The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate, through analysis of the current Canadian Copyright Act and related cases, how the rapid development of Internet technology has challenged the legal protection of musical works under Canadian copyright legislation and jurisprudence. Canadian government and courts have begun contemplating these issues and attempted to formulate constitutional reform policies and effective measures for Canada. These initiatives related to copyright protection of musical works reflect a sophisticated analysis of each participant involved in music transmission through the Internet and are unique in this way. More flexible business mechanisms may contribute towards the achievement of a delicate balance between all the parties involved under the copyright umbrella.

The purpose of this creative project was to provide a way for intermedia artists to present their artwork. The creative project is a videotape of the author's works, which are separated into four categories: computer images, two-dimensional animation, photographs and three-dimensional animation. Emphasis was placed on unifying artwork from different mediums. Digital editing effects were used to help distinguish between the various artwork sections. This paper reviews the process of video production that was used to create the creative portion of the thesis project. During this process, I experienced creative art theory, creative methods, and new technology applications. For the production of the thesis, I used a high definition digital video camera to illustrate the conflict and fusion between the East and West on the level of cultural mythology. This study examines the possibility of creating original video-based content for the video-enabled iPod that was released in October 2005. Current trends show that existing content created for conventional media like television, cinema and computers are simply being ported over to this new medium. However, when this project began, none of the production studios are concentrating on creating content specifically for this medium, which has its own unique properties like portability, screen size and the ability to easily start and pause content as required. The purpose of this project is to prove that such medium-specific content can be created and made financially viable for the creators. Further, this hypothesis is put to the test by presenting it to a group of Ball State University students and their responses are examined in detail. / Department of Telecommunications

Higher Sites has been designed as a fully functioning business. The appendix of this creative project paper includes Higher Sites' full business plan. The business plan includes projected revenue and profit for the next three years.Higher Sites 101 is a two-part DVD set designed to familiarize new Higher Sites employees with the company. Disc I explains the services that Higher Sites offers to adoptive parents. It also walks the viewer through the process of creating adoption videos using the Higher Sites method. Example videos are included. Disc II is a data DVD that includes full-screen QuickTime movies. The movies demonstrate to the viewer how to perform specific tasks in Final Cut Pro, iDVD and DVD Studio Pro. It is necessary for the viewer to watch these QuickTime movies on a monitor that is 21 inches or larger. / Department of Telecommunications

This thesis explores how the study of culture can benefit from Western technology by reviewing anthropological theoretical and methodological processes and issues concerning reciprocity between the ethnographers and research subjects. In this case I am exploring the process of digitizing and dissemination of 400 hours of Kiowa song recordings. New digitizing equipment has made audio preservation and access relatively easy and affordable. These issues are most critical to groups like the Kiowa whose songs I have already started digitizing. In this thesis I closely examine existing collaborative theory and methodology in order to demonstrate the balance that can and should be maintained when using technology to preserve traditional music. In general, applying audio technology to an anthropological problem can enhance or inhibit the ethnographic process. My thesis focuses on how audio technology can contribute to this process without inhibiting, complicating, or distorting the way ethnomusicologists, folklorists, and anthropologists practice go about recording sound. / Department of Anthropology

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is accompanied by a significant amount of beta β-band (11Hz-30Hz) neuronal and local field potential (LFP) oscillatory activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The aim of this study was to measure the spatial extent of β coherent activity in the STN and coherence between STN-SNr in PD patients OFF levodopa by systematically varying the vertical distance between two microelectrodes. We found significant β-LFP coherence across the dorsoventral extent of STN. Spatially extended beta LFP was positively correlated with the mUPDRS scores of the PD patients in the OFF state. Additionally, a significant coherence was found between β-LFPs in dorsal STN and dorsal SNr. These data suggest that the whole STN may be entrained within the β band in PD patients OFF meds. The finding of coherence between STN and SNr suggests that β oscillations synchronize both the input and output nuclei of the basal ganglia.
