Pseudo-concurrent programming for real-time process control applications

Sinclair, James Carter January 1982 (has links)
The structure of an RS232 monitor intended for use in online system maintenance of real-time, industrial process control systems is presented. The monitor is written in PLM86 for use in an Intel 8086 based system in which system software is organized into a set of foreground interrupts and an infinite background loop. The monitor, which resides in the background loop, utilizes a programming technique referred to as psuedo-concurrent programming to eliminate the lockout problem associated with the background loop structure. The psuedo-concurrent technique is explained. Maintenance procedures are described and possible implementations utilizing the monitor are suggested. / Master of Science

Median and morphological filtering of images in real time using an FPGA-based custom computing platform

Tarmaster, Adit 25 April 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes the design and implementation of real-time image-processing tasks on a custom computing platform called Splash-2. The tasks that have been implemented are image histogram generation, median filtering using 3X3 neighborhoods, and morphological dilation and erosion. These problems are computationally intensive, involving large amounts of data. The problems are especially difficult when the images need to be processed at real-time rates, typically 30 frames per second. Splash-2 is a reconfigurable FFPGA-based attached processor featuring several programmable processing elements and programmable communication paths. Although not designed specifically for image-processing applications, it possesses architectural properties that make it well suited for high speed computations and data transfer rates that are characteristic of this class of problems. This thesis discusses the design process which has been used to map the tasks to Splash-2, and presents results which demonstrate the effectiveness of custom computing platforms for high performance image processing. / Master of Science

Real time multitasking system application incorporating VRTX

Misra, Pradyumna Kumar 12 March 2013 (has links)
The real time multitasking systems are becoming increasingly popular for control and monitoring functions typically encountered in industry as well as day to day life. They have to manage adequately many concurrent processes or tasks, each of which is sequential in nature. The concurrency is achieved by running asynchronous tasks at different speeds and providing for communication and synchronization. In order to fully exploit the power and capabilities of today's sophisticated microprocessors and to provide a programming methodology for structuring real time applications a real time multitasking operating system becomes critical. / Master of Science

New architecture for heterogeneous real-time simulation

Mathure, Mandar Anil 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates a new architecture for modeling and simulating complex distributed real-time systems. Modeling adequately a large distributed real time system may involve, due to its complexity, several different theoretical vehicles such as queuing theory, finite state machines, and others. Currently there are no software tools, which would offer combining such heterogeneous features into a single comprehensive simulation environment. This study involves integrating 3 tools, SES/workbench, an offline simulator using queuing theory as its modeling discipline, ObjecTime as a real-time simulator based on finite state machines as its modeling discipline, and VxWorks real-time kernel used for free modeling in the VMEbus environment. We developed an architecture, which connects all 3 simulators into an integrated system, in which parameters and simulation results can be freely exchanged between tools. In addition, the system is enhanced by a web-based interface, which can be used to provide input and obtain output of the entire system and help in distributing the simulation over the Internet. The new architecture was extensively tested and applied to a large-scale distributed embedded simulation in a military environment.

NETWORK DATA ACQUISITION AND PLAYBACK OF MULTIMEDIA DATA

Portnoy, Michael, Yang, Hsueh-Szu 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / Traditional data acquisition systems have relied on physical connections between data sources and data receivers to handle the routing of acquired data streams. However, these systems grow exponentially in complexity as the number of data sources and receivers increases. New techniques are needed to address the ever increasing complexity of data acquisition. Furthermore, more advanced mechanisms are needed that move past the limitations of traditional data models that connect each data source to exactly one data receiver. This paper presents a software framework for the playback of multiplexed data acquired from a network acquisition system. This framework uses multicast technologies to connect data sources with multiple data receivers. The network acquisition system is briefly introduced before the software framework is discussed. Both the challenges and advantages involved with creating such a system are presented. Finally, this framework is applied to an aviation telemetry example.

A NEW 1553 ALL-BUS INSTRUMENTATION MONITOR

Berdugo, Albert, Ricker, William G. 11 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 29-November 02, 1990 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Increased data throughput demands in military and avionics systems has led to the development of an advanced, All-Bus MIL-STD-1553 Instrumentation Monitor. This paper discusses an airborne unit which acquires the information from up to 8 dual-redundant buses, and formats the data for telemetry, recording or real-time analysis according to the requirements of IRIG-106-86, Chapter 8. The ALBUS-1553 acquires all or selected 1553 messages which are formatted into IRIG-compatible serial data stream outputs. Data is time tagged to microsecond resolution. The unit selectively transmits entire or partial 1553 messages under program control. This results in reduced transmission bandwidth if prior knowledge of 1553 traffic is known. The ALBUS also encodes analog voice inputs, discrete userword inputs and multiplexed analog (overhead) inputs. The unit is provided in a ruggedized airborne housing utilizing standard ATR packaging,

STUDY ON HIGH-RATE TELEMETRY DATA REAL-TIME PROCESSING TECHNIQUES

Chun, Yang, Hongling, Yang, Jie, Zhou 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Owing to rapid development of PC industry, personal computer has been surprisingly improved on reliability and speed and it has been applied to many fields, such as aerospace, satellite and telemetry applications. As we all known, two aspects decide how fast the PC-based data acquisition can be reached. One aspect is CPU processing and the other is I/O bandwidth. Indeed, the first aspect has changed increasingly insignificant because the frequency of CPU has exceeded 700MHz which can satisfy fully the need of high rate data processing. So I/O bandwidth is the only key factor of the high rate PC-based data acquisition and we must adopt efficient data buffer techniques to satisfy the demand of telemetry data entry. This paper presents a buffered data channel which use memory mapping, EPLD and Dual-Port SRAM techniques. The operation platform of this design is WINDOWS95/98 and the software includes device driver and real-time processing routines.

NEXT GENERATION DATA VISUALIZATION AND ANALYSIS FOR SATELLITE, NETWORK, AND GROUND STATION OPERATIONS

Harrison, Irving 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Recent years have seen a sharp rise in the size of satellite constellations. The monitoring and analysis tools in use today, however, were developed for smaller constellations and are ill-equipped to handle the increased volume of telemetry data. A new technology that can accommodate vast quantities of data is 3-D visualization. Data is abstracted to show the degree to which it deviates from normal, allowing an analyst to absorb the status of thousands of parameters in a single glance. Trend alarms notify the user of dangerous trends before data exceeds normal limits. Used appropriately, 3-D visualization can extend the life of a satellite by ten to twenty percent.

A generic predictive information system for resource planning and optimisation

Tavakoli, Siamak January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this research work is to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a quick response decision platform for middle management in industry. It utilises the strengths of current, but more importantly creates a leap forward in the theory and practice of Supervisory and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and Discrete Event Simulation and Modelling (DESM). The proposed research platform uses real-time data and creates an automatic platform for real-time and predictive system analysis, giving current and ahead of time information on the performance of the system in an efficient manner. Data acquisition as the backend connection of data integration system to the shop floor faces both hardware and software challenges for coping with large scale real-time data collection. Limited scope of SCADA systems does not make them suitable candidates for this. Cost effectiveness, complexity, and efficiency-orientation of proprietary solutions leave space for more challenge. A Flexible Data Input Layer Architecture (FDILA) is proposed to address generic data integration platform so a multitude of data sources can be connected to the data processing unit. The efficiency of the proposed integration architecture lies in decentralising and distributing services between different layers. A novel Sensitivity Analysis (SA) method called EvenTracker is proposed as an effective tool to measure the importance and priority of inputs to the system. The EvenTracker method is introduced to deal with the complexity systems in real-time. The approach takes advantage of event-based definition of data involved in process flow. The underpinning logic behind EvenTracker SA method is capturing the cause-effect relationships between triggers (input variables) and events (output variables) at a specified period of time determined by an expert. The approach does not require estimating data distribution of any kind. Neither the performance model requires execution beyond the real-time. The proposed EvenTracker sensitivity analysis method has the lowest computational complexity compared with other popular sensitivity analysis methods. For proof of concept, a three tier data integration system was designed and developed by using National Instruments’ LabVIEW programming language, Rockwell Automation’s Arena simulation and modelling software, and OPC data communication software. A laboratory-based conveyor system with 29 sensors was installed to simulate a typical shop floor production line. In addition, EvenTracker SA method has been implemented on the data extracted from 28 sensors of one manufacturing line in a real factory. The experiment has resulted 14% of the input variables to be unimportant for evaluation of model outputs. The method proved a time efficiency gain of 52% on the analysis of filtered system when unimportant input variables were not sampled anymore. The EvenTracker SA method compared to Entropy-based SA technique, as the only other method that can be used for real-time purposes, is quicker, more accurate and less computationally burdensome. Additionally, theoretic estimation of computational complexity of SA methods based on both structural complexity and energy-time analysis resulted in favour of the efficiency of the proposed EvenTracker SA method. Both laboratory and factory-based experiments demonstrated flexibility and efficiency of the proposed solution.
