Nesse sentido, buscamos apresentar quais foram os indícios e sinais apresentados pelo meio impresso que caracterizaram essa busca por uma cidade moderna. A partir das noções de representação difundida pelo historiador francês Roger Chartier, percebemos como uma determinada realidade foi construída, dada a ler. Entraram em pauta as contribuições teóricas do italiano Carlo Ginzburg, que dialoga com o modelo epistemológico chamado de paradigma indiciário. Outros autores que trabalham sobre definições e construções sobre modernização/modernidade também ajudaram a discutir esse processo em Campina Grande. Com base nessas referências, tentamos apresentar e descrever a conquista de equipamentos considerados modernos pela elite e políticos, assim como as reformas urbanas que possibilitaram uma nova paisagem para a cidade. Além de analisarmos as representações sobre a luta pela industrialização como saída para crise que se instalou após o declínio da cultura do algodão na década de 1960. E a mudança de discurso quando o jornal encampou, juntamente com a comunidade estudantil e os políticos, o processo de reconhecimento e consolidação do ensino superior. Portanto, o que se almejou neste trabalho foi construir uma narrativa com base nas edições do Diário da Borborema sobre esse processo de modernização que tanto se almejou no século XX. / This study aims to understand how modernization has occurred in Campina Grande in 1960, 70 and 80 through the representations of the Diário da Borborema based on studies on the history of cities. Accordingly, we present what were the clues and signs presented by the print medium that characterized the quest for a modern city. Starting from the notions of representation expanded by the French historian Roger Chartier, we see how a certain reality is constructed, given to read. Entered on the agenda the theoretical contributions of the italian Carlo Ginzburg, which speaks to the epistemological model called evidential paradigm. Other authors working on definitions and constructions of modernization and modernity also helped to discuss this process in Campina Grande. Based on these references, we try to present and describe the conquest of modern equipment considered by the elite and politicians, as well as the reforms that opened up a new urban landscape for the city. We also analyzed the representations of the struggle for industrialization as a solution to the crisis that has developed after the decline of cotton in the 1960s. And the change of address when the newspaper took over, along with the student community and politicians, the process of recognition and consolidation of higher education. So, what is longed for this work was to construct a narrative based on the issues of the Diário da Borborema on this process of modernization that is both longed for in the twentieth century.
