Entendendo que a instituição manicomial historicamente se configurou como um mecanismo de violência e de imposição de poder, consideramos necessário o processo de Reforma Psiquiátrica desenvolvido no país e especificamente no estado de Pernambuco, com objetivo de dar novos horizontes no que tange à saúde mental. Ressaltamos, nesse processo, a importância de modelos comunitários de atendimento, especialmente o Serviço Residencial Terapêutico que, no caso aqui estudado, foi determinante para possibilitar uma real melhora na qualidade de vida dos antigos pacientes. Enfatizamos ainda como é fundamental a constante vigilância das novas práticas advindas da Reforma para que o real objetivo não se perca e acabe se transformando em uma nova institucionalização. Portanto, entendemos que é necessária não apenas uma mudança na assistência, mas também a superação da lógica de exclusão, a construção de um projeto de aceitação da diferença e o respeito pelos comportamentos desviantes. / This research aims to trace back the deinstitutionalization process of José Alberto Maia Hospital - which used to be located in the municipality of Camaragibe between the years of 2002 and 2010 - and it also focus on what was subsequently developed at the hospital when former patients started to participate in therapeutical treatments until the year of 2015. Historically speaking, it is understood that psychiatric facilities became a system of violence and imposition of power and therefore, in order to open horizons in regards to mental health and achieve improvements, it is necessary that psychiatric clinics go through a countrywide revolution and more specifically a reform in the state of Pernambuco as well. We emphasize the importance of community models of care during this process, specially the Residential Therapeutic Service, also part of this research and which was crucial for a considerate improvement in the quality of life of former patients. We also highlight how constant monitoring of the new chosen practices is essential so that the real goal isn’t forgotten, which would end up leading to a new institutionalization. Therefore we believe that not only a change in the care methodology is necessary, but also overcoming the exclusion theory and building a mentality of acceptance and respect towards differences and deviant behaviors.
