A survey of the development of pitch perception theories, their application to bell sounds and an investigation of perceived differences between ringing and chiming bells

Botha, Alison January 1998 (has links)
A brief overview of the workings of the human auditory system is followed by a review of literature concerning both the theories and experimental investigations of human pitch perception. The application of these theories to the inharmonic complex tones produced by bells is discussed, and further experiments using bell sounds are reviewed. A methodology for psychoacoustic experiments with specific reference to those investigating pitch perception of inharmonic complex tones is presented. This methodology is then implemented in an experimental investigation of pitch perception of ringing and chiming bell sounds. A pitch matching experiment using ringing and chiming sounds from four bells aimed to determine perceived pitch differences between ringing and chiming bells. This experiment was inconclusive because insufficient data was collected. Known experimental results, such as the inability of non-musicians to match the pitches of sounds with different timbres were confirmed. Spectral analyses of the stimuli were performed. The presentation of stimuli at a low level of sensation is questioned, as this might have prevented pseudo high frequency noise resulting from stronger upper partials in the ringing sound from being audible, and hence the pitch differences between ringing and chiming bells would not be observed.

Migrace kalouse ušatého (Asio otus) v podmínkách střední Evropy / Long-eared owl (Asio otus) migration within Central Europe

Fraitágová, Iveta January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the present thesis is to give a review of the ringing recoveries of the Long - eared owl (Asio otus) in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. The bird ringing data used in this thesis come from the archive of the National Museum in Prague. The parts of the thesis are as follows:1) history of the ringing in the Czech Republic; 2) bird adaptation on the flight and migration; 3) control of the migration; 4) the data of the Long- eared owls ringed as the young birds in the nest (pulli); 5) the data of the Long - eared owls ringed as adults (ad), that were caught and checked during their wintering in the Czech Republic; 6) the recoveries of the Long- eared owls ringed by various European Bird Ringing Centres and found in the Czech Republic; 7) cause of the mortality of the Long eared owl;8) census of the Long - eared owl recoveries in the Czech Republic from 1934 till 2011 (appendix). Key words: Migration, the Long-eared Owl, Ringing, Ringing Recoveries, Mortality

Inteligentní vyzvánění pro Symbian S60 / Intelligent Ringtones in Symbian S60

Kadlas, Jakub January 2010 (has links)
Symbian OS is one of the most popular operating system for smartphones. The most favorite version of Symbian OS is the S60 platform, which is the aim of this thesis. Part of this thesis is focused on theoretical overview of Symbian OS, and a description of integraded sensors in smartphones. The second part is devoted to the implementation of sample application for inteligent ringtones. This application allows smartphone to customize phone ringing according to information obtained from sensors. Application was implemented in C++ language with Symbian-specific modifications. The development environment used was Carbide.c++ with SDK S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1.

Single-image full-focus reconstruction using depth-based deconvolution

Salahieh, Basel, Rodriguez, Jeffrey J., Stetson, Sean, Liang, Rongguang 30 September 2016 (has links)
In contrast with traditional extended depth-of-field approaches, we propose a depth-based deconvolution technique that realizes the depth-variant nature of the point spread function of an ordinary fixed-focus camera. The developed technique brings a single blurred image to focus at different depth planes which can be stitched together based on a depth map to output a full-focus image. Strategies to suppress the deconvolution's ringing artifacts are implemented on three levels: block tiling to eliminate boundary artifacts, reference maps to reduce ringing initiated by sharp edges, and depth-based masking to mitigate artifacts raised by neighboring depth-transition surfaces. The performance is validated numerically for planar and multidepth objects. (C) 2016 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Ljud i landskapet : Akustikarkeologi och öländska klangstenar

Hultman, Maja January 2007 (has links)

The aim of this work is to give an example of how archaeoacoustics can broaden our understanding of archaeological remains and to further contribute to the almost non-existing research of ringing stones. With a theoretical discussion about sound from three different perspectives and by means of using different kinds of analysis, this essay will show that there are unknown relations between the three known ölandic ringing stones and the cultural landscape of Öland. Possible patterns in the placement of the stones and the possibility of the sound in this soundscape will be investigated. The essay will also suggest a resonant stone typology and discuss the necessity of one. Finally, the intention is also to shed new light upon the discussion on what the uses of the ringing stones might have been.

Étude des artefacts de flou, ringing et aliasing en imagerie numérique : application à la restauration

Blanchet, Gwendoline 17 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)

A Study Of Passerine Migration At Metu(ankara, Central Turkey) Based On The Mist-netting Method

Kesapli Can, Ozge 01 March 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Turkey is on the main migratory route for many bird species although especially passerine migration is little known. The objective of this study is to document and analyze the diversity, abundances, daily and seasonal phenologies of migrating passerines at METU as well as compare seasonal phenologies with those obtained at Manyas KuScenneti(Balikesir) and Cernek(Samsun) stations. The study covers autumn 2001, spring and autumn 2002 migration seasons. Methodology is based on the capture and ringing of passerines. In the first two seasons, intermittent sampling was the rule, but in autumn 2002 the study was continuous throughout the day and the season. Totally 1,832 individuals of 60 passerine species were ringed. Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) and Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) were the two most common species. Blackcap dominates species composition in autumn seasons with a very high percentage (%33). Daily captures peaked in the early morning and with a smaller peak one hour before the sunset. Several waves of migrants were detected in autumn 2002, with most peaks in close correlation with those recorded at Cernek station, indicating some connection between migrant populations using both sites for stopover. Fat depositon rates showed at least Yalincak is a high quality stopover site for most migrant species since many species gained weight up to around 50% within a period of 10 days. This is the first study documenting passerine migration in Turkey, and it revealed that small wooded landscapes within less hospitable habitats provide crucial stopover habitat for many migrant passerines.
