The Application of Mass Balance and Hydrodynamic/Pollutant Transport Models for Wetland Restoration

<p> This study deals with the use of mass balance and hydrodynamic/pollutant transport models for wetland restoration. The models were applied to Cootes Paradise marsh, located at the western end of Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario. Regulated water levels, excess nutrients and high suspended solids have contributed to declining vegetation and a subsequent change in wildlife in this wetland ecosystem. The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG), which manages Cootes Paradise, has developed goals for the restoration of this wetland which focus primarily on improving water quality. </p> <p> A mass balance approach was applied to Cootes Paradise in order to gather more information on the inputs of phosphorus and suspended solids to the ecosystem. Although data were not complete for many aspects of the model, the mass balance calculations provided an acceptable agreement with field values. The mass balance models also revealed that more than 50% of the inputs of phosphorus and suspended solids were being contributed by the internal sediments. </p> <p> A two-dimensional depth averaged hydrodynamic/pollutant transport model provided an explanation for the movement of substances through the marsh as a result of wind and inflow generated currents. The resulting pollutant distribution patterns could be explained by environmental conditions in the marsh ecosystem. The computer model predicted phosphorus concentrations reasonably well, both for an overall average of the entire marsh and for individual sites. The model also simulated suspended solids and accounted for contributions of particulate matter due to carp and due to wind resuspension of the bottom sediments. Both overall averages and sample site comparisons for suspended solids were within one standard deviation of field values. According to data generated by the computer model for suspended solids, carp and wind are contributing to the concentrations in Cootes Paradise on an almost equal level; both contribute approximately one third to the overall concentration for suspended solids based on the available data. Further information is needed, however, to improve on the data set for Cootes Paradise in order to better validate the results produced by the mass balance and computer models. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Predictions Concerning Internal Phosphorus Release in Cootes Paradise Marsh and Implications for Restoration

To assess the relative contribution of phosphorus release from sediment in Cootes Paradise Marsh, I first examined spatial and temporal variability of laboratory-measured release rates from sediment samples collected from 12 sites within the wetland (Chapter 1 ). The microbial communities from these 12 sites were characterized on the basis of sole-carbon-source utilization using BIOLOG GN plates containing 95 substrates. Results from these experiments were entered into a principal component analysis and the release rates for all sites were regressed against corresponding PC 1 and PC2 scores (Chapter 2). Differences in microbial physiology as defined by PC 1 and PC2 scores accounted for 49% and 53%, respectively of the variation in phosphorus release rates. Using stepwise multiple regression, I concluded that the key determinants of laboratory-derived release rates from West Pond sediment (a highly eutrophic site within Cootes Paradise Marsh) are oxic state, ambient temperature and time of sediment collection (Chapter 3). Using this information I developed a multivariate model to predict release rates. This model, along with 2 alternative approaches, was used to estimate the extent of internal loading (kg d-1) in Cootes Paradise Marsh (Chapter 4). Method 1 was a highly controlled, static approach and resulted in an internal load of 11 .6 kg d-1, which was attributed to diffusion. The remaining two methods were more dynamic in nature as they took into account temporal variation, ambient temperature and the development of anoxia. Using Method 2, I estimated an internal load of 7.8 to 8.5 kgd-1, which was based on empirically-derived laboratory release rates. Method 3 consisted of the predictive model from which I estimated an internal load of 6.7 kgd-1• I attributed the release from the latter two methods to microbial mineralization processes. Based on this work and a previous estimate of internal loading in Cootes Paradise Marsh (Prescott & Tsanis 1997), I concluded that mineralization accounts for 22.3% of total phosphorus loading to the system, preceded only by urban runoff ( 41% ). / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

Periphyton are an important group of primary producers in stream ecosystems and are commonly used as indicators of water quality and ecosystem status. Periphyton biomass accumulation in streams is influenced by a number of factors, including nutrient supply, shading by riparian vegetation, substrate properties, and hydrological conditions. Urban land use potentially influences all of these factors in ways that may promote or constrain periphyton growth. Such influences may be further altered by efforts to restore urban streams within parks and residential settings. To test this, I compared patterns of stream periphyton biomass among rural (forested), urban, and restored urban streams within and around Umeå. I found that periphyton biomass varied up to 50-fold among sites but did not differ significantly among stream classes (i.e., rural vs. urban vs. urban restored). Periphyton biomass did tend to increase among sites with greater nutrient concentrations and warmer temperature. Yet, these patterns were influenced by substrate conditions within and among streams, with significantly greater biomass observed on larger cobbles when compared to sand. Results indicate that sedimentation in the studied urban streams (and likely in streams in general) may restrict algal growth, even if other conditions are otherwise favourable. Conversely, urban restoration involving the placement of course substrate on the stream bottom may enhance algal growth locally, particularly where light and nutrients are both elevated. My findings illustrate that periphyton biomass depends on a multi-scale framework of factors that should be considered when managing streams, especially in urban areas where streams are often influenced by both local and catchment-scale stressors.

Carbon Pools and Fluxes as an Indicator of Riparian Restoration

Riparian forests are integral components of the landscape. The inherent biogeochemical processes that occur in such forests provide numerous benefits to wildlife and society. Maintaining good water quality is a major benefit from riparian forests and therefore, the maintenance, creation, or restoration of riparian forests is indispensable. This study was designed to broaden current knowledge of the complex, interrelated biogeochemical processes and determine indices for riparian forest restoration based on the various carbon pools/fluxes that may represent restoration success. This study was implemented on the Savannah River Site, an Environmental Research Park, where several riparian forests are recovering from thermal disturbances. The streams in these forests were subjected to thermal discharges that increased flows and resulted in removal of soil and a decline in the amount of woody vegetation. Two of these riparian forests are at different ages post-disturbance and represent different stages of recovery, which provides an exceptional opportunity to study successional processes in riparian forests and enhance restoration efforts. Linear transects perpendicular to the main stream channels were established in 2 recovering riparian forests of different ages (two areas in Pen Branch ~ 8 years post-disturbance; Fourmile Branch ~ 12 years post disturbance) and an undisturbed (thermally) more mature riparian forest (Meyer's Branch ~ 60 years). Along these transects quantitative data were obtained on above and belowground carbon pools and fluxes. Carbon pools exhibited a close correlation with riparian forest development. Biomass and carbon pools increased with increasing riparian forest stand age. The importance of the herbaceous carbon pool declined relative to the total above ground biomass, and the root carbon pool increased with forest age/succession. In general, net primary production (NPP) in young riparian forests (~8-10 years) rapidly approached and even exceeded NPP of more mature riparian forests. Once the herbaceous stage of succession was surpassed, the litterfall component of NPP plays a greater role riparian forests. As a woody overstory became established (after ~ 8-10 years), annual litterfall rates as a function of NPP were independent of forest age. Establishment of woody species occurred ~8 to 10 years after thermal disturbance and litterfall amount in young riparian forests rapidly became comparable to mature riparian forests. Lateral litter movement from the riparian forest toward the stream was less than the amount of litter (carbon pool) deposited from upstream into the riparian forest during a flood event. Overall lateral litter movement supplied less energy to the stream system than vertical inputs. A decline in riparian forest floor biomass was observed with increasing riparian forest development. However, a difference in foliar forest floor percent carbon lended itself to a minimal increase in the forest floor carbon pool with increasing riparian forest age. Woody debris in riparian forests comprised a relatively small carbon pool compared to tree and soil carbon pools. The species composition of litter appeared to be more of an overriding factor influencing decomposition rates than forest age. The influence of litter quality was evident in the decomposition rates of the different litter composites used in this study. In all 4 sites the litter composite from the mature riparian forest decomposed significantly more than the litter composites from the younger riparian forests. The fairly rapid decomposition of red maple (Acer rubrum L.), which was one of the main components in the mature riparian forest litter composite, influenced the greater decomposition rate. The litter composites from the younger riparian forests were similar and both included more decomposition resistant litter types, specifically waxmyrtle (Myrica cerifera L.) and alder (Alnus serrulata (Ait.) Willd.). Decomposition rates did not differ between the individual successional stages. Riparian forests are intimately associated with their hydroperiod. During flood events the riparian forest receives inputs of organic matter and sediment, and the amount of deposition may decrease along a distance gradient from the main stream channel. The differential amount of inputs could affect forest productivity. However, in these riparian forests, a distance gradient effect was not observed. Trends in herbaceous biomass were evident along a microtopographic moisture gradient. The ridge and swale microtopography prevalent in the younger riparian forests counteracted a distance from the stream channel gradient effect across the riparian forest. This study provided knowledge of how carbon pools and fluxes change with riparian forest recovery from disturbance as well as through different seral stages. Implementing the findings of this study will enhance restoration evaluation efforts to ensure that these areas continue to provide the numerous benefits gleamed from them. / Ph. D.

Robust Electric Power Infrastructures. Response and Recovery during Catastrophic Failures

This dissertation is a systematic study of artificial neural networks (ANN) applications in power system restoration (PSR). PSR is based on available generation and load to be restored analysis. A literature review showed that the conventional PSR methods, i.e. the pre-established guidelines, the expert systems method, the mathematical programming method and the petri-net method have limitations such as the necessary time to obtain the PSR plan. ANN may help to solve this problem presenting a reliable PSR plan in a smaller time. Based on actual and past experiences, a PSR engine based on ANN was proposed and developed. Data from the Iowa 162 bus power system was used in the implementation of the technique. Reactive and real power balance, fault location, phase angles across breakers and intentional islanding were taken into account in the implementation of the technique. Constraints in PSR as thermal limits of transmission lines (TL), stability issues, number of TL used in the restoration plan and lockout breakers were used to create feasible PSR plans. To compare the time necessary to achieve the PSR plan with another technique a PSR method based on a breadth-search algorithm was implemented. This algorithm was also used to create training and validation patterns for the ANN used in the scheme. An algorithm to determine the switching sequence of the breakers was also implemented. In order to determine the switching sequence of the breakers the algorithm takes into account the most priority loads and the final system configuration generated by the ANN. The PSR technique implemented is composed by several pairs of ANN, each one assigned to an individual island of the system. The restoration of the system is done in parallel in each island. After each island is restored the tie lines are closed. The results encountered shows that ANN based schemes can be used in PSR helping the operators restore the system under the stressful conditions following a blackout. / Ph. D.

Split-flow Stormwater Management Strategy Design Feasibility and Cost Comparison

This dissertation develops a new distributed split-flow stormwater management strategy and compares its site design feasibility and construction cost to existing stormwater management methods. The purpose of the split-flow strategy is to manage stormwater by preserving predevelopment flows in terms of rate, quality, frequency, duration and volume. This strategy emulates the predevelopment hydrology: it retains and infiltrates additional runoff volume created by development by using bioretention and paired weirs as proportional flow splitters connected to small infiltration facilities distributed throughout a site. Results show that 1) the distributed split-flow stormwater management strategy can provide a higher level of environmental protection at comparable construction cost to existing detention-based methods, 2) split-flow systems are less expensive to construct than current truncated hydrograph-based bioretention and infiltration systems and 3) non-point source water pollution-reduction objectives, currently achieved with either detention with first flush or comparable bioretention and infiltration systems, could be achieved in a more cost-effective manner using distributed split-flow stormwater management strategy. / Ph. A Perceptual Study of Wetlands: Implications for Wetland Restoration in the Urban Area in Malaysia

The restoration of natural wetlands is a wonderful, noble and pragmatic idea, but such efforts often meet resistance from certain segments of society. One reason for this is that the public perceives the environment in different ways than do the experts, such as landscape architects and land managers. This dissertation analyzes people's preferences for wetlands in comparison to those of landscape architects. It specifically studies the conflict about the wetland restoration program in the Malaysia's Kelana Jaya Municipal Park. This dissertation is based on data obtained from a preference survey using photo questionnaires that polled both the public's and landscape architects' group preferences for wetlands. The data was analyzed using the Content Identifying Method (CIM) to determine group preferences for wetlands and factors that influence these preferences. Park managers from several local authorities also were interviewed to determine their expectations of public preferences and attitudes toward wetland restoration and public participation. The public and landscape architects have significantly differed in stated preferences for wetlands. The public strongly prefers park-like landscapes that demonstrate human influences and provide the potential for human involvement; in contrast, landscape architects prefer natural wetlands that are visually pleasing, with well-defined spaces, visual coherence, and visual complexity. In addition, park managers did not accurately predict the public's view of wetlands. Their prediction was similar to landscape architects' preferences. Attitudes toward wetland activities and safety, knowledge about wetland benefits, the motivation to use urban natural open spaces, and familiarity with nature significantly affected the public's preferences. Further, the motivation to use urban natural open spaces was the best predictor of public's preferences. The primary implications of this dissertation are that environmental education should be a core activity in changing people's perceptions of natural wetlands and that opinions of local people should be incorporated in many aspect of wetlands restoration, planning, design, and policymaking, especially in Malaysia. / Ph. Historic preservation: a study in local public administration

Do citizen volunteers, sitting on legislatively created local historic architectural review boards, represent a part of the American governance tradition? This study examines the relationships between public board members, citizen interests, career public administrators and the elected appointing authorities. This research involved a national survey of over 1200 members of boards of historic architectural review. In addition, four town or county case studies are presented in detail. These case studies are Jonesborough, Tennessee; Lynchburg, Virginia; Cobb County, Georgia; and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. These case studies are examined through an ecological perspective. Within the context of this study, boards of historic architectural review are very much a part of the urban/town/county governance model. They are highly professional in their composition, highly egalitarian, and deeply committed to furthering highly individualistic notions of community. Although some national community studies suggest a malaise in communitarian ideals, this research suggests just the contrary. The failure of citizenship falls more upon the legitimacy accorded to citizens as public administrators rather than an apathy toward manifesting that citizenship. Historic preservation itself is in a national state of disarray. Its ethos is poorly defined, and the national wellspring for preservation impetus to the local community is strained. Most communities find themselves struggling to fit a nostalgic, sentimental vision of the preserved environment into a well articulated economic model. This research suggests that local historic architectural review boards need to draw upon themselves to create better opportunities through self-study and formal certification programs. By enhancing their natural reserves of professionalism and commitment, they will advertise what they already do very well: administer in the public interest. By joining with like-minded community-based public boards this new coalition promises a energy and direction for municipal governments. The key is to foster an open environment of dialogue and debate centered on furthering good, responsive government. / Ph. D.

Evaluating the Long-Term Morphological Response of a Headwater Stream to Three Restoration Techniques

The stream restoration industry has been growing since the addition and modification of Section 404 to the Clean Water Act. Many projects follow the guidelines of Natural Channel Design and use in-stream structures to stabilize stream channels. Post-project monitoring rarely exceeds 3-5 years, and the lack of guidance, funding, and pre-restoration data prevents meaningful post-project assessment of the design techniques. The Virginia Tech Stream Research, Education, and Management (StREAM) Lab is a research facility where a stream restoration project was completed along 1.3 km of Stroubles Creek in 2010. The study site provides a unique opportunity to compare the use of three restoration treatments with different intensities of restoration actions. Following exclusion of cattle from all three sites, the first treatment reach was left to naturally revegetate (Treatment 1) and along Treatment 2 the streambanks were re-graded to a 3:1 slope and replanted. An additional inset floodplain was constructed within the active channel of Treatment 3. Pre-restoration data, including topographic surveys and erosion pin measurements, provided a baseline for quantification of morphological response 11 years post-restoration. This project utilized as-built survey data from 2010 and a follow-up survey in 2021. The spatial data were analyzed to quantify important stream metrics: cross-sectional area, width, maximum depth, hydraulic depth, and width-to-depth ratio. Overall, the percent change per year of each metric decreased substantially following the restoration, indicating an increase in stability. While Treatment 3 continues to show minor erosion on average (+3.3% in area, +3.2% in width, and +11.2% in maximum depth), Treatments 1 (excluding cross section 5) and 2 decreased on average in area (-3.4% and -18.6%) and hydraulic depth (-13.3% and -10.8%). Treatment 1 eroded by an average of 11.7% in width compared to a decrease of -13.4% in Treatment 2 and an increase in 3.2% in Treatment 3. Comparisons of each treatment to Virginia Mitigation Banking Standards indicated Treatment 1 met the fewest number of criteria, followed by Treatment 2 and then Treatment 3, indicating that hard structures are not necessary to meet mitigation bank standards, even in urban watersheds. In an urban, incised channel with cattle impacts, re-grading the streambanks, actively planting woody riparian vegetation, and incorporating an inset floodplain will accelerate the establishment of channel stability, as compared to the more passive approach of simply removing cattle access to the channel. / Master of Science / The stream restoration industry has been growing since the addition and modification of Section 404 to the Clean Water Act. A stream restoration project was completed on Stroubles Creek at the StREAM Lab property in 2010. This project provides a unique opportunity to compare three different intensities of restoration actions. Following exclusion of cattle from all three sites, plants were left to naturally regrow in the first treatment reach and Treatment 2 re-shaped the banks to a gentler slope and replanted. Like Treatment 2, an additional inset floodplain was constructed within the active channel of Treatment 3. Pre-restoration data, including topographic surveys and bank erosion measurements provided a baseline for quantification of physical response 11 years post-restoration. This project utilized survey data from immediately post-restoration in 2010, and a follow-up survey in 2021.
