Design and Scale-Up of Production Scale Stirred Tank FermentorsDavis, Ryan Z. 01 May 2010 (has links)
In the bio/pharmaceutical industry, fermentation is extremely important in pharmaceutical development, and in microbial research. However, new fermentor designs are needed to improve production and reduce costs of complex systems such as cultivation of mammalian cells and genetically engineered micro-organisms. Traditionally, stirred tank design is driven by the oxygen transfer capability needed to achieve cell growth. However, design methodologies available for stirred tank fermentors are insufficient and many times contain errors. The aim of this research is to improve the design of production scale stirred tank fermentors through the development of dimensionless correlations and by providing information on aspects of fermentor tanks that can aid in oxygen mass transfer. This was accomplished through four key areas. Empirical studies were used to quantify the mass transfer capabilities of several different reactors. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to assess the impact of certain baffle and impeller geometries. Correction schemes were developed and applied to the experimental data. Dimensionless correlations were created from corrected experimental data to act as a guide for future production scale fermentor design. The methods for correcting experimental data developed in this research have proven to be accurate and useful. Furthermore, the correlations found from the corrected experimental data in this study are of great benefit in the design of production scale stirred tank fermentors. However, when designing a stirred tank fermentor of a different size, further experimentation should be performed to refine the correlations presented.

Analysis and Field Oriented Control of a Single-sided Permanent-magnet Axial-flux Motor with Center PoleLee, Shih-Chia 27 July 2005 (has links)
This thesis presents a systematic scheme to design the optimal efficiency operations and axial force control of a single-sided permanent-magnet axial-flux motor with center pole (SPAMC) through the detailed mathematical model and operational analysis. According to the rotating magnetic field theory combining with the recoil line characteristics of permanent magnet and the magnetic equivalent circuit, appropriate projection of the stator currents to achieve the optimal efficiency operations and axial force control can be realized. From these evaluations, a feasible operational guidance for SPAMC field oriented control (FOC) framework can be successfully developed. Finally, based on the proposed operational scheme, a DSP-based drive system has been successfully implemented, and the optimal efficiency operations and axial force control objectives can be achieved.

The Physical Underpinning of Security Proofs for Quantum Key DistributionBoileau, Jean Christian 25 September 2007 (has links)
The dawn of quantum technology unveils a plethora of new possibilities and challenges in the world of information technology, one of which is the quest for secure information transmission. A breakthrough in classical algorithm or the development of a quantum computer could threaten the security of messages encoded using public key cryptosystems based on one-way function such as RSA. Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers an unconditionally secure alternative to such schemes, even in the advent of a quantum computer, as it does not rely on mathematical or technological assumptions, but rather on the universality of the laws of quantum mechanics.
Physical concepts associated with quantum mechanics, like the uncertainty principle or entanglement, paved the way to the first successful security proof for QKD. Ever since, further development in security proofs for QKD has been remarkable. But the connection between entanglement distillation and the uncertainty principle has remained hidden under a pile of mathematical burden. Our main goal is to dig the physics out of the new advances in security proofs for QKD. By introducing an alternative definition of private state, which elaborates the ideas of Mayers and Koashi, we explain how the security of all QKD protocols follows from an entropic uncertainty principle. We show explicitly how privacy amplification protocol can be reduced to a private state distillation protocol constructed from our observations about the uncertainty principle. We also derive a generic security proof for one-way permutation-invariant QKD protocols. Considering collective attack, we achieve the same secret key generation rate as the Devetak-Winter's bound. Generalizing an observation from Kraus, Branciard and Renner, we have provided an improved version of the secret key generation rates by considering a different symmetrization. In certain situations, we argue that Azuma's inequality can simplify the security proof considerably, and we explain the implication, on the security level, of reducing a QKD protocol to an entanglement or a more general private state distillation protocol.
In a different direction, we introduce a QKD protocol with multiple-photon encoding that can be implemented without a shared reference frame. We prove the unconditional security of this protocol, and discuss some features of the efficiency of multiple-photon QKD schemes in general.

Two Dimensional Control of Transverse Flux Linear Switched-Reluctance MachineLin, Sheng-Yang 30 June 2000 (has links)
^¤å´£n¡G
The objective of this thesis is to simultaneously achieve two- dimensional control of transverse flux linear switched-reluctance machine (LSRM). Based on a theoretical matrix decomposition scheme, the overall structure of the control and drive systems can be constructed, and the associated man/machine interface can be designed. A fuzzy inference scheme has been selected to control the machine motion, while an orthogonal scheme has been developed to control the machine lift force. By realizing the control algorithm through digital signal processor (DSP), results show that the LSRM will be quite applicable for the desired operations of magnetic levitated vehicle.

Modeling and Control of Non-contacting Steel Plate Conveyance SystemLin, Sheng-Yang 25 August 2009 (has links)
A non-contacting steel plate conveyance system based on the linear induction motor scheme, which can provide lift and propulsive forces simultaneously, is proposed. It has the features of high power density, direct drive, simple mechanical structure, and being able to reduce the operation noise. A magnetic equivalent circuit method and electromagnetic theory incorporating with 3-D finite element analysis are involved to investigate the static and quasi-dynamic properties and confirm the electrical and mechanical designs. To realize the dynamic behavior and develop the closed-loop control, a proper stationary reference frame transformation of the system voltage equations is also introduced. By considering the practical operational environment, a fuzzy-based control structure integrated with remote optical measurement system has been established and implemented by a DSP-based controller combined with required peripheral circuits. The experimental results show the applicability of such control strategies. With the systematic procedures for design, analysis, and control provided in this dissertation, implementation feasibility of the proposed system can be conveniently demonstrated.

Previous issue date: 2017-10-31 / Não recebi financiamento / This study aims to study the Referential Framework of the Sorocaba municipal school network and aims to verify the extent to which the presence of Paulo Freire's Liberating Education, present in the Referential Framework of the Municipal Education Network of Sorocaba, is aligned with the teaching work of school units. It presents a qualitative approach and made use of some instruments of data collection and analysis. We used bibliographical research, documentary analysis structured in a Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA) approach and questionnaires with open and closed questions, which were applied to educators of the Sorocaba-SP municipal school system. Thus, we used the bibliographical research to present the Sorocaba Referential Framework and the process of its elaboration, as well as to highlight and characterize Paulo Freire's Liberating Education assumptions related to the fundamentals of the Frankfurt School and Critical Theory. Later, the conception of Education of Freire, the Liberating Education, was made explicit. The analysis of the Referential Framework was carried out through the discursive textual analysis, which culminated in the systematization of metatexts organized into two broad emerging categories: Extracts that refer to Freire and Extracts that do not refer to Freire. Beyond these broad categories, some subcategories emerged: dialogicity, awareness, education, problematization and emancipation. We also conducted a field survey through the application of questionnaires (with open and closed questions) to the teachers, in order to relate the analysis of the document to the interpretations of the reality experienced in the municipal schools of Sorocaba.

Is Nubia Plate Rigid? A Geodetic Study of the Relative Motion of Different Cratonic Areas within Africa.Njoroge, Mary Wambui 05 November 2015 (has links)
The Nubia plate is normally considered to be a rigid plate and as such used in the realization of terrestrial reference frame. Gondwana breakup plate reconstruction, the Cameroon volcanic line, seismicity, and the morphology of the Okavango rift zone (ORZ) suggest the presence of internal deformation within the Nubia plate. To test this hypothesis, six different reference frames were developed from the velocity field of three individual regions (West, Central and South), and of different combinations of them (West+Central, South+Central, and Nubia as a whole). The residual velocities with respect to these references frame help us understand the presence of the relative motion between the different regions thus the stability of the plate.
To realize the reference frames, all the publicly available global positioning system (GPS) data within the “stable” Nubia plate was processed. Given the small relative velocity, it is important to eliminate eventual biases in the analysis and to have good estimates of uncertainty of the observed velocities. For this reason, velocities were analyzed, and rate uncertainties computed using the Allan variance of rate (AVR) technique, accounting for colored noise.
Although geological and geophysical studies indicate the possibility of internal deformation within Nubia, the results of this study shows that the current GPS network is not capable to identify intraplate deformation and within uncertainties Nubia is a single plate. As final note, both the color of the noise and the amplitude of the annual signal of each time series as function of latitude and climatic region were analyzed. The study shows that the noise is approximately flicker for all the good stations independently of the location. On the contrary, the amplitude of the annual signal is strongly dependent on the climate of the regions.

Remote collaborative situations in industry involve new constraints for workers. In the context of using immersive virtual environments to collaborate, we set up a series of experiments focusing on the mutual comprehension, and more specifically on the process of sharing spatial information. Results of the first experiment showed the influence of one collaborator’s role on spatial statements. Guides and manipulators both used statements preferentially centered on manipulator’s action, which supports the least collaborative effort principle. Results of two experiments about spatial statements production allowed to point out that mental workload is modulated by the target position relative to the addressee. According to the target location, the speaker must operate or not cognitively costly mental transformations to take the addressee perspective. However this workload could be lowered by means of visual cues. The last experiment focused on the understanding of spatial statements. It showed that statements centered on the addressee are the easiest to understand when the task is also centered on the addressee. Some exocentered statements could also induce a lower mental workload but only in some conditions. Results are discussed in relation to the least collaborative effort principle and the spatial frames of reference theory. This work opens new leads to facilitate remote collaboration through virtual environments.
