Assignment (MDiv)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Christians differ on various issues, among others, on dogmatic and ethical cases. Specifically, they differ on the will of God. However, a question which confronts Christians, is that their own interpretation of the will of God, often differs from that of other Christians. Christians still differ about the baptism. Churches that accept the baptism of a child and churches that accept re-baptism, offer differ which baptism what the real baptism is. Even though people differ on which form of baptism the real one is, it is important to understand the true meaning attached to the baptism. It is also important that a person has a good attitude when they differ from others about baptism. Toleration and embracement can help one to settle difference about baptism in a constructive manner. Toleration is described as the best solution when people find themselves in conflicting. Christians usually propose this as a compromise when they differ and in doing so, bring peace within a conflicting circumstance. Trust is important and patience also includes a minimal level of trust. Embracement requires that action takes place. It is a manner of expression to open yourself unto other and also welcome them. God wants more for his people than for them to live a unhappy life. God enjoy us and wants to enjoy communion with us. It can therefore be seen as one of the reasons why it is important that Christians should embrace each other when they differ does not turn into a dispute. When embracement and toleration is required, in certain situations, where people differ, reconciliation plays an important role. Communication is an integral part in the reconciliation process. Reconciliation is also important because it repair the relationship between God and man. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Christene verskil oor talle sake, onder andere oor leerstellige en etiese sake. Hulle verskil spesifiek oor die wil van God. ‘n Probleem waarmee Christene egter gekonfronteer word, is dat hul eie interpretasie van wat die wil van God in konkrete situasies is, dikwels verskil van dié van ander Christene. Christene verskil nog altyd oor die doop. Die kerke wat die kinderdoop aanvaar en die kerke wat die herdoop aanvaar, verskil oor watter doop die regte doop is. Al verskil mense oor watter vorme van die doop die regte doop is, is dit belangrik om die ryk betekenis wat aan die doop geheg word, te verstaan. Dit is ook belangrik dat ‘n mens ‘n goeie gesindheid moet het, wanneer jy met ander oor die doop verskil. Toleransie en omarming kan ons help om verskille oor die doop op ‘n konstruktiewe wyse te hanteer. Toleransie word beskryf as die beste oplossing wanneer mense in konflik is. Dit is gewoonlik ook die uitweg wat Christene voorstel wanneer hulle verskil, om sodoende die vrede te kan bring tussen mense wanneer hulle in konflik is. Vertroue is belangrik en verdraagsaamheid betrek 'n minimale vlak van vertroue. Omarming vra dat aksie moet plaasvind. Omarming is 'n manier van uitdrukking om jouself vir ander te gee en ook die ander te verwelkom. God wil baie meer vir sy mense hê as om 'n ongelukkige lewe te leef. God geniet ons en wil gemeenskap met ons hê. Dit kan dus as een van die redes gesien word hoekom dit belangrik is dat Christene mekaar moet omarm wanneer hulle verskille het, sodat die verskille nie geskille word nie. Wanneer omarming en verdraagsaamheid vereis word, in situasies waar mense verskil, speel versoening 'n belangrike rol. Kommunikasie is belangrik in die proses van versoening. Versoening is ook belangrik omdat dit die verhouding tussen God en mens herstel.

This issue was closely related to the extent of the problem of civil jurisdiction or even the relationship between the civil power and ecclesiastical power. The philosopher of Wrington, John Locke, actively participated in the discussions of the time. He devoted several writings to the subject, including the Charter on Tolerance (1689). Our research suggests that the Lockean tolerance is outlined above all, by political issues and not exclusively religious, as is advocated by many. The issue of tolerance with regard to defense and the preservation of the natural rights of men, called Locke in his Second Treatise on Government, such as the right to property. For this reason, at first, we stop to speak about the civil state, as this will constitute the reference framework for our considerations about tolerance. Then we try to talk about the excessive entanglement, presented by Locke in his Letter, between the religious sphere and politics, which resulted in the full enjoyment of these rights to some and deprivation or denial of these to others. And lastly, we demonstrate that tolerance is not something to be unrestricted grant, for any person or group acting against equal enjoyment and free of natural rights should be excluded from tolerance. / A liberdade religiosa foi um dos temas mais debatidos no século XVII, na Inglaterra. Essa questão estava intimamente relacionada com o problema da extensão da jurisdição civil ou, ainda, da relação entre o poder civil e o poder eclesiástico. O filósofo de Wrington, John Locke, participou ativamente das discussões da época. Ele dedicou vários escritos ao tema, entre eles a Carta sobre Tolerância (1689). Nossa pesquisa sugere que a tolerância lockeana é delineada, antes de tudo, por questões de natureza política e não exclusivamente religiosa, como é defendida por muitos. A questão da tolerância diz respeito a defesa e a preservação dos direitos naturais dos homens, designado por Locke, em seu Segundo Tratado sobre o Governo, como o direito à propriedade. Por esse motivo, em um primeiro momento, nos detemos em dissertar sobre o Estado civil, visto que este se constituirá como o quadro referencial para nossas considerações acerca da Tolerância. Religious coexistence and sociability in England after the Toleration Act, c.1689-c.1750

The eighteenth century in England has long been associated with increasing consumption, trade, luxury, and intellectual exchange. In contrast with the religiously-fueled tumult of the previous century, it is frequently portrayed as a polite, enlightened and even secularising age. This thesis questions this picture. Taking the ambiguous legacies of the so-called "Toleration Act" of 1689 as its starting point, it explores the impact of the complex and uncertain outcomes of the 1689 Act on social relations between Protestant Dissenters and members of the Established Church in England in the first half of the eighteenth century. In connecting broader legislative change with developing social discourses and the practicalities of everyday life, it demonstrates the extent to which the Toleration Act made religious questions integral to the social and cultural development of the period. As a result, it stresses not only that developing modes and norms of sociability were essential to determining the nature of religious coexistence, but also that the changing religious landscape was absolutely integral to the evolution of multiple different social registers in eighteenth-century England. It therefore demonstrates how previously disparate approaches to eighteenth-century England are mutually illuminating, creating an account of the period that is better able to attend to both religious and cultural change. With this in mind this thesis pays particular attention to the language through which contemporaries described their sociability, suggesting that they have great potential to illuminate the nature of religious coexistence in this period. Starting from the premise that the words an individual chooses are in some way both reflective and constitutive of their ways of thinking, several of the chapters that follow draw on and analyse the language contemporaries employed at the intersections between religion and sociability. The thesis as a whole suggests that doing so can give us insight into how their religious lives were socially organised, how groups were formed, bounded, and transgressed, and how that in itself fed back into the structures of sociability.

Continental Drifters: Holocaust Memory, Decolonization, and Postwar Migration to Europe

This dissertation investigates the relationship between the cultural memory of the Holocaust and postwar migration to Europe from the Global South. I argue that the European postcolonial and migrant literature I read claims the history of the Jewish Question and Holocaust memory as critical resources for Europe's new migrants and diasporic communities. In these late-twentieth-century and contemporary works, the Holocaust represents the failures of assimilation, religious tolerance, and minority rights in Europe. This literature's attentiveness to Holocaust memory, I show, critically disrupts both the strategic forgetting of the Holocaust and the simultaneous repurposing of its memory as instructive of the dangers of failed recognition in postwar Western European democracies. I argue that the works I examine in this dissertation situate Holocaust memory as an aspect of a migrant counter-pedagogy: the residues of past violence reveal the insufficiency of liberal strategies for the management of difference, and signal the danger of current versions of racialist thought. Europe's violence against the Jews thus functions as a paradigm for the limits of diasporic life and the possibilities of cohabitation in contemporary Europe.

In today’s world of globalization the raising of tolerance is helpful in implementing justice and peaceful living in concord among the religions. The present situation of the dialogue between religions in Lithuania is revealed by analyzing the documentation of Church Assemblies, the laws of the Lithuanian Republic, the governmental legal acts, the secondary school curriculums confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science. The work is also reviewing the input of the Lithuanian religious communities into common tolerance, which is performed on the basis of ecumenical movement. The theoretical and practical compatibility obstacles of the confessions’ dialogue are discussed as well as pupils’ attitude towards the issue of inter-religious dialogue and tolerance is investigated. The attention is paid on the necessity of religious and ethic education in the society and the possibilities of the reassessment of values in this situation.
