the traffic lane. Contrary to traditional time to drain analyses, the selection methodology is based on the average minimum base course degree of saturation and a critical period that integrates hydraulic and thermal aspects in order to evaluate drainage conditions during the thaw period. A formula is developed for the average minimum base course degree of saturation of a two-layer, base and subbase, pavement foundation. A parametric analysis of the critical period is accomplished with hydraulic and thermal numerical tools that are developed in the framework of the present study. In order to negate the capillary barrier effect and reduce the critical period, the analysis has shown that it is preferable to use subbase materials with small equivalent particle diameters that have a greater saturated hydraulic conductivity than the base material. Through comparison of one-layer and two-layer pavement foundations, it has also been shown that the superimposition of base and subbase materials reduces the critical period by favoring bottom seepage. Hence, the implementation of a dense graded base material, with low saturated hydraulic conductivity and high bearing capacity, is justified by the presence of an adequate subbase material.

The Conservation of Cultural Routes in Saudi Arabia (The Sultani Hajj Route between Almadinah and Makkah)

The Sultani Hajj Route between AlMadinah and Makkah is one of the most significant heritage properties in Saudi Arabia. However, it has not been identified or designated as a significant cultural route worthy of conservation. Hence, many significant historic elements and sites along the route are being lost or damaged. This thesis was written to use World Heritage Cultural Route criteria to identify the Sultani Hajj Route as a heritage resource worthy of conservation. The thesis reviews UNESCO guidelines and criteria for designating cultural routes on the World Heritage List (WHL), and then applies these guidelines to identify the Sultani Hajj Route for possible designation on the WHL. Based on interviews and field surveys, 77 significant historic properties associated with the Sultani Hajj Route are identified, and 12 of these heritage resources are described in detail. The goal of this thesis is to spark interest in conserving this universally valuable Saudi cultural route while acknowledging that many concerns still need to be addressed, including raising public awareness and increasing public participation in the conservation process.

Zaleznik (1977) addressing “Development of leadership” in Managers and leaders: Are they different? states that, “The development of every person begins in the family . . . Also, beyond early childhood, the patterns of development that affect managers and leaders involve the selective influence of particular people (p.75). This leads to a position of leadership that he earlier suggested, “inevitably requires using power to influence the thoughts and actions of people” (p.67). These stages of leadership correspond with the roots of leadership, the routes to leadership, and the routines in leadership, investigated in this research project. These were drawn, with some modification, from research conducted by Sinclair and Wilson (2002) into leadership in the Australian setting. Having observed the impact of leadership, or the lack of, in both work and community settings, I was interested to investigate what led to a person becoming a leader, and what they thought they did in that role. It was only near the end of my literature review that I came across Sinclair and Wilson’s work and their use of qualitative research for investigating leadership. I have modelled my research project on theirs, to investigate the development and practises of a group of leaders in the New Zealand setting.
