Blood samples were collected from 87 sheep and genomic DNA was extracted using organic solvents. Reactions were performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for both markers. For CAST marker was used to PCR- RFLP technique with the MspI restriction enzyme, and the CAPN marker was used PCR-SSCP technique. The most frequent genotypes for the MM were cast (74%) and MN (25%) and the CAPN were AA (51.5%) and AB (17.5%). For sheep group undefined breed the AA genotype was significantly associated the following characteristics: hot carcass yield; Cold carcass yield; Brightness of the Longissimus dorsi; Semimembranosus shear strength and shear strength of the Longissimus dorsi, AB genotype was significantly associated to the characteristics of: hot carcass yield; Cold carcass yield; Brightness of the Longissimus dorsi; Water retention capacity of Semimembranosus and Semimembranosus shear force. Finally the AA genotype was significantly associated to yield hot carcass characteristics and capacity of the Longissimus dorsi water retention. For the Pantanal sheep Group AA genotype was significantly associated to water retention capacity of the Longissimus dorsi. The AB genotype was significantly associated to the characteristics of: color; Yellow pigments (b) of the Longissimus dorsi and ribeye area. For the Pantanal sheep MN genotype was significantly associated to the characteristics of: hot carcass weight and cold carcass weight. These associations indicate the productive potential of these animals. In this respect there is little information available serve new studies to understand the association of CAST and CAPN gene with carcass characteristics and meat quality, making the use of these markers an indispensable tool for selection and conservation of animals presented genes. / Objetivou-se verificar a presença dos polimorfismos genéticos do gene da Calpastatina (CAST) e do gene da Calpaína (CAPN) e analisar associações entre as características de carcaça e qualidade da carne de ovinos. Foram utilizados 47 ovinos pantaneiros e 40 ovinos sem raça propriamente definida. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas de 87 ovelhas e o DNA genômico foi extraído utilizando solventes orgânicos. Foi realizada reações da cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) para ambos marcadores. Para o marcador CAST foi utilizada a técnica PCR-RFLP com a enzima de restrição MspI, e para o Marcador CAPN foi utilizada a técnica de PCR-SSCP. Os genótipos para o CAST foram: MM, MN e NN; e para o CAPN foram: AA, AB, AC, BB. Os genótipos mais frequentes para o CAST foram MM (74%) e MN (25%) e para o CAPN foram AA (51,5%) e AB (17,5%). Para o grupo de ovinos Sem Raça Definida o genótipo AA mostrou associação significativa as seguintes características: Rendimento de carcaça quente; Rendimento de carcaça fria; Luminosidade do Longissimus dorsi; Força de cisalhamento do Semimembranosus e Força de cisalhamento do Longissimus dorsi, O genótipo AB apresentou associação significativa para as características de: Rendimento de carcaça quente; Rendimento de carcaça fria; Luminosidade do Longissimus dorsi; Capacidade de Retenção de água do Semimembranosus e Força de cisalhamento do Semimembranosus. Por fim o genótipo AC apresentou associação significativa para as características de Rendimento de carcaça quente e Capacidade de Retenção de água do Longissimus dorsi. Para o grupo de ovinos pantaneiros de genótipo AA mostrou associação significativa para Capacidade de Retenção de água do Longissimus dorsi. O genótipo AB apresentou associação significativa para as características de: Cor; Pigmentos amarelos (b) do Longissimus dorsi e Área de olho de lombo. Para os ovinos pantaneiros o genótipo MN apresentou associações significativas para as características de: Peso de carcaça quente e peso de carcaça fria. Essas associações indicam o potencial produtivo destes animais. Sobre este aspecto há poucas informações disponíveis novos estudos serviriam para compreender a associação do gene CAST e CAPN com características da carcaça e qualidade de carne, tornando o uso desses marcadores uma ferramenta indispensável pra seleção animal e conservação dos genes apresentados.
