An assessment of the impact of riverboat gaming development on the historic community of Rising Sun, Indiana : a case study

Kennedy, Steven D. January 2001 (has links)
The proliferation of gaming in America has increasingly brought certain development pressures to bear on historic resources and has been an emerging issue in the field of historic preservation for the last decade. Early experiments to harness gaming as a catalyst for preservation activity in four historic mining communities in South Dakota and Colorado received much attention. More recently, riverboat casinos have affected historic communities throughout the Midwest. From the standpoint of preservation, these examples have had both positive and negative effects for historic resources. This study examines some of the lessons learned and uses them to illuminate the case of Rising Sun, a small rural community in southeastern Indiana with a casino riverboat. The goal is to determine whether gaming development, if properly planned, situated, and regulated, can be a positive force for preservation activity while still maintaining the original character of the host community. / Department of Architecture

Mass Transfer from a Series of Rising Bubbles

Derbyshire, Francis John 05 1900 (has links)

The rate of mass transfer from a series of bubbles, formed at constant frequency, rising through a quiescent liquid, was investigated at various times after bubble formation. The effect of surfactant on mass transfer was also studied.

A decay from partially circulating to non-circulating conditions was found to occur in 7-8 seconds. The initial rate of mass ·transfer was appreciably reduced by the presence of surfactant. Mass transfer due to end effects was found to be 25-40% of the initial bubble mass.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Povstání Jakobitů na počátku 18. století a jeho odraz v literatuře / Jacobite Risings and its Reflection in Literature

KUBNÁ, Marie January 2018 (has links)
The Diploma thesis, Jacobite Risings and its Reflection in Literature, deals with historical and literary analysis with the aid of historical texts, which describe events and mood of people in the course of Jacobite risings in Scotland. The aim of this thesis is to compare historical novels from fourth of the chosen authors and to find out if history is only background or the main theme of the story. The chosen representatives of historical novels are Sir Walter Scott, Nigel Tranter, Neil Munro and Anya Seton. The first part of the thesis introduces the theory and characterization of the genre of historical novel and describes historical events at the beginning of the 18th century. The next part focuses on analysis of the chosen historical novels. The objective of the analysis is to point out the differences of the texts and the connection of the story with historical facts.

Volunteer Women: Militarized Femininity in the 1916 Easter Rising

Conaway, Sasha 20 May 2019 (has links)
Women were an integral part to the Easter Rising, yet until recently, their contributions have been forgotten. Those who have been remembered are often women who bucked conservative Irish society’s notions of femininity and chose to actively participate in combat, which has led to a skewed narrative that favors their contributions over the contributions of other women. Historians and scholars favor these narratives because they are empowering and act as clear foils to the heroic narratives of the male leaders in the Easter Rising. In reality, however, most of the women who joined Cumann na mBan or worked for the leaders of the Easter Rising chose to do so knowing they would take on a supportive role. They did so willingly, and even put the cause of Irish independence above the need for women’s rights. Their duties reflected this reality. Once the Easter Rising was underway, women were needed to support the rebels and did so often under fire from British and Irish fighters. For their participation in the rebellion, some women were arrested, while as a whole, the contributions of these women were derided and downplayed by the larger public. Those women not imprisoned would go on to establish the martyr-myth of the heroic and male Irish revolutionaries executed for their part in the Easter Rising. This led to the women’s histories being forgotten or ignored in favor of the heroic narrative. Even when pensions were made available to compensate participants of the Easter Rising, women only applied out of need and for fear of poverty, rather than to receive recognition. To this day, Ireland and Irish history scholars have ignored the participation of gender-conforming women in favor of the more heroic narrative of women whose experiences more closely resemble those of the Easter Rising’s male martyrs.
