A comparative study of trends in dental assistant utilization among dentists in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts

LeGallee, Bunny L. January 1985 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.)--Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, 1985 (Dental Public Health). / Includes bibliographical references: (leaves 70-74). / The purpose of this study was to determine whether the changes currently evolving in the delivery of dental care are affecting the way in which dental assistants are being utilized and, if so, whether the training offered in accredited dental assisting programs is meeting the needs and demands of the system. It was intended that the results of this study would be useful in determining future directions for dental assisting as a career, and in invoking changes in dental assisting education to improve satisfaction of both dentists and dental assistants. The research was conducted via survey questionnaires which were mailed to 300 randomly selected dentists in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts. The survey items focused on the dentists’ backgrounds and attitudes toward dental assistant utilization; numbers and credentials of dental assistants employed; and current utilization patterns of dental assistants. The results were summarized with descriptive statistics, frequencies and distributions, and analyzed using chi-square and tests of correlation. It appeared that changes in dental education and in modes of delivery of dental services had little effect on patterns of dental assistant utilization and, moreover, that the emphasis of the A.D.A. accreditation standards for dental assisting education programs was congruent with the demands of the surveyed dental practitioners. It was further apparent that although dentists had positive attitudes toward dental assistant utilization, they appeared to be unaware of the status of state regulations governing utilization of dental auxiliaries, and generally underutilize the skills of trained assistants. This paper addresses these and other issues of concern to dental assistants, dental assisting educators and dentists. The results of this study provide a foundation for many areas of future research.

With objective to evaluate the production of 'Grand Rapids' lettuce from organic and conventional seeds under organic fertilization with bovine manure vermicompost in polyethylene greenhouse, based on the recommendation indexes of the Comissão de Química e Fertilidade do Solo - RS / SC (2016) was developed an experiment in the year 2016 in the period from 07/26/2016 to 08/30/2016, a deposit of data of the transplant of the seedlings. A polyethylene greenhouse, model chapel, was used in the experimental area of the Faculdade de Agronomia Eliseu Maciel, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Capão do Leão Campus, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A 'Grand Rapids' cultivar was chosen, using two types of seeds: organic seed (S1) and conventional seed (S2), submitted to bovinemanure vermicompost (BV) fertilization in the previous way: T1 (0,5 ROLAS VB); T2 (1,0 ROLAS VB) and T3 (1,5 ROLAS VB). The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design. The variables studied were: above ground biomass fresh and dry, fresh and dry root phytomass, plant diameter, leaf area, leaf number, root length, root density, shoot root system and macronutrients, crosses of laboratorial efforts. The bovine manure vermicompost used as fertilizer favors the adequate production of the 'Grand Rapids' lettuce crop, when applying the 1.0 and 1.5 times the recommendation of the Comissão de Fertilidade do Solo RS/SC (2004). Regardless of the origin of the 'Grand Rapids' lettuce seed, the response regarding fertilizer application with bovine manure vermicompost was satisfactory, as it met the recommendation for plant diameter and leaf area. The NO3 - content in 'Grand Rapids' lettuce leaves with the application of bovine vermicompost, is within the FAO standards for hardwood accumulation. The residual effect of bovine manure vermicompost on the soil, after harvesting the 'Grand Rapids' lettuce, allows the continuation of a next crop without the addition of fertilizer. The behavior of the 'Grand Rapids' cultivar with organic and conventional seeds under organic fertilization is similar.

Sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Granite Wash: Contact Rapids and Keg River Sandstone (Red Earth area)

Balshaw, Kevin Ewart 11 1900 (has links)
The Granite Wash is comprised of diachronous, Cambrian to Devonian sandstone deposits, which include the Devonian Contact Rapids and Keg River sandstones of which this study will focus. Prolific oil production from the Granite Wash has fueled exploration since the 1950s and as a result substantial core and wireline data is available. Mapping of the Precambrian subcrop suggests that palaeo-highs, known as inselbergs, strongly influenced sedimentation transport, volume, rate, and ultimately preservation after marine transgression. Several distinct surfaces identified from wireline data and cores indicate an overall marine transgression throughout Keg River time. The facies observed represent continental, shallow marine and sabkha environments and a climatic shift from arid to semi-arid to arid. This detailed sedimentological and stratigraphic study provided the depositional framework that allowed for palaeogeographic maps to be constructed.

Bedrock-controlled Fluvial Geomorphology and the Hydraulics of Rapids on the Colorado River

Magirl, Christopher Sean January 2006 (has links)
The fluvial geomorphology of the Colorado River cutting across the Colorado Plateau in the western United States is bedrock controlled and largely governed by rapids. Rapids on the Colorado River control the water-surface profile and influence the bathymetry, the storage of sand, and the aquatic ecology. Despite their importance, little data on the hydraulics, sediment transport, and long-term stability of rapids have been collected. By comparing water-surface profiles, the average rate of aggradation at the head of 91 rapids in Grand Canyon between 1923 and 2000 was calculated to be 0.26 ± 0.15 m. In addition, while in 1923, 50% of the cumulative drop through the river corridor occurred in just 9% of the distance, by 2000, the cumulative drop over the same distance increased to 66%. A new hydraulic model, incorporating one-dimensional step-backwater theory, was constructed for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. The model includes 2,690 cross sections and simulates discharge up to 5,600 m³/s, offering the opportunity to simulate large floods, rare under the current regulated flow regime. Flow velocities were measured directly in rapids using three separate flow measurement instruments. An acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) was used to measure velocity in five Grand Canyon rapids. While the instrument was able to measure velocity in three dimensions up to 3.0 m/s, limitations rendered data unusable for flow above 3.0 m/s. An acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) was used to measure the flow field in rapids throughout the water column in Cataract Canyon. The peak average velocity measured by the ADCP was roughly 4.0 m/s. Similarly, average flow velocity of 5.2 m/s was measured in a Cataract Canyon rapid using a pitot-static tube. The pitot-static tube measured instantaneous flow velocities up to 6.5 m/s, one of the fastest velocity measurements made in a river. Using the combination of the ADCP and pitot-static tube, the flow structure and nature of turbulence within rapids were analyzed. Finally, techniques were developed to enable the measurement and construction of detailed water surface, shoreline, and bathymetric maps directly in rapids on the Colorado River.

Saints of Grand Rapids

Derks, Mark Henry 03 May 2012 (has links)
These stories examine the lives of working class people in light of the current economic and social climate. They address and attempt to empathize with the despair and disillusionment many working class Americans express in response to their economic and social realities, and the stories attempt to walk a non-judgmental line regarding the attitudes these characters espouse. Instead of judging the characters or championing a particular moral stance, the pieces attempt to present individuals faced with major failures: child abandonment, guilt over preventable death, overriding selfishness, racism, and shame regarding social status. These failures of character or morality echo the larger failings, as the characters perceive them, of their time and place. Within this worldview of disillusionment and despair, many of the characters in these stories choose to struggle toward self-betterment—not economic or social betterment per se, but individual betterment, a reckoning with themselves and their failures that necessarily reflects and interacts with the world they inhabit. These are stories rooted in the Midwest and its rust-belt inhabitants, but for all their contemporary socio-economic concerns, the stories are first and foremost concerned with the individual and representing each individual portrayed accurately and honestly. / Master of Fine Arts
