Colour and light

This work explores how colour and light can be used as the prime design materials. They are investigated in unison in relation to spatiality. Colour is a way for us to understand and identify what we see, it is primary for how we interpret our surroundings. The aim is to explore colour, light and reflections, by the means of printing and dyeing of translucent materials, as an attempt to challenge the visual perception of the spectator and the experience of how spatiality is perceived. The project investigates how the boundaries of a textile can be questioned, for example where does a pattern begin and end? Does it only belong to the textile or can it transcend to it’s surroundings? The investigational process is experimental and explores combinations of colour and light in translucent materials, coloured through the techniques of heat transfer printing and dyeing. Swatches made are analysed in relation to each other and to light, with a focus on their visual performance. The final design examples discusses the idea of how textile, light and colour can be used to create, define and illuminate spatiality.

Este trabalho analisa a qualidade dos combustíveis derivados de petróleo através de suas propriedades acústicas, visando assim um monitoramento contínuo e instantâneo. Analisa a variação da impedância acústica da gasolina com acréscimo de vários componentes como: tolueno, óleo diesel, querosene e álcool anidro. Os resultados obtidos mostram uma variação significativa embora não linear da impedância acústica nos combustíveis derivados de petróleo com acréscimo de tais substâncias. / This work is related with research project focused on the development of low cost and robust quality monitoring equipment and methods, suitable for application in the production of petrochemical compounds. The main objective of this work is to assess the quality of automotive gasoline through the analysis of its acoustic properties. More specifically, pure gasoline\'s acoustic impedance (defined as the product between its density and the velocity of propagation of an acoustic wave) is analyzed with respect to the addition of toluene, kerosene, ethanol and diesel fuel. Results show that the acoustic impedance is sensitive to the addition of such components, although this relation may be non-linear in some cases.

So, Brazilian high school physics' books do not use mathematical full explanations. Many times these explanations are not known even by the high school teachers themselves. This is one of the reasons responsible for optics' lack of teaching skills in Brazilian educational system. To try to improve optical geometry teaching skills, this work proposes a mathematical theory applied to optics. To do that, this paper will detail basic concepts and theoretical explanations about mathematics. In resume, through our research, high school students would learn optical geometry without necessity to memorize physics' formulas / No Ensino Médio, quando se estuda a óptica geométrica, os professores de Física partem do pressuposto de que os alunos têm conhecimento e domínio dos conceitos básicos de geometria plana. Sendo assim, os livros de Física brasileiros não se prendem às demonstrações matemáticas. E esta é uma das razões pelas falhas no ensino da óptica no sistema Educacional Brasileiro. Muitas vezes essas demonstrações não são conhecidas nem mesmo pelos próprios professores, o que acreditamos ser uma das causas que dificulta o processo de ensino-aprendizagem da referida disciplina. Para tentar melhorar a aprendizagem no ensino, da óptica geométrica, este trabalho propõe aplicações para a óptica na teoria matemática. Para que isso aconteça, esta dissertação vem detalhar conceitos básicos e explanações sobre Matemática. Em resumo, para alcançar o objetivo, os alunos devem aprender óptica geométrica sem a necessidade de decorar fórmulas.

Transposição didática reflexiva : um olhar voltado para a prática pedagógica

Com esta pesquisa busquei constituir cenários para investigação para as aulas de matemática a partir da produção decorrente de pesquisas realizadas no Projeto de Iniciação Científica no Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Catarinense - Campus Rio do Sul. Para atingir os objetivos propostos por esta pesquisa, elaborei uma possibilidade educacional através da investigação de situações-problema da vida real, o que possibilitou identificar e significar os conceitos matemáticos em análise. A pesquisa foi embasada na teoria da Transposição Didática, discutida por Chevallard, com o intuito de auxiliar no trabalho de adaptar e transformar os conhecimentos produzidos em projetos de Iniciação Científica para um conhecimento que possa ser desenvolvido e produzido em sala de aula. Para que a transposição viesse acontecer num viés reflexivo procurei discutir a Educação Matemática Crítica, segundo Skovsmose. Provocando assim, uma reflexão sobre os conteúdos matemáticos envolvidos e a realidade inerente ao contexto. Ao procurar interagir os pressupostos teóricos com a realidade, atingi o objetivo da pesquisa e denominei este trabalho de Transposição Didática Reflexiva, com o intuito de unir as duas teorias num processo em que o saber a ser ensinado seja adaptado de forma a provocar reflexões, instituindo um cenário para investigação que propicie a participação do aluno no processo, provoque discussões e tomada de decisão, de modo a instigar o sujeito a ser transformador de sua própria realidade. Adotei na pesquisa uma abordagem qualitativa e para a coleta de dados desenvolvi a possibilidade educacional com as primeiras séries do Ensino Médio, observando as atitudes e considerações dos alunos perante as atividades propostas. Também apresento um quadro de limitações que permearam a proposta e como produto final, apresento três propostas de roteiros de aprendizagem que visam subsidiar outros professores que desejem desenvolver possibilidades educacionais, num viés que possibilite a constituição de um cenário para investigação de modo a instigar a curiosidade, o espírito investigativo e a criticidade dos sujeitos envolvidos no processo pedagógico. / Through this work I aimed at building investigative sceneries for the mathematics lessons from the current researches development carried through the Scientific Initiation Project of the Catarinense Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology - Campus of Rio do Sul. In order to reach the objectives set for this research, I developed an educational possibility through the investigation of real life problem-situations, which allowed me to identify and make sense of the analyzed mathematical concepts. The research was based on the Didactic Transposition theory - stated by Chevallard - aiming at getting support to the work in order to adapt and transform the knowledge produced with the projects of Scientific Initiation into a knowledge that can be developed and be produced into the classroom. So that the transposition happened into a reflective bias I tried to discuss the Critical Mathematical Education in accordance with Skovsmose, then bringing a reflection on the involved mathematical contents and the reality inherent to the context. When aiming at getting the interaction between the theoretical presuppositions and the reality, I reached the objective of this research and named this work as Reflective Didactic Transposition, intending to join the two theories into a process in which the knowledge to be taught be adapted to be reflectionsprovoking offering an investigation scenery that propitiates the participation of the student into the process and bringing discussions and decision taking, instigating the student - as an individual - to be the one who transforms his/her own reality. I used a qualitative approach in the research, and for the data collection I implemented the educational possibility at Junior High School classes, observing the attitudes and considerations of the students face the proposed activities as well. I also present a limitations figure that interfered with the proposal, and as the final result I present three learning approaches aimed at subsidizing other teachers who want to develop educational possibilities on a bias that turn into possible the constitution of a research scenery in order to instigate the curiosity, the investigative spirit and the critical view of the individuals involved in the pedagogical process.

Identifying and testing a conceptual model of the individual factors that influence patient safety learning for medical students

Introduction: The field of patient safety has increased in prominence over the last decade in response to information about the harm that occurs to patients in their journeys through healthcare. Healthcare education has also responded with the introduction of patient safety into many undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Understanding how to influence healthcare worker behaviours is key to these responses. A vital area is the influence that individual factors have on patient safety behaviours. A model of the influences on patient safety has been proposed (Jackson 2008). There is little research in undergraduates that explores this area. This thesis presents a longitudinal series of studies following a cohort of students through a medical curriculum to answer the primary question: which individual factors influence learning about patient safety? Additionally to this how could these factors be tested in relation to patient safety for medical students? Methods: The series of studies used the Medical Research Council’s framework for the evaluation of complex interventions together with Kirkpatrick’s framework to test a conceptual model of individual factors relevant to medical students in patient safety. Measurable outcomes relevant to medical students needed to be identified for each level in Kirkpatrick’s hierarchy. Study 1 used focus group data, when the students were in year 1 of the curriculum, to identify the conceptual model of the influences on patient safety for medical students at level Kirkpatrick’s level 1. Study 2 tested the conceptual model at level 2a when the cohort of students was in year 3. The study used validated questionnaires to test associations between reflective ability, and knowledge and attitudes to patient safety (Kember 1999, Patey 2007). Study 3 occurred in year five. This study identified associations between reflective ability, safe behaviours and error behaviours, in a standardised simulated ward setting. This was used to establish an association between individual factors and behaviours at level 3. Results: Pilot/Study 1: The interpretation of data from seven focus groups involving sixty students identified reflection and intellectual development as individual factors which influenced learning about error. Study 2: Sixty-one students participated and the questionnaires showed acceptable levels of reliability; Cronbach alpha for the reflection questionnaire was 0.71 and the patient safety questionnaire 0.90. The following significant associations were demonstrated: • Reflection and knowledge of actions to take for patient safety, correlation coefficient 0.44 (p=0.0002). • Critical reflection and intentions regarding patient safety, correlation coefficient 0.40 (p=0.0007) Study 3: Forty-eight students participated and the self-administered questionnaires showed acceptable levels of internal consistency, Cronbach alpha for reflection was 0.70 and for critical reflection was 0.78. The generalisability coefficient for the judgments about safe behaviour was 0.84 and for the error behaviours was 0.52. The following significant association was demonstrated: • Reflection and knowledge based errors, correlation coefficient r -0.30 (p=0.03) There were no significant correlations between critical reflection and error, and reflection and safe behaviour. Discussion: The results of these studies in a single cohort identify reflection as an individual factor that influences error behaviours as shown below add greater depth to Jackson’s model (Jackson 2008). The link between reflective thinking and a reduced rate of knowledge-based errors appears to be associated with thoughtful action with reflection rather than critical reflection transforming meaning frameworks. This series of studies identify an association between reflection and error and give a new perspective on the use of reflection in patient safety education.

2D signal processing: efficient models for spectral compressive sensing & single image reflection suppression

Two efficient models in two-dimensional signal processing are proposed in the thesis. The first model deals with large scale spectral compressive sensing in continuous domain, which aims to recover a 2D spectrally sparse signal from partially observed time samples. The signal is assumed to be a superposition of s complex sinusoids. We propose a semidefinite program for the 2D signal recovery problem. Our model is able to handle large scale 2D signals of size 500*500, whereas traditional approaches only handle signals of size around 20*20. The second model deals with the problem of single image reflection suppression. Removing the undesired reflection from images taken through glass is of great importance in computer vision. It serves as a means to enhance the image quality for aesthetic purposes as well as to preprocess images in machine learning and pattern recognition applications. We propose a convex model to suppress the reflection from a single input image. Our model implies a partial differential equation with gradient thresholding, which is solved efficiently using Discrete Cosine Transform. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that our approach achieves desirable reflection suppression results and dramatically reduces the execution time compared to the state of the art.

REAL-TIME IMAGE PATTERN SENSOR FOR WELD POOL PENETRATION THROUGH REFLECTION IN GTAW

In gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), weld pool surface contains crucial information for welding development. In this research, simulate skilled welders to control the welding process and determine the penetration stages based on the weld pool reaction. This study focuses on solving the uncertainty of the liquid weld pool in joint bases. The weld pool penetration process is highly depending on how the weld pool surface shape. To observe the weld pool, reflect the weld pool surface by the laser and image on the shield glass. The experiments show that the penetration can’t be determine by the reflecting grayness due to the variability of base metal. To control the joint bases diversity, fed a tip of the wire after the arc is established. Crate the new pattern of the weld pool penetration. Experiments verified the feasibility of this method.
