This dissertation examined how psychological variables associated with selfcontrol
related to abusiveness in situations of intimate conflict. The variables of interest
were efficacy, need for power and responsibility. These variables were examined relative
to other predictors of abuse such as the Abusive Personality (Dutton, 1994b), a construct
of personality features that predispose some men to intensely aversive emotional arousal
in their intimate relationship, leading to abusiveness. The research is relevant to the
experience of those men with the characteristics of Abusive Personality, as well as those
who may not have those predispositional features.
The first step of the project was the development of the Power, Conflict Efficacy
and Responsibility Questionnaire (PCERQ), with its four sub-scales: (1) Conflict
Ineffectiveness (CI; lack of conflict efficacy), (2) N-Power (NP; need for power), (3)
Standards of Non-Abusiveness (SNA; one part of responsibility), and (4) Exonerative
Rationalizations (ER; cognitions complicit with inconsistent self-control - a second part
of responsibility). These sub-scales were developed on the basis of data collected from
samples of undergraduate males in dating relationships (n = 147), men in treatment
groups for wife assault (n = 50), and a community sample of men (n = 27).
Results from regression equations predicting self-reported abuse with the PCERQ
sub-scales, along with other theoretically-relevant measures, found that CI was a
prominent and consistent predictor of both verbal and physical abuse. The interaction of
the NP and ER sub-scales significantly predicted physical abuse, as did the interaction of
the CI sub-scale with the Abusive Personality (the most abusive participants had the
highest scores on both Abusive Personality and Conflict Ineffectiveness). These results
show the importance of considering both situational conflict experiences, along with
personality and life history variables, when examining wife assault.

A survey of attitudes of Canadian graduates in archival studies toward the roles of social science research in their professionMcCarthy, Jane Bowe 05 1900 (has links)
Social science research is a form of inquiry which is useful in expanding the knowledge-base
of a profession, but one which is not normally associated with the archival profession. The
purpose of this study is to examine social science research as it applies to the Canadian archival
profession in general, and to archivists who have graduated from the Master of Archival Studies
(MAS) degree program, at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the
University of British Columbia.
This study examines the attitudes of the first cadre of graduates of a degree program in
archival studies in Canada towards the various roles that social science research plays in the
development of their discipline and practice. A reading of the literature in the archival field
reveals that social science research methods are infrequently employed by the profession in
Canada, although there have been frequent calls for their adoption. Archivists are more familiar
with and employ more often theoretical (deductive) and historical methods than empirical
(inductive) methods.
The study employs the methodology of a survey questionnaire to discover the training and
application of social science research methodology that these graduates have experienced during
their formal education and during their careers. All the respondents had either completed the
MAS program or the course work towards the degree in the period, 1981-1994, and were
working in the field at the time of the study.
The study revealed that respondents support a research dimension for the field, although
their support was inclusive of other types of research more common to the archival studies
(theoretical, historical, scholarly, and archival), and not specifically directed to scientific
research. 33% of respondents expressed an interest in learning about research methods, while
39% said that they were somewhat interested. There was also a correlation between those
respondents who had taken a course in research methods and their knowledge of and support for
this type of research in the archival profession. Likewise, there was also evidence to support that
respondents without the knowledge of research methods were as confident in their ability to
conduct a research project or assist on a research team led by someone else, as were their
colleagues who had taken the course. The qualitative data yields evidence of at least a few
scientific research projects being conducted in the archival workplace, particularly user or
reference surveys and conservation surveys.
The study concludes that there is a role for both pre-appointment and continuing education
programs to foster greater understanding and use of social science methods in all facets of the
profession's research endeavours. Social science research methods are not only applicable to
archival studies, they are beneficial and necessary to the development of the Canadian archival
profession. The thesis recommends that archivists should have, at the very least, an appreciation
of research methods and a discerning eye for what constitutes good research.

The aim of this study was to explore the phenomenon of feeling unsure as viewed from the humanbecoming school of thought. From the humanbecoming perspective feeling unsure is a universal lived experience of health and quality of life. The purposes of this study were to understand the lived experience of feeling unsure from the humanbecoming perspective, to enhance understanding of the lived experience of feeling unsure as an essence of health and quality of life, to discover the structure of the lived experience of feeling unsure, to add to the body of knowledge on the phenomenon of feeling unsure, and to contribute to expand the theory of humanbecoming. The Parse research methodology was used to guide this study and answer the question: Whqt is the structure of the lived experience of feeling unsure? Ten persons living in community accepted to participate in this study. The processes of dialogical engagement, extraction-synthesis, and heuristic interpretation we re used for data gathering and analysis. The central finding of this study is Feeling unsure is wavering irresolutely with discerning ponderings arising in venturing with trepidations, while revering alliances. The findings of this study emerged as new knowledge that extend the theory of humanbecoming and enhance the understanding of the lived experience of feeling unsure.

Organisational and strategic theories have been developed which seek to explain the existence, boundaries, structure, management and competitive advantage of organisations based on knowledge. These theories are consistent with one thread from the overall discourse which argues that the management of knowledge within an organisation is an important activity required for maintaining competitive advantage in a hypercompetitive external environment. Despite the extensive interest in this area, there is sti11limited agreement even about some of its fundamental principles. This plurality of perspectives is due to the diversity of disciplines, theories and objectives with which the area is enriched by both academics and practitioners alike. Many independent KM initiatives have also been proposed for managerial use under the KM umbrella. Such activities include meetings, mentoring schemes, training, job rotation, site visits, conferences and exhibitions, and internal and external collaborations. Many of these initiatives are relatively autonomous and independent concepts. Generally these concepts have been first identified in the practitioner literature and it is unclear where they fit within academic frameworks. In particular, the relationship between KM initiatives and important related academic concepts such as knowledge transfer, organisationalleaming, knowledge creation and innovation is not clear. This lack of agreement, clarity and cohesion in the KM discourse naturally suggests the following research problem: What is the relationship between KM initiatives, organisationalleaming, knowledge transfer, knowledge creation innovation? Taking an organisation and strategic management theory perspective, an exploratory framework for understanding and explaining KM is developed within this thesis. Theoretically, this framework draws together perspectives from the resource-based view of the firm, organisational learning and innovation literatures to propose that the two fundamental KM processes are knowledge transfer and creation. Knowledge transfer supports learning and the utilisation of available internal and external knowledge resources within an organisation. Through knowledge transfer and learning, new knowledge can be created and organisational innovation takes place. These two processes are then integrated into Whittington, Pettigrew et al.'s (1999) framework for organisational change. Various disparate KM initiatives are also positioned within the developed framework based on whether they facilitate knowledge transfer by altering organisational boundaries, processes or structures. The essence of the developed framework is represented pictorially by a research model. This research model depicts the framework's key concepts and the relationships between them. It also begins to represent some of the complex dimensionality inherent in the framework. The research model is explored empirically using data from the Business Longitudinal Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Responses from 3014 Australian businesses surveyed yearly from 1994 to 1998 are analysed using chi-squared and logistical regression statistical techniques. This sample consists of 1344 small and 1670 medium businesses across eleven industries. In empirically exploring the research model, some of the dimensionality of the framework is explored. However, the process also provides a confirmatory function by providing empirical support for many of the aspects of the framework. Statistical support was found for all elements of the research model. Odds ratios for the various KM initiatives examined ranged from 1.292 to 3.554. These results confirm the value of these initiatives for facilitating the transfer of knowledge. They also suggest that the dimensionality of these constructs represented in the model should be explored further. Of all the KM initiatives, research and development emerged as the most effective initiative for facilitating knowledge transfer and creation. This finding suggests that research and development should be the very first initiative considered by managers looking to implement a KM program. It also suggests that future research on knowledge transfer and creation should pay particular attention to this particular initiative. The logistical regression analysis demonstrated that changing organisational boundaries, processes and structures all contribute to facilitating knowledge transfer which lead to knowledge creation. These results provided support for the most important contribution of the thesis. This contribution was the development of an integrated and exploratory conceptual framework which can serve as a foundation stone for the field of KM.

M.Com. (Marketing Management) / The marketing research industry is a highly competitive environment with over one hundred marketing research firms competing for business in the South African market. Literature suggests that one of the biggest challenges the industry faces is poor positioning. Marketing research firms are seen as data suppliers rather than business or strategic thought partners. This is mainly the result of marketing research firms traditionally providing masses of data with no or limited insights, practical use and strategic value (also known as actionability of research results). This state of affairs in the industry needs to be addressed, otherwise marketing research firms will become less profitable and effective data / research information suppliers. To warrant future business and increased revenues, marketing research firms need to position themselves as professionals who can deliver actionable research results that assist clients strategically. Literature suggests various methods in which marketing research firms can achieve this; amongst which data visualisation and storytelling are identified as two such methods to deliver actionable research results which impact clients’ business. Therefore, the primary research objective of this study was to uncover the strategic use of data visualisation and storytelling by marketing research firms in quantitative research reports. To address this objective, this study was conducted in two phases, first literature on the topic was presented, followed by an empirical study. The empirical study independently followed an exploratory and descriptive research design where two samples were used. The main study (qualitative phase) sampled individuals, working for South African marketing research firms, who oversee teams who create quantitative research reports by means of indepth interviews; and the small-scale complementary study (quantitative phase) sampled clients of marketing research firms who receive these quantitative reports by means of an computer-administered, Internet-based survey. The studies were conducted sequentially; the small-scale complementary study followed after the main study had been completed. The Morse and Field approach was used to analyse the empirical research results of the main study which indicated that marketing research firms do not claim to have a traditional approach to quantitative reporting; the focus is not on data supply, but rather on providing actionable research results to clients which adds value to their business decision-making. The results also indicate that marketing research firms use storytelling to deliver actionable research so as to increase the strategic value thereof, while data visualisation is not used strategically. The results of the small-scale complementary study indicated that although 62% of clients feel that current quantitative research reports (received from marketing research firms) can be used to make strategic decisions, clients also feel that quantitative research reports need improvement regarding the delivery of strategic and actionable research reports. The exploration of the current quantitative reporting landscape and the evaluation of whether South African marketing research firms strategically use data visualisation and storytelling, have helped in identifying barriers to adoption of these methods and recommended how these could be overcome; it also identified specific measures to bridge the gap between data supply and strategic (actionable) research. The study found that marketing research firms should continue and strengthen their focus on actionable research as client demand therefor will continue; this can be achieved through a number of ways such as by focusing on understanding the client’s business, demonstrating thought leadership, being future focused, strengthening storytelling capabilities and developing / possibly investing in data visualisation capabilities.

Sports fans often scrutinise the team selection strategies employed by their favourite team's coach or selection panel. Many of these fans believe that they can perform the selection process far better than those tasked with the responsibility. Fantasy leagues, provide a platform for fans to test their hand at this selection procedure. Twenty20 cricket is a new and exciting form of cricket and has become very popular in recent years. This research focuses on bringing these concepts together by proposing a binary integer program to determine a team selection strategy for fantasy league cricket. This is done in a Twenty20 setting. The approach used in this study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of previously developed performance measures in a fantasy league setting. Adjustments to these measures are made and new measures are proposed. These measures are then used to select a fantasy league team using a prospective approach. This is done to provide fantasy league participants with a mathematical procedure for fantasy league team selection.
