A case study evaluation of the critical factors of change management at passenger rail agency of South Africa

Chaka, Tumelo McDonald January 2014 (has links)
This research is centred on the fundamental analysis that change management within business environment is related to leadership, power bases and organisational culture. The success of organisational change management is commonly dependent on these variables that are interdependent and collectively used. How leaders who are conscious about the power they hold and utilizing each respective power base to effectively manage organisational culture. There is extensive research literature considering the individual variables of leadership, power and organisational culture. The research aims to form a deep dive case study analysis into the interrelationships between the three dimensions. It aims to comprehend the change management initiatives in State-Owned Entities in the context of South Africa and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. Through a case study research approach, which comprised of face-to-face expert interviews and observations with employees from Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa data was collected. Content analysis techniques were applied to determine common trends and relationships across the three key dimensions identified from the literature, which related to each dimension. A number of interesting and useful relationships were uncovered within and between the key drivers and extend the current literature in this field. It was discovered that the leaders who are conscious about their power bases and effectively manage them are able to contribute to a sustainable organisational culture. Through this, the organisation is able to become a perpetual institution where leadership can hand over successful over time this being the fundamental of successful organisational change. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / zkgibs2015 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / Unrestricted

Estudo de via férrea lastreada sobre placa de concreto de cimento Portland / Study of ballasted track over concrete slab of Portland cement

Watanabe, Juliana Silva, 1978- 24 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Cassio Eduardo Lima de Paiva / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Urbanismo / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T08:58:58Z (GMT). The heavy haul lines objective is to carry elevated freight, maintaining speeds that assure a shorter travel time. It must be done safely and, for this, it is required good conditions for the track. This Brazilian railway structure is designed to support 32 tonnes per axle, however to promote a better flow and to become more efficient there is an intention of change this freight to 40 tonnes per axle. Based on that, the aim of this study was to analyze a suitable technical solution t for 40 t/ axle load. Two situations have been evaluated: in one of them it was used a ballast layer over the formation; and in the other one it was adopted a concrete slab between the ballast layer and the formation. For the first situation stresses on rail and formation were calculated based on the theoretical models (Zimmermann and Eisenmann methods), and for the second one, a structure similar to a concrete pavement has been designed (ABCP industrial floor method). For both cases, the tresses on the track have been verified by the computational program FERROVIA. The conclusions were based on comparisons between the stresses values calculated by the theoretical and computational methods / Mestrado / Transportes / Mestra em Engenharia Civil

Creating a Transportation Strategy for North Dakota Exporters

Goldade, Ashley Lynn January 2010 (has links)
North Dakota's transportation problem is centered on geography and volume. Being a land-locked state and not having an intermodal facility within the economic range of 150 miles from North Dakota production sites, transportation costs severely reduce shipper profit margins. Options available to containerized shippers are limited and expensive. The purpose of this research is to develop a model that evaluates tradeoffs regarding the development of intermodal shipping capabilities in North Dakota. The following are specific objectives to the research process: 1. Examine historical and current issues pertaining to intermodal transportation in North Dakota; 2. Develop an empirical model to evaluate intermodal pricing, revenues, and demand; 3. Conduct a sensitivity analysis on key random variables and interpret the results; 4. Analyze a variety of coalition cooperative efforts among key players and their effect on North Dakota' s transportation environment; 5. Describe a business model that could enable efficient intermodal transportation for North Dakota intermodal operators. Examining both the base case model and sensitivities applied to the base model allowed for examining today's transportation environment and its potential. The results are reported in chapter five and applied to game theory. Incorporating the results to game theory allows development of a business model focused on subsidizing network operators to cooperate and reposition containers to service North Dakota. A linear programming model was developed to analyze logistical costs and payoffs associated with varying game alternatives. Data collected was analyzed using GAMS software to determine the cost minimizing solutions for exporters across the eight regions of North Dakota. Base model results indicate hard IP producers in North Dakota realize minimized costs by draying containers to the intermodal terminals of Saskatoon, Winnipeg, or Minneapolis. Sensitivities were applied to answer "what if" questions related to North Dakota transportation. The first sensitivity test allows for cost of shipping by bulk to the point of export versus required loading of containers at the site of production. Results show that for the three regions encompassing the eastern border and southeast comer of North Dakota (ND4, ND7 and ND8), stuffing containers at the site of production remains the cost minimizing solution. Sensitivity accounts for hard IP shipments and includes the Minot intermodal terminal. Results show that North Dakota realizes the Minot terminal as an important shipping option. The expanded model and final sensitivity accounts for the 21 metric tons per TEU limitation placed on a containers load weight moving by rail. The addition of this parameter slightly changed model results to reflect a loss of market share to the Minot terminal. Sensitivities were then conducted on the expanded model. These sensitivities display a shift in shipping patterns due to the cost of repositioning empty containers, container stuffing fees, and Minot`s terminal handling fee.

The Gould southwestern railroad system, 1878-1892

Zedlitz, Gerald Otto 01 January 1969 (has links)
Few men in the history of American business have been more controversial than Jay Gould. His accomplishments and failures left an indelible mark on United States business life. Although much has been written about Gould's life and business career, no study has related a technical analysis of the Southwestern rail stock price movements to his railroad ventures in the Southwestern United States. It is the purpose of this study to present a historical review of Gould's acquisitions in the southwest and to explore the implications of these ventures on the public and business sectors of the American economy. Utilizing stock price changes, the thesis attempts to explain more fully the relationship of Gould's security trading practices to his Southwestern railroad system. Several technical patterns and interpretations are analyzed and compared for an overall view of his activities. Preliminary investigation by this thesis indicates a high degree of correlation between the stock price changes and Gould's formation of the South-western railroad system. Analysis of the moral implications of Gould's business ventures does not come within the scope of this study. In organizing the thesis, it was necessary to include only Gould's Southwestern rail activities and his associated railroad investments. Although many of Gould's purchases were simultaneous, the study analyzes each acquisition separately in hope of avoiding confusion. Sources containing business information on Jay Gould's activities included Railway Review and Railway Gazette, which provide many details on southwestern railroad events. Newspapers such as the St. Louis Evening Chronicle, the Austin Daily Democratic Statesman, and the Denver Tribune were used to portray Gould in view of his contemporaries. Government publications were valuable especially in the areas of public policy and its relationship to the railroads. The Commercial and Financial Chronicle was a valuable tool, as were the leading New York newspapers of the day. Secondary sources were utilized when other information was not available or obtainable. In the last chapters, the study evaluates a comparable modern railway problem and relates this analysis to Gould and his activities in the Southwest. Hopefully, the result will be a greater understanding of Jay Gould's achievement and failures.
