Abstract: Terrain Vagues are the forgotten places in the city, but in conflict, full of memories of the past on the present. This work verifies whether the established concept by Ignasi de Solà-Morales, called as "Terrain vague", who analyses the European contemporary cities, can be applied to the abandoned and derelicts areas in Campinas to describe a situation of abandonment, of a strong memory of place, and multiple and even original possibilities. The areas were identified and analyzed according to its type and origin: Railways and its courtyards abandoned or underused; change or displacement of the industrial areas or lands - "Friche Industrielle", uncompleted projects - stream bank with uncompleted settlements or areas which are characterized as "fringe" of other occupations. Eventually, aims to reveal, through a set of documents and its analysis, the potentiality and the uniqueness of the Terrain Vagues in Campinas. That means bringing to light what they represent to the city - quantitatively and qualitatively. Furthermore it intent to emphasize the need for a more complete approach of these areas before its occupation, that has been happening in a disordered way in recent decades. / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Minefield, Railway, Temple: The Violent Making of Space and Time in Israel/Palestine

Elmakias, Zohar January 2024 (has links)
Israel’s spatial imaginary, as an unsettled project, is in constant negotiation, revision, and transmutation. At the heart of this dissertation is an ethnographic endeavor driven by a reading of the past, present, and future of political and religious struggles in Israel/Palestine through an analysis of actors, practices, and material palimpsests of three sites: a French Mandate building and former Syrian military base in the Golan Heights, turned into a boutique hotel by a security entrepreneur; the longed-for and imagined Third Temple in Jerusalem—today’s Temple Mount—a once marginal messianic scheme currently in revival; and the Jaffa Ottoman train station, reopened as a high-end shopping center and later as a light rail station. Through these sites, this dissertation asks how Israel understands itself vis-à-vis its narrative of a biblical past, its present ‘indigenous’ presence, and its vision or imaginaries of the future.

A vision for the future : a creative balance of technology and architecture of the past, Union Station, Indianapolis, Indiana

Melki, Habib Henry January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and determine different energy components existing within historic buildings that will contribute to the development of guidelines for applying modern technology systems within these strucutres and to show the financial, social and physical benefits, which may result without altering the architectural and cultural significance of the building.Union Station, Indianapolis, is an example of historical and architectural ingenuity. If proper and selected energy systems are applied, Union Station will be a strong active force for revitalizing the surrounding area, which has deteriorated and fallen into disuse in recent times. Similar examples of significant historic buildings are scattered all across the country, and with the new development taking place, these historic structures, which are the physical and visual links between us and our past, are being thregtened for the sake of the "glass-box". This study shows the many advantages in preserving these historic links whether economically, architecturally or socially, by bringing the best technology of both worlds and molding them into one system, in which both technologies work together and compliment each other rather than be an isolated system. / Department of Architecture

Bridging the divide: a creativity hub in Alexandra’s Marlboro Gautrain precinct

Pinto, Miguel Faria Rocha 13 March 2014 (has links)
M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) / Alexandra's Far East Bank, formerly an apartheid buffer zone, is caught up in a reactive process by government to provide both housing and public transport. This process has resulted in a segregated relationship between the Marlboro Gautrain Station and the adjacent Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing scheme. The station is completely cut off from the immediate community by a perimeter fence with 24-hour security. This further entrenches the division between the Gautrain commuters and surrounding community. This forced physical relationship sets up an opportunity to design and create a space that aims to straddle the current socioeconomic gap. After on-site investigation and research, a This project would be the first catalytic response to the City of Johannesburg’s Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF) for Region E (CoJ 2009/10: 149).
