Sunlight Upon a Dark Sky - Haiti's Urban Poor Responds to Socio-Political and Socio-Cultural Conflicts: A Case Study of the Grande Ravine Community Human Rights Council

Dimmett, Deborah Lynn January 2010 (has links)
This case study investigates the organizational characteristics of a Haitiangrassroots community human rights council (CHRC) that emerged as a response to threepolitically motivated massacres. The impromptu grassroots response of this poor urbancommunity is at the core of the following research question investigated in this study:What organizational characteristics influence the efforts made by the Grande RavineCommunity Human Rights Council to resolve socio-cultural and socio-political conflicts? One of the problems encountered was the suspicion by armed groups believing that thepresident of the organization was informing the police and the United Nationspeacekeepers about their activities. The complex dynamics of the Grande Ravineneighborhood lead to additional questions about building community capacity. Thisraised the possibility of removing the CHRC as an organization that monitors humanrights and expanding its role to include teaching about human rights and theresponsibilities that go with protecting them. A question for further study would bewhether or not a community-based human rights group can make a positive difference inresolving and diminishing socio-cultural and socio-political conflicts in similarneighborhoods.

Estimation of Ravine Sediment Production and Sediment Dynamics in the Lower Le Sueur River Watershed, Minnesota

Azmera, Luam A 12 November 2009 (has links)
This study focuses on quantifying explicitly the sediment budget of deeply incised ravines in the lower Le Sueur River watershed, in southern Minnesota. High-rate-gully-erosion equations along with the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) were implemented in a numerical modeling approach that is based on a time-integration of the sediment balance equations. The model estimates the rates of ravine width and depth change and the amount of sediment periodically flushing from the ravines. Components of the sediment budget of the ravines were simulated with the model and results suggest that the ravine walls are the major sediment source in the ravines. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the erodibility coefficients of the gully bed and wall, the local slope angle and the Manning’s coefficient are the key parameters controlling the rate of sediment production. Recommendations to guide further monitoring efforts in the watershed and increased detail modeling approaches are highlighted as a result of this modeling effort.

“Speaking With” the Ravine: Representation and Memory in Five Cultural Productions of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles

Germeck, Karl 01 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the rich and layered intertextual relationship between five artisticrepresentations of the razed neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles, and its former residents. These works include Seattle-based photographer Don Normark’s 1999 photography collection Chávez Ravine, 1949: A Los Angeles Story; the full-length dramatic play Chavez Ravine, written and first performed by Los Angeles-based Chicano comedy troupe Culture Clash in 2003; Jordan Mechner’s 2004 short documentary film Chávez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story; Ry Cooder’s musical album Chávez Ravine: A Record by Ry Cooder; and lastly, high school history teacher Ken Aven’s 2006 debut novel, Chavez Ravine Echoes. Together, these five productions make up a case study that engages with the theoretical debate about privileged groups speaking for, or on behalf of, underrepresented groups. This analysis emphasizes a process of representation that is shared and driven by dialogue between the artists of these productions and the place and people they represent. Through the inclusion of resident involvement in the production process and the weaving of narrative elements from both Mexican American and dominant cultural traditions, these projects promote the Ravine’s cultural wealth and visibility within a popular culture dominated by the symbol of Dodger Stadium. This study, through close readings and textual analysis, demonstrates how these works, considered together, open up spaces for cross-cultural discussions about Chavez Ravine and the various roles it plays within U.S. cultural history. More importantly, these five representations of Chavez Ravine figuratively practice and promote a “speaking to and with” model of intercultural communication between dominant and minority cultures.

Slope processes and strength of material in silt rich ravines in Säterdalen, Sweden

Westrin, Pontus, Melin, Nils January 2015 (has links)
Slope processes are important to understand if we are to protect fragile environments. Every year slope development in weak soils put nearby infrastructure in risk zones of sliding and ravine erosion takes away field areal from farmers as they grow even larger. Many methods for doing a risk analysis of a slope and its soil are complicated and require a lot of equipment. A simple way to do a slope investigation is explained in this report, along with its advantages and disadvantages. The authors construct a shear ring, an apparatus to measure peak shear stress of soils before fracturing. LIDAR scanning of two small ravines are also made to illustrate how laser scanning can be used to accurately measure denudation in slopes. The results vary, the shear ring is mostly a success aside from errors caused by difficulty in taking representative samples and disturbance. Some of the laboratory work made to determine material properties fail at giving good results, often a result of bad samples or disturbance in the tests. The LIDAR is determined to be a good instrument when working with slope development.

Contenção de processos erosivos resultantes de acidente ambiental na Serra da Mantiqueira, SP / Containment of erosion processes resulting from environmental accidents in the Serra da Mantiqueira, SP.

Admilson Clayton Barbosa 31 March 2009 (has links)
This work was carried out in southern escarpment of the Serra Mantiqueira, city of Pindamonhangaba within an area adjacent to the Plateau of Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo state, Brazil, and claimed as a result to reverse environmental damage caused by the rupture of an adductor of water located at 1700 m altitude. This accident resulted in the formation of a scar in the hillside forest, with its removal of soil and vegetation. To reverse the erosion processes created at the site a new technique was developed using four barriers formed by seedlings of Bambusa mutiplex (Lour.) in order to divert the waters and promote the regeneration of vegetation. For containment of two ravines, called lower and higher, stalks of bamboo (Bambusa sp.) were installed on the walls of the ravines with intercropped planting of seedlings B. multiplex. The project was monitored for 18 months and its evaluation was done through observations of field and fill in sheet. Subsequently, the data were applied to an adaptation of the Leopold Matrix composed of five monitored aspects: erosion, regeneration of vegetation, the success of bamboo plantation, preservation of the structures and functionality, which sought to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions with the bamboo. The result of the classification matrix enabled the qualitative and quantitative interventions, resulting in five levels of classification. The barriers I, II and IV were classified as being of very high efficiency, and the Barrier III as a high efficiency. The containment of the higher ravine was classified as medium average efficiency, the lower, as a very high efficiency.

Buried Under Dodger Blue: Racial Rhetorical Criticism, Public Memory, and Fernandomania

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: In 1981, Fernando Valenzuela had one of the most unlikely rookie seasons for theLos Angeles Dodgers. Originally from a rural farm town in northern Mexico, he left an enduring legacy that persists within Mexican/American and Latinx fans and communities throughout Los Angeles. Not only did Fernando help the Dodgers capture the World Series, he captured the hearts of the people and the communities who had shunned the Dodgers for decades. This act of protest was a response to the destruction of three neighborhoods—La Paloma, Palo Verde, and Bishop—that were destroyed amid a protracted legal battle with the city of Los Angeles throughout the 1950’s that culminated in coercion, violence, and a new baseball stadium. This project intends to remember the neighborhoods of La Paloma, Palo Verde, and Bishop and those who lost their homes alongside the public memory of Fernando Valenzuela’s unlikely rookie season, dubbed Fernandomania, and his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I illumine how the public memories of Fernandomania, a moment of communitas, and Fernando Valenzuela have facilitated the public forgetting of La Loma, Palo Verde, and Bishop by making Chavez Ravine into a novel public idiom for American baseball rather than a site of violence and resistance. In the process of facilitating the public forgetting of these neighborhoods, the sports media commits a pernicious discursive violence upon Fernando Valenzuela’s hyper-visible brown body that reveals the workings of a white racial frame designed to protect American baseball’s white masculine ideology. Ultimately, the Los Angeles Dodgers benefit from Fernando’s unmistakably cultural and racial Mexican identity—the source of his otherization and incongruity with American baseball’s white heroism—as the transgressions of the past are slowly forgotten. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2020

Archaeological Evidences of the Formative Period in Canto Grande’s Ravine, Lower Rímac Valley / Evidencias arqueológicas del Periodo Formativo en la quebrada de Canto Grande, valle bajo del Rímac

Abanto, Julio 10 April 2018 (has links)
In this paper we present the existence of Formative Period settlements and archaeological materials in a ravine near to the city of Lima, capital of Perú. Through comparatives analysis we have related these elements with data from others areas of Lima (Ancón, Huachipa, Tablada de Lurín, etc.), and we have reconstructed the early occupational landscape in this area of the Rímac Valley, and the use of the space and the settlement area in the lower zone that included different structures and a large worship zone that included a sanctuary in the upper ground.
