____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Therapeutic limitations, development of fungal drug resistances, drug-related toxicity, significant drug interactions and insufficient bioavailability of the conventional antifungal drugs make necessary the development of drugs able to treat the new and emerging fungal infections. The Cerrado is the second greater biome of Brazil and it was identified as one of the most distinguished biomes of South America, becoming an important source of innovative vegetal molecules to treat several conditions, including infectious diseases. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the antifungal potential of Cerrado plants used to treat infections and wounds. Of the 66 extracts tested in the concentration of 20 mg/ml, none showed relevant activity against Candida albicans and 17 were active to Trichophyton rubrum. The dicloromethanic extracts of stem wood and root wood of Kielmeyera coriacea, the hexanic extracts of the leaves of Renealmia alpinia and Stryphnodendron adstringens, and the dicloromethanic extracts of stem wood of Tabebuia caraiba were the most promising, presenting geometric means of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values between 170.39 and 23.23 µg/ml. The present study shows that extracts of Cerrado plants are of particular interesting as source of new agents to the treatment of dermatophytics infections. Therefore, a deeper study, with the isolation of substances and the analysis against other dermatophytes, would allow a better investigation of these fungi susceptibility.
