The first movement of Robert Schumann¡¦s A minor piano concerto is originally the Fantasy in A minor for piano and orchestra which composed in 1841. Four years later, Schumann himself added another two movements to let it become a concerto of three complete movements. The idea of monothematic is through out all movements to unite the concerto. This text is divided into four parts to research. The first part is the discussion of composing background. The second part is the realization of the compositional process. The third part is concentrated on the analysis, the formal structure of the three movements, includes the monothematic using and the strategy of thematic metamorphosis using. And the last part investigates the sound, harmony, melody and rhythm of this concerto, in order to understand the special composing method of Schumann. Robert Schumann e o Dichterliebe - aproximação e distanciamento na unidade poético-musical / -

Tomimura, Fernando 24 October 2011 (has links)
This is a study on Robert Schumann\'s song cycle Dichterliebe opus 48. It points to a series of compositional procedures which emphasize a close link between Schumann\'s poetical and musical lexicon, his relation with the aesthetics of fragment and the extraordinary complexity of his writing in composing the cycle. In this regard, through an analysis of each song, this work addresses Schumann\'s idiomatic features to provide a deeper understanding of his compositional process in Dichterliebe. The analytical study aims at supporting interpretative issues. Special attention is devoted to some aspects of hermeneutics in analysis -- such as musical memory interaction, construction of psychological states suggested by the text and amplified by the music, interference and transmutation of musical and literary codes. This is done in the pursuit of a coherent approach which will serve as a pattern for interpretation, being helpful for both performance and active listening, although such interpretation might be the subject of discussions and new interpretations.

Symbolism in the Davidsbündler dances of Robert Schumann (lecture-recital), together with three recitals of selected works by Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, J.S. Bach, Rachmaninoff, Bloch, Scarlatti, Ben Weber, Beethoven, Prokofieff and Liszt

Padgett, Olive D. 12 1900 (has links)
The first three recitals contained solely performances of piano music. The first of these consisted of a Fantasy and a set of variations by Mozart, the Fantaisie in F minor by Chopin, and the Sonata in C minor by Schubert. The second recital contained an English Suite by J. S. Bach, two Etudes-Tableaux and two Preludes by Rachmaninoff, and the Piano Sonata of Ernest Bloch. The third recital consisted of four Sonatas by Scarlatti, a Fantasia (Variations) by the American composer, Ben Weber, a Sonata by Beethoven, Chose en soi and Pensée by Prokofieff, and a Polonaise by Liszt. The fourth recital was a lecture on symbolism in the Davidsbündler Dances of Schumann, examining various types of symbolism appearing in the Dances: use of quotations from his own and others' works, use of a motive based on the letters of a name, use of "stage directions," use of tonality as a symbol, use of word painting, and use of sound effects. The lecture was followed by a performance of this work.
