Les migrations comoriennes en France : institutions, caractéristiques, déterminants et effets économiques / The Comorian migration in France : institutions, characteristic, determinants and economic effects

Abdou, Katibou 29 January 2014 (has links)
Estimates suggest that between 80 000 and 200 000 Comorian citizens living abroad, particularly in metropolitan France ( 95 %). They remit a big portion of their income to their home country. It follows that, the Comoros Islands is one of the most strongly dependent countries on remittances. Between 2000 and 2010, the wealth transferred to the home country by Comorian Diaspora represents on average 20, 50 % of the total GDP of the Comoros. The present research aims to study these migration movements and its economic effects limited to remittances. We begin to explain the Comorian contexts. The study reveals that the economic, political and cultural environments, which characterize this country, are conductive to international migrations. After a brief review of the economic literature on this topic, we show analyze several aspects (characteristics, determinants, etc.) of Comorian migrations in France. It appears that these migration flows are generally prepared in a family context and are primarily motivated by economic reasons. Finally, we show approach the questions about remittances. The analysis shows that these cash flows grow a decade to another and constitute the main source of entrance of currency for the Comoros. On the other hand, empirical regressions seem to indicate that these financial flows are mainly determined by the cultural norms of the Comoros, approximated by the cost of the Anda wedding ceremonies.

ARE REMITTANCES INFLATIONARY? EVIDENCE FROM EMERGING NATIONS IN SOUTH ASIA

Regmi, Sunder 01 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This paper examines the relationship between inflation and remittances as variable of interest and real interest rate & exchange rate as control variables. The main question this paper addresses is whether remittances induce inflationary pressures. This research uses pooled OLS, fixed effect method, random effect method and Arellano Bond GMM estimator for empirical analysis over 2008-2021 data of 7 emerging economies in South Asia. Comparing the methods and interpreting the result, I can say that there are mixed (positive, negative, and no significant) results whether remittances are inflationary.

Remittances and Development in Ecuador

Ljungqvist, Emma January 2011 (has links)
The remittances transferred from Ecuadorian emigrants to Ecuador represent the second largest source of foreign device for the country. It is clear that such large amount of money makes an important impact on the economy. This study aims at evaluating the sustainability of the remittance generated development in the receiving households and also to find evidence if the organizations, authorities and other actors who work in relation to migration, remittances and development are able to increase this level of sustainability by implementing projects. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in order to approach these issues. Questionnaires are carried out with remittance receivers and the results are compared to the results from previous studies in order to identify the usage of remittances. Now, as before it shows that the large majority of the remittances are used in order to cover the household’s daily expenses. The rate of investments and savings is on the other hand low, a situation that creates a fragile development that is heavily dependent on the continued inflows of remittances. This is not a new discovery and several actors including governmental authorities, NGO’s as well as migrant’s associations and international institutions have therefore contributed with development strategies in order to intent increase the sustainability. In order to identify these actors and learn about their objectives and development ideas are semi-structured interviews carried out. One main concern among these actors is to increase the level of investments in productive activities such as micro businesses. Such investments are for example incentivized by providing training for micro entrepreneurs, issuing seed money, promoting local financial structures and facilitating access to micro credits.

Ekonomické aspekty remitencí a migrace: případové studie Ukrajina a Česká republika / Economic Aspects of Remittances and Migration: Case Study of Ukraine and the Czech Republic

Weyskrabová, Blanka January 2012 (has links)
This master thesis is driven by two main objectives. The first one is to provide a general overview of migration in economic theory with a specific focus on remittances and their aspects and impacts. We found that there is no clear consensus about effects of migration and remittances on source and target countries and thus further research is justified. The second aim of the thesis is to analyse migration and remittances between Ukraine and the Czech Republic using primary data from survey questionnaires collected by the Ukrainian Migration Project (UMP). According to our findings, remittances are determined mostly by demographic characteristics and levels of income on both the sending and receiving side, implying their altruistic origin. More importantly, it was not confirmed that remittances are channelled primarily into consumption. On the other hand, remittances do not influence productive spending of households either. These findings contribute to the overall discussion in the area of remittances and may suggest some policy implications.

Banking on Remittances: Migration and Development Desires in the Philippines

Gibson, Melissa 20 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis tracks the politics of migrant remittances in the Philippines through an analysis of established possibilities and entrenched interests in the banking sector. Paying attention to banking sector narratives about the ‘migrant market’, I argue that remittances to the Philippines enter into an established economic space that is constituted by discourse, by history (especially the history of financial sector liberalization), and by ongoing practices of risk management and efforts at financial inclusion. At the same time, I gesture towards sites of “a politics of becoming” (Gibson-Graham 2006, 24), from which emerge potentially path-breaking economic discourse, subjectivity, and collective action in relation to remittance practice.
